  1. Thanks, I'll take a look later. Yes wipers work fine, so OK in the rain, just not so good with the bugs that now cover the window.
  2. What fuse is it that controls the front and rear screen wash? Can't find it in the handbook. Nothing comes out of the front or back, but when lights are on the headlight washers work as they should do. If I try and use the front washers and pull back on the stalk the wipers sweep as they should but when I try it again, there is nothing, have to wait a few minutes before it will work again. Any ideas before I get it booked in? Car is a November 2010 Superb Combi
  3. Everything is lovely and smooth, no odd noises on gear changes, acceleration except sudden increase in engine revs when you hit 1750 rpm. If you are extra extra gentle, then no no slip, but feed the power in normally to go from say a 30 to 40mph then it's likely to slip. Thanks for the link, starting to under stand dual mass flywheel and clutches. More familiar with the single flywheel and clutch set which was he norm through the 70's, 80's and 90's.
  4. Got in the wife's car this morning and as soon as I got to 1750 rpm in the third the revs shot up to 4000rm, same happened in all the other gears. Only gears this didn't happen was 1st and second. Car is 2 months shy of its fourth birthday and about 33,000 miles so a bit surprised that there is a clutch /dual mass flywheel issue on a car that spends no more than a quarter of its time doing town driving, it is mainly motor ways and large A roads. Has anyone else experienced this and could it be that on the Octavia there is a repeat or similar issue to the one they had in 2006 when 1600 cars were recalled for a dual mass flywheel problem; VOSA Skoda Octavia ii 2006 Recall Anyone got advice on how to go about trying to get Skoda to pay for this as a good will gesture at the very least as surely this sort of problem shouldn't appear on such a low mileage car with full Skoda variable service history? This will be the first car that I would of had to replace the clutch on, all my previous cars (admittedly not a Skoda) have all been high milers (100K to 150K)with full service history and none of those has clutches replaced and I'd usually put about 50K on these with no problems in that department. This and my Superb are the first cars I have and from new, so wondering if I made a mistake or just got unlucky. Electric window cable on drivers door failed after 40 months of ownership!
  5. Text messages which are received while the phone is connected to Columbus often end up on the SIM card memory for texts rather than the phone handset memory, so should still be accessible.
  6. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, it definitely gave me food for thought, so I feel I've at least made an informed decision, only time will tell if its the correct one. If Skoda decided with a good will repair, there was a chance I'd get the inspection fee back, but no guarantee, so the max cost would be at least £400, the least would be £45 as I'd have to go back and pay the local specialist for doing the inspection and securing the window. Therefore I've decided to go with the local independent specialist at £218 and they won't charge for the inspection. If it goes in another four years, I'll do what I did with the Ford Capri RS3100 when Ford stopped making the parts and start to stock up on the rare parts and the parts most commonly prone to failure with age. I think the law changed a while back meaning that a car under warranty could be serviced (and the warranty maintained) by an independent, provided branded (in this case VAG Group) parts are used. Normally the car goes to a Skoda main dealer near to my parents, just unfortunate that the last service didn't coincide with a visit to them and nearly got done in Belgium due to work commitments, but I was unable to find a dealer in the Brussels area that people would recommend, guess there aren't many from Belgium on the forum.
  7. Spoken to customer services and I need to take the car to the dealership I go the car from which is 70 miles away as the local dealerships near me have a poor reputation! I will have to pay the inspection cost which is £100 and show the car has main dealer service history, which it doesn't as the last service a couple of months back was by a Skoda specialist local to me that has a very good reputation and they secured the window in the upright position. So Skoda Customer Service have said no guarantee that I would get the a good will gesture, it all depends on what is found when the fault is inspected, so I could be spending more than is necessary as the independent has come back with a price all in of £218 for the repair which includes £45 discount and I haven't paid for the inspection, so if I don't go with them, I'll have to go back and pay an inspection fee just so the car was secure as you could slide the window down just by pushing it! So now at a bit of a dilemma, should I go with the independent or try my luck at the good will? Shame I had no internet access over the weekend while I was at the Classic Car Show in Birmingham to post this. Hindsight is such a wonderful thing ;-) Now going to think over my options.
