Columbus Firmware
I'm doing this to see if I can get a unit that I'd bought as spares (for the working LCD display module) back to working. It was freezing up at the security code prompt after booting, although did once start working properly (although it did eventually freeze again after an hour or so) so I was fairly convinced that it wasn't corrupted firmware as reported as being the cause of the lockups all over the internet, as it wouldn't have worked at all if that was the case. I managed to confirm that is was on F/W 5238 with map version 6317 while it was working. I expect a previous owner had updated it (or tried to), as the label on the top says HW: H04 SW: 1004. I've now swapped the HDD for an 80GB drive, re-flowed the Flash chips with hot air to fix any dry or cracked solder joints, re-updated to firmware 5238, and installed maps V3, and so far it seems ok. Will see if it's still ok tomorrow, after it's had a chance to cool down and reset itself. Is there a way of copying the maps partition from the old HDD across to the new one? Of the three partitions on the drive, only one is recognised by Windows, and it doesn't look like it has map data on it. Would Macrium Reflect's exact/forensic partition copy mode do it?

Columbus Firmware
Excellent, Good, I will if I can get it working. I want to see if a new HDD fixes the freezing-up problem first, Not yet, until I know if the old HDD is the problem or if it's something wrong with the board. Got an old laptop HDD to try it with first. 😁

I'm also thinking of doing this to re-partition a replacement HDD. Will flashing 5238 retain the green Skoda branding and colour scheme or will it default to the red(?) VW scheme ? I think I read on another thread that more recent firmware versions are universal and will keep the branding (I assume there's something in hardware that identifies it as a Skoda unit) and just want to confirm that this is the case or if I read it wrong. I have the V3 maps DVD that originally came with the car. Will that work with 5238 or will I need to get hold of the newer maps too?

Thanks. I'll give it a go. What's the worst that can happen

I managed to find a donor on eBay with the freezing-up issue but with a working display & touchscreen; now nicely transplanted. So now I find myself with a spare locking-up main unit and a dicky display that could be fun to try to sort out Is there a recommended way of getting the metal backing plate off of the rear of the display module without breaking the plastic clips? Neither plastic surround nor metal tags seem to have enough give in them to easily release.

Is it just a different picture printed on the button, or does the panel have different functionality/connectivity to the main unit? I could cope with the 'wrong' symbol if it worked the same. I suspect the cables are different between models so they wont even plug in, but it's worth asking...

I don't think red lighting would be right How much would you charge for the correct one?

Indeed. VCDS shows no related radio faults. I suspect posting the whole unit to North Yorks would cost as much as a replacement display. Is there any difference between manufacturers, or would just swapping the display module for something like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384057860375 be an easy fix? Does the VW/Skoda/Etc branding sit in the display module or with the main radio unit?

Octavia Mk2 Columbus display colours changed whilst driving
Hi, At some point whilst driving, I noticed my display had changed from the usual green & black, to this inverted black & white. It still seems to be working, and I've turned the ignition off and tried the < > &Info soft reset, but not fixed it. It's not just that the green channel of the RGB has failed, as that would result in a magenta tint to everything. Making sure Day/Night mode is set to Day has no effect on non-map screens, as expected. I have access to VCDS if that would help diagnose or fix it...
