  1. Problem now sorted. A trip to my local dealer (Alex Lawrie) and an explanation of my problems resulted in a great service from them and a radio code.... Thanks!
  2. Hi folks, Just bought a used Symphony head unit from a VRS to replace the aftermarket head unit in my recently acquired Fabia. The problem is the new unit doesn't have a code. Is there anybody out there who can assist? The serial number is: SKZAZ8C1917816 Or any suggestions?? Many thanks.
  3. The problem is now fixed! Following several posts on Briskoda relating to the Central Electrical Module and problems with wipers, I decided to try this as my fault checking had eliminated most other common problems. I managed to pick up a secondhand unit off eBay and fitted this. This has now cured the problem and all is working again.
  4. Hi folks, hope you can help with this one. Just bought a new (secondhand) fabia 1 blackline. Driving home in the rain - switched on the wipers - all OK for a few sweeps of the screen and then nothing. Completed the rest of the journey with this as an intermittent fault. The rear wash wipe works. The front washers work. Just no front wipers. Checked out fuse 15 which looks OK but will try a swop with another. Could it be a bonnet switch I have read about elsewhere on Briskoda or something else. Your thoughts on this very welcome. Other than this it seems to be a great little car!
  5. It has been reported to the police and I do have a crime reference number. My son says that there is no damage to the other car bar for a scrape - my car panel pushed in and scratched. At the moment I don't have any of the other drivers details - save for the fact that I know car reg. and where they visit. It would seem that I'm between a rock and a hard place. Declare to insurance and risk losing my NCB for a bump that whilst annoying and ugly doesn't greatly affect the value or operation of the car; forget it and simmer or try and squeeze some money out of the third party privately in the hope that I can get a s/h door.
  6. Not been able to yet as the culprits were visiting the address when it happened. The home owner (a relative I believe) was very unhelpful and denied outright any responsibility to my son but has advised that the owner of the car will be at the address tomorrow. I will attempt to get details then.
  7. OK folks looking for some advice here. My 18 year old son parked up my Y reg Fabia while visiting his girlfirend and some dozy bint reversed her car into the rear passenger door, leaving a nice scratch and hefty dent. She realised what she had done but drove off without leaving her details (my son wasn't there but we have a witness who took down her reg. no.). The door needs a new skin (not available) so will need fairly extensive work and filling + spraying. I have been advised by one bodyshop that the cost is going to be about £800. An alternative might be a second hand door fitted and sprayed up (£350+vat). The cost of repairs may well outstrip the value of the car. My son reported the incident to the police but they don't seem particularly interested and have advised reporting it to my insurance company (not reported yet). I don't particularly want to go through my insurance company as I have a feeling I will be hammered for no-fault accident and can't really afford to as there is a £350 excess on the policy and don't want to lose my no claims. The likelihood is it will be scrapped if I do claim. It might be an old car but that shouldn't matter. I think that the third party are going to deny responsibility and duck and dive like hell to avoid any payment. Any ideas or suggestions as to where to go from here?
  8. The seats on my old Fabia were totally filthy and manky. I tried 'Vanish' on the front seat without any success. Took a different approach with the back seat squab and partially stripped it down (undoing the clips from underneath the seat cushion) but left it attached to the foam base. Gave it a good scrub with some diluted washing powder and rinsed off thoroughly. It took about a week to dry properly but the finished result is fantastic - looks like new. My problem now is to work through the rest of the car seat by seat. Very effective and cheap but slow.
  9. Cheers guys. Managed to get the mirror off - mighty fiddly. Screws, clips and door pulls all over the car now! As for the door lock barrel. Managed to get it out following one of the guides on the site here. It would appear that the lock had seized up. Phoned the local Skoda dealer who said they could get another barrel cut at the factory which would take two weeks and would cost about £65. As I'm on a very tight budget I decided to have a look myself. After liberal dousing of the barrel with WD40 and scraping away the corrosion and gunge of many years I managed to take (press out forcibly) each of the locking plates out of the barrel and clean them up. Reassembling one at a time and it seems to be OK. I have purchased a lock repair kit to replace the pin and cage at the back of the lock. A time consuming repair but hopefully it will have worked and saved a wad of cash (probably to spend on some other repair jobs!).
  10. Cheers! Thanks for all the help guys...
  11. Many thanks for the help so far folks. Couple more problems. The passenger door mirror has smashed off breaking the internal alloy fixing rendering it completely useless. How do you gain access to the fixing bolts - I assume the inner door card has got to be taken off but how? On an old Audi I had you could just take off the little internal plastic plate covering the mirror. The other problem is the drivers door lock barrel which appears to be turned out of alignment - the key won't lock the door. The only way to lock the car is from the inside and then lock the passenger door. Again the central locking doesn't work. I guess I'll have to strip the inner door card off and have a look. Any ideas or suggestions on this one? Many thanks Bob
  12. Will the wheels be stamped somewhere with the width? Good to know about the timing chain. The supplying dealer is now no longer in business so I guess, given the cars age, service schedule will not have been kept to. Hopefully with some TLC the car will give lots more service. Thanks for all the replies and advice so far.
  13. Just bought a 2001 Y reg Fabia 1.4 8v Classic petrol estate with unknown service history and several problems which I intend getting sorted before use. The car needs MOT so no doubt other problems will arise but the most immediate concerns are; tyres, service history and cambelt. The tyres are mismatched in terms of brand and the spare is down to the belting. The fitted tyres are 165 60 14s but I'm not sure that they are right. Can someone confirm what the correct size for this model. I've no service history or documentation. Is it possible to obtain a print out of service history from any Skoda dealer (assuming it has been serviced at a dealership). When should cambelts be changed on this model? Many thanks for your help and advice.
  14. No ticking sound on ours - just a (quite) pleasant raspy note....