  8. Thanks Silver 1011, will definitely do this
  9. Very disappointing considering the car when not in use is in the garage at home or an under cover car park at work. My mountain bike gets cleaned once in a blue moon but left to drip dry outside and the cables on that haven't ever gone rusty in the 10 years I've owned it so Skoda or VAG group as a whole must be using some extremely cheap poor quality parts. You would of thought the cable could have a plastic protective coating.
  10. Went to open the drivers side window to get the ticket to access a car park and there was a crack like breaking plastic and motor went but no window drop. Motor works fine, but no movement on the window and the car is only two days short of its fourth birthday. Took the car straight round to Skoda and apparently it is the cable connecting the motor to the mechanism that snapped due to the cable becoming frayed. Now waiting for a new cable but the garage couldn't find why the cable had become frayed. Must be either a cable that was faulty when the car manufactured or there is a rough edge on the guide and rollers, again which must be there when the car made, but without dismantling the whole door and removing every component for an inspection, the garage won't do any more unless I pay for it. The repair will be £250 and a thorough inspection is likely to double the price so I think I have to bite the bullet and hope this is just a one off. Anyone else experienced this type of failure?
  11. True, but we don't have a spare Skoda engine hanging around to slot in to get pictures and measurements for her project We know these things because we have been around for longer, a 15 year looking at this for the first time with no prior knowledge need to look at all possibilities and fathom out what the headaches might be, how to resolve them and what would be the best way forward. Someone else can make it a reality because I have enough on my plate restoring a car and I need the boot space for work:-) She at least deserves some credit for looking at something quite different and challenging herself.
  12. Before any one askes; this is a feasibility study as part of my daughters GCSE technology project. As the other car is off being restored after 40 years of regular use the choice of engine was easy, 160 bhp 6 cylinder 3100cc, so we slotted the engine in with 12mm clearance top and bottom (if done for real the tailgate would be removed) and on to some wood to get an idea of how much of the spare wheel well would need to be removed to fit it in. Now she knows this, she has to work out how to hook it up to a gearbox to drive the rear wheels so the power complements the 140 bhp 2000 cc 4 cylinder diesel upfront, but now she knows you hcan have a six xylinder Superb, I think her project plan is moving to a six cylinder up front too! So just as well the engine we were playing with at the weekend can be tuned to 580 bhp in full race trim. We strapped the engine down and went for a test drive just to see if the additional weight across the rear axle affected the handling too much and I must the car felt as secure as ever in the handling stakes and careful planning of where the gearbox would go will help balance things further. We frequent many custom car shows and this isn't the craziest mod we have seen to a Skoda, so you never know, once day it cold become a reality!
  13. Those locking wheel bolt head and key lok more substantial that what is currently on the car. The wheel is the original style wheel, it had to be replaced last year after a pothole opened up on the M1 J20 southbound exit. So currently making one claim a year for a buckled wheel and all happen at night in the wet so the whole looks like a lump of damp tar in the road! Hope the new bolts are similar in style to the ones Chan shows.
  14. While getting a buckled wheel replaced at the local tyre centre that I have used for over 20 years with no problems, they had a problem getting the wheel off as the locking wheel bolt and key failed. Anyone else experienced this? Looking at the design the key is relying on quite a small surface area to grip on the bolt so wondering if I should just forget about the locking wheel bolts? Also having trouble convincing Skoda that the locking bolt and key are the orginals because they insist there is a 7 digit number on the top and all mine has is a letter. I know it is the original key and bolts because I have had the car from new (Nov 2010).
  15. In the past dealers used to do all this for free, now started doing it myself as dealers (not just Skoda) are starting to charge the £80 DVLA fee and then adding on an admin fee which can bring the cost to £100 or more, so not always a case the number going on retention.
