  1. Thank you for all the advice on the interior light issue. I will have a go when I get some spare time and the use of a garage and update with the results. Any ideas on the needles for the fuel gauge and temp?
  2. My wife has a 2010 fabia vRS and the needles for the fuel and temp have been flickering for a few months. I did take out the clocks but it didn't seem there was anything I could do then. In the last month they have stopped working altogether. Then the interior light stopped working when the drivers door opened. I plugged it into VCDS and it said no signal from drivers door. I noticed last week that the dot matrix symbol for the drivers door open was not working all the time. It came on and then as the door opened further it went off. I thought it maybe a wire in the door flexible rubber which had chafed but not sure how to get it off to check. I tried looking under the dash to see if I could get to it for a look. I must have dislodged something as now the dot matrix display doesn't even come on when the drivers door opens. Does anyone have any constructive suggestions please?
  3. I put a set of Bilstein B6 shocks on my wife’s vRS and then a set of 20mm eibach lowering springs. It has transformed the handling and whilst it would be great on a smooth road or track, it is terrible over speed bumps. Max 10mph or you need your dentist on speed dial. I’m going to be changing the springs back to standard to see if that makes it any better.
  4. i agree that there should have been some sort of notification if I had swapped an engine from another vehicle which had already been allocated to a car and was on a V5 and on the system at DVLA. If a brand new engine, which had never been allocated or fitted into a car was used and simply stamped with the original engine number, then the record would not need to be changed. The other question is what happened to my old engine? Was it destroyed or was it used to rebuild another after being modified. If the block was re-used then the engine number would still be traceable. I think I will be contacting Skoda customer services tomorrow to see what they say. by the way, I was a traffic cop for 27 years until last year when I retired and hadn’t many dealings with the DVLA and enquiries int9 possible stolen vehicles with dodgy stamping son the engine. I was told that the engine number stamped onto the replacement engine would not be the same as the letters and numbers would be solid and not a series of dots. I haven’t had time to check this out yet. I assume it is on the gearbox side.
  5. I also managed to snap 2 today before visiting a friend who builds engines. He spent ages and cut a thread in which allowed me to get the adjuster in. Thanks for the info. Maybe it’s only the body shop who have the knowledge/ tools as you said. Thanks for the reply.
  6. Added car to thread now. Not on posting at that time. Lightcliffe was a main Skoda dealer, but then moved to Shelf, Halifax and changed to VW. They kept on the staff at the Shay site as they had all the kit to service Skoda. I have spoken to a master tech who is now independent and worked at Lightcliffe for a short time. He confirmed that the engine used to come blank from Skoda and they stamped the same engine number on the replacement engine. On a a slightly different note, I have just had to repair one of the headlamps with the repair brakets, £6 for all 3 instead of £122. However, the broken ones have the threaded adjusters in but the replacement ones are smooth and not threaded. How on earth are you supposed to put a thread in with a plastic adjuster. I managed to break 2 before going to a friend who builds engines and he managed to sort it for me. The parts dept at DM Keith, Bradford had no idea why they weren’t threaded and had no idea how to put a thread in.
  7. 2010 cave engine. Bought November 2012 with no knowledge of issues. Not on forum. Oil warning light came on January 2013. First. Is it to skoda approved garage and new breathe system replaced. Then used 2l of oil in 400 miles. New engine approved and fitted by Lightcliffe Skoda with 12000 miles on the clock. No paperwork for swap and told engine came blank and they re-stamped old engine number on so no need to inform DVLA! car now done 48000 miles and oil has to be topped up from time to time. Possibly half a litre every 1500 miles.
  8. I accept that it was a service campaign and not a recall. My mistake. The car went in first and they weighed the oil and then we did 600 miles. They weighed it again and it went in for the breather pipe modification. Again was told to do 600 miles, but after 400 the oil light came on and i had to put about a litre in to reach the bottom of the dipstick. I took it back again and this time they told me it was a new engine. I saw the engine in the crate, being a block, sump and cylinder head. I was told that Skoda supplied it as a complete unit so that it was easier to fit rather than stripping the engine and rebuilding it again. It took them a week to do the swap over and I kept calling in for a nosey, so i knew it was definitely replaced. Almost 2 yrs ago it went in for a service and there was a strange noise coming from the rear of the engine. There was a breather pipe which was sucking air and when i stripped it all down, I found that the rubber grommet was half way down the pipe and that there was also a torx bolt missing. All the work was done at Lightcliffe express Skoda, Shay Syke, Halifax. THeir customer service was much better than the local Skoda main dealer. There are no issues with the replacement engine and it hardly uses any oil. Just the query re no record.
