I came across this photo of a training manual. I hope that this finally gives us the answer to my original question.

Ramonford I appreciate you taking the trouble to try and find the answer to my question but as you have found even the manufacturers/dealers do not seem to know the answer. I know that this question has been raised before so I find it strange that there has not been a definitive answer published by VAG. Anyway, someone my read this forum who may have some influence with VAG and we may eventually get an answer.

Thanks for the replies. You can see the problem in that there are two different opinions; although it does seem to err on the side of no maintenance. Can anyone provide any evidence from VAG which confirms this view. The dealers that I have spoken to do not all agree either and I do not want to end up with a warranty claim which may not be honoured due to lack of maintenance. Thanks again

Could anyone please give me a definitive answer as to whether the 7 speed dry clutch dsg gearbox needs maintenance, and if so what is required and when. Thanks in anticipation.

Well it's been 5 days since I had it to the dealers and so far it's started normally. If the problem reoccurs I'll let you know.

I picked my car up this afternoon from the dealers, Hayselden Doncaster, and they have told me that there is a VW/Skoda bulletin detailing this problem. They have carried out a reprogram of the ECU. I will see how it starts from now and let you know.

After 4 days of starting normally the problem returned this morning. The garage is keeping it overnight and checking the starting in the morning. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the information. Mine is not quite as bad as the one in the video but has the same symptoms. This proves how useful this type of site is. If anyone knows the current version number of the ECU software please post a reply. Thanks in anticipation.

Well I tried it this morning, after the battery replacement, and there is no difference. So the next step is for the garage to have the vehicle overnight and start it with it hooked up to the computer. Will let you know the results.

Well I've had the diagnostic done and , you've guessed it, nothing showing on the computer; howevr, the mechanic decided to check the battery in case there was not enough voltage at startup. He carried out a discharge test and found that the battery is duff. This has been replaced under warranty but I will not know whether it has cured the starting problem until tomorrow morning. Will let you know the result. If Ahab sees this could you please let me know what your fuel consumption is, either by computer or checking between fillups. Thanks

Have booked it in on Saturday morning for a diagnostic. Will let you all know the result.

I took delivery of an Octavia 1.4 tsi with DSG gearbox on the 15th March 2010. Because I have been on holiday I have only done about 80 miles; however, apart from the first two days, when the car started O K, it has been reluctant to start. It's as if the engine is only running on 2 or 3 cylinders until I feather the throttle to get it going properly. Sometimes it runs at idleing speed and then dies. As yet I have not had chance to get back to the dealers but I would be interested to hear of any other owners who are experiencing this problem
