  1. Same on mine, except now it has split. Does anyone have an idea how much it costs to replace (parts/labour)?
  2. That's good news for me! I was wondering whether to keep the car another year or so or change it...looks like it's staying!
  3. For what it's worth, I'm just coming up to 150k kilometres, so close enough to 100k miles, in just under 4 years in a 1.9 tdi with a DSG box, with just routine servicing, and no problems with the car or with the box so far.
  4. Well at least on mine, it has "DSG" written in big letters on the shifter in the cabin.
  5. After 100,000 kilometres I'm getting between 5.75 and 6 litres per 100 km, which converts to 47-49 mpg. Admitted I'm light footed and have a fairly easy run to work (half on quiet country roads, half on motorway before the traffic starts) and I also use cruise control a lot.
  6. Like Manny, I've got two mounted in mine, by the centre vent. One for my phone and one for my iPod. They're fairly discrete since they are the same colour as the dash, good value and non destructive to the car. Find out more from the manufacturer's main site at Brodit.se.
  7. Left on automatic, the airco will send what it thinks to be hot air to the footwells, on the basis that hot air rises and fills the cabin. Obviously, on cold days, that theory only works well once the heater has some engine warmth to play with. I find it more comfortable these winter mornings to switch the ventillation to, say, demisting until the temperature indicator moves off its rest, then switch back to automatic.
  8. So I'm the only one old enough to remember when it was called the footbrake? Uh-oh. Does a zimmer frame fit easily in the boot?
  9. I'm sure you've worked it out anyway, but just to add that if the rear fog light is on, then the fronts are on too since the switch has to be moved from the off position through the Front only position to get to the rear on position. So if you're using the rears, then you've got the warning light on the dash. It's just a pain that you have to look at the light switch to make sure that you pushed it far enough to switch off both the front and the rear.
  10. Um, what exactly took years to clean, the powder or the carp? Sorry for the bad taste. Speaking of bad taste, had to use a powder extinguisher once to put out a chip pan fire, and as everyone has confirmed, the stuff gets everywhere, including over what was left of the chips, and sausages, and veggies. Tasted bl**dy awful.
  11. I'm sure it hasn't changed over the years: the front fog light warning light is incorporated into the light switch, and therefore cunningly hidden from view unless you make an effort to look. We all think it's stupid, but such is life.
  12. The mp3 player is more portable. To continue listening to music outside the car, personally I'd prefer a small mp3 player rather than having to take the head unit, speakers and battery out of the car to be able to continue listening to the cd. If you only want to listen in the car, then you have a good point. The cds would be a cheaper option too. Horses for courses really.
  13. That's probably a better bet than buying one now and sacrificing the chance to ever have a first born.
  14. Martin I'm curious as to what exactly you can control from the HU. I've got the "stand-alone" Dension ice-link that plugs into the back of my (non-Skoda) HU, and from what I can remember, you can only choose the playlist, plus forward/back. That's why I use the iPod interface (and have the iPod in a cradle next to the steering wheel.) That way I can scroll through all the iPod menus, selecting by artist/album/whatever rather than be limited to just 5 playlists. Admittedly, this is a two and half year old setup and maybe things have progressed, hence my quesiton just in case one day I change to a newer car.
  15. Next they'll be talking about their gamma ray and yobba ray analysis, and then you should really worry :P
  16. Perhaps they meant crinkle cut stone chips, just out of the deep fryer? The intense heat of the chip oil might cause the paint to blister?
  17. Not once, but twice!! Once to pull the brake on, and once to release it. How tiring is that? And with the arm rest extended, that's a really inconvenient thing to have to do, and you risk spilling your coffee. I mean, like, can't the people behind you just look away momentarily? Or put sunglasses on or something?
  18. You're right, but I've got an Apple Macintosh at home and couldn't resist the dig. It was a cheap shot, I know
  19. Nope, it revved away quite happily in first and reverse, just wouldn't change gear. No warning light, or audible warning. As I say, it really was just a one off. Because the traffic really was stop-start inching forward for over an hour, I didn't notice it until I was almost off the p
  20. Is enjoyment an issue? No? OK, well just a one-off incident that happened last year when stuck in stop-start traffic on the Paris p
  21. I'm sure if you went on to any other marque forum you'd find people complaining and listing faults as well. People tend to be more vocal when they have a problem than when things are going well. Independent surveys show that Skoda, and the Octavia, are well up there in the reliability stakes, and if that's your prime concern, then consider buying a Toyota or Mazda or Honda. I'm not convinced that that will guarantee you no problems though. On other criteria, such as comfort, space, cost to buy, cost to run, the Octavia comes out very well. In my case, the numbers added up and I'm very happy I made the choice. 2 years and 75000 kilometres later, I haven't had any problems that are worth mentioning and would happily buy again.
  22. I agree with other posters, there is something wrong there. The gerbox is perfectly capable of dealing with stop/start traffic and with parking manoevres where you're controlling speed with the brake rather than accelerator. Also, just to confirm, the DSG box prevents you starting the car in gear, but does let you start in either Park or Neutral.
  23. FYI, mine comes with the so-called "white" illumination, which more or less matches the black on white of the temperature read outs for the air-con and doesn't look too out of place against the rest of the dash's green lighting. IMHO the green Becker illumination might be a bit too green, but it's just my opinion. This is my second Becker unit and I'm happy with them. As you say, pretty simple to operate and the buttons are human sized so you can actually use them while driving without having to change glasses or look through the user manual