  9. Hi there, I have the same issue with my wife's Fabia Vrs. Someone reversed and caught the front bumper. However, on further inspection it had broken 2 of the 3 brackets from the headlamp. I purchased new ones at a massive cost of £6.76 from Skoda. They went on fine, but they are not threaded and obviously the adjusters are. How did you manage to get a thread into the new brackets? Surely the plastic thread on the adjusters is not strong enough to make a new thread in the brackets.
  10. When my Octavia was in for service last week I spoke to the master tech and explained this and he said that with the engine swap would have cost between £6000 and £7000 with labour and all the extras. Surely they must have a record somewhere as they don't just throw that sort of money around with the number of exchanges they must have done.
  11. Sorry for the delay, but I have been working and searching dropbox for photos in relation to this. I have also read all the links Offski posted. Interesting reading. We bought the car in November 2012 with 12000 miles on the clock. On New Years Day we went for a drive and on our return the oil light came on. You know where this is going...... I took it to the local VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda service centre in Halifax. This is no longer operating as the dealership became the main Nissan dealers. They did the oil usage check and Skoda approved and supplied the upgraded breather system. After 400 miles it used 2.4 l of oil and Skoda approved a new engine. I visited them and saw the new engine in the crate and took a photo, which is dated 10/5/13, with the front bumper off ready for the exchange. I recall asking at the time whether the engine number would require altering and was informed that the new engine came blank and they stamped the old number on. This is what Skoda instructed them to do. There was no entry in the service record or any paperwork. The same garage wrote to me in relation to the gearbox recall, which was completed and is recorded on the vehicle service with Skoda, which is why I was surprised that the engine swap was not recorded.
  12. I fitted a set of Bilstein B6 with eibach 20mm lowering springs to my wife's Vrs. The shockers are suitable for standard springs or the 20mm lowering springs. The ride is a bit firmer than standard items and not too hard. I can't compare them with coilovers, as I have never experienced them. The roads are bad by us too, but the difference is worth it.
  13. Sorry if this has been asked previously, but after an extensive search, I could not find anything. I have just had my Octavia Vrs 4x4 in for a service and whilst at the service reception I enquired about the service record for my wife's Fabia Vrs Tsi. I explained that it had a new engine fitted which had been supplied by Skoda due to the oil burning issues we all know about. They have no record of a new engine being fitted. It was done by a specialist through Skoda after they fitted the new breather system. They could offer no explanation for this, which I found a bit strange as they have the gearbox oil recall recorded, which was done by the same specialist. Is this because Skoda don't want to admit that there was a fault, or some other reason. The new engine was fitted with just over 15000 miles on the clock, so not only would it prove that the engine has only covered 32000 miles, but that if we were to sell it, then that would be proof that it had been done and the new owner would have confidence that there would be no oil usage problems. Thanks in anticipation.
  14. Hi there. I fitted a Columbus sat nav unit with dab and said hard drive to my wife’s Fabia Vrs. It is compatible and everything works including rear parking sensors and the maxi dot dash display. It also plays dvds and has sd card. Not usb or bluetooth but worth considering. Rustynuts supplied and fitted it if you want to check out his details on the forum.
  15. Update re Alloygaitors. I fitted them on a brand new set of 17” diamond cut alloys to stop them being kerb damaged. This last week I was forced to remove them and found that the lacquer has all been damaged and the rims have started to corrode. The cost to have them done is going to be £300 which is what I paid for the wheels. Dilemma - pay £300 and have them like new or fit another set of alloygaitors at £60 or £100 fitted to cover up the damage. Didn’t do what I wanted them to do.
