  1. Bought a new mirror in the end - £68 inc VAT.
  2. The near side door mirror in my wife's Fabia won't move in and out - that is, when move the joystick left and right nothing happens. If you move the stick up and down, the mirror moves, but it's a bit jerky. If you push the mirror into position manually, it just slowly moves out of position. Having taken the door and mirror apart, it looks like two of the three tubes containing the control wires have come unstuck. If you pull all three tubes tight and use the joystick it works OK. If you let go, only one tube (the central one) works, the other two tubes seem to move rather than the wires inside them. Anyway, is there a quick fix (add some glue somewhere?), is there a small part required (just the boss and cable assembly?) or do I need a whole new mirror ( )? JP
  3. Autocar's top five big estates are the E-class, the Superb, the 5-series, the A6 and the V70 in that order. The E350CDi is about £35k as well. Looks nice though, plus I'd love a car with radar cruise.

  5. The mag came out a while ago. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/145964-the-superb-wins-top-gear-magazine-luxury-car-of-the-year-2009/
  6. Got my issue through yesterday. They drove the estate from the Czech Republic to Britain and concluded that after 500 miles they'd be more than happy to get in and do it all again. For some perspective, the Rolls-Royce Phantom won last year!
  7. On my 51 Octavia the wing mirrors went a bit pink but the rest of the paintwork was just fine. Chipped to ****, but fine colour wise.
  8. Yay! 10k in three months - you don't hang about! Yes it was peanuts - humm, car or PS3? Tough choice. If I'd been mechanically minded I'd have kept it. My brother and I were even thinking of getting a Biodiesel kit (and him swapping his V8 Disco for a TD4). But I'm cack handed at that kind of thing, so I left it to a pro I've bought a Smart CDi now. *ducks* Edit: and I won't hear anything against the interior. It's ivory / black and it's so much more cheerful than black black and more black.
  9. I put quite a lot of Morrison's B30 in Skudmissile's Octavia when I had it. I liked to think that it cleaned out the engine and kept the smoke down, but since I never followed myself I couldn't tell for sure. I do know that before I used it I managed to give my brother's Civic Type-S a bit of a misfire when he tried to follow me As for rotting rubber, I don't think the 110 is *that* old :p
  10. I bought a 10 month old Mk2 Fabia 1.2 12v from Wings. Nic was a very helpful salesperson; honest, friendly, completely un-pushy. They weren't going to budge on the price but it was fairly keen anyway. Nic even offered to clear up a small mark on the driver's seat without me having to mention it. The only downside was the finance quote was given as "5%" - I later found that's 5% 'flat rate' which is an APR of about 10%. Not the worst deal in the world for the relatively small amount involved. but not as good as it first seemed. They were happy for me to cancel the finance at any point up to the day before collection, so I was able to find a (slightly) better deal elsewhere. I'll definitely think about taking it back there for servicing despite the fact it's 20 miles in the opposite direction to work.
  11. Ditto. Quite fancy that Adaptive Chassis Control though. The Mk1 Octy was certainly a bit of a barge. J
  12. The Official Website for Volkswagen UK : Volkswagen UK Hopefully not long until it's in the Octavia. Can Skoda squeak their bigger car under 120g/km as well? If so, I'll get my chequebook! It's a shame the DSG model misses out. 1.6 TDi 90 62.8 mpg (manual only), 118 g/km 230 Nm 1.6 TDi 105 62.8 mpg (manual), 119 g/km 60.1 mpg (DSG), 123 g/km 250 Nm J
  13. No, not with VAG-COM. You need to edit the EEPROM memory in the dash cluster with a tool like VAG-TACHO. J
  14. Hi everyone, Well we needed a second car so I've just bought a 10 month old New Fabia in Silver from Wings in Peterborough. It's poverty spec, plus air conditioning and metallic paint. I actually think the black handles and mirrors suit the car quite nicely. It seems pretty quiet to drive and well put together inside. An improvement on the Fabia SDi courtesy car I once had, but obviously not quite the same as the Octavia. One question. The speedo goes up 160mph! By the way it's geared (20mph / 1000 rpm) it'll never get far over a ton. Maybe it's cost saving to only print one kind of speedo foil? Obviously, if it was a 2.0, I could understand .... J
  15. No headlamp washer jets? I was pretty sure the paint code was Corrida Red. You should be able to look it up from the front page of the service book. How much do you want for it?
  16. eBay. I didn't buy off this guy (AUX Line IN adapter VW, Audi MFD.10pin-2xRca 0,15m on eBay, also, Terminals Cabling, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 28-Apr-09 14:54:20 BST)) but that looks like the right sort of cable. J
  17. I hooked my iPhone up to my MFD unit using an Aux cable - blue DIN plug one end, two RCAs the other. That way, if I forgot my iPhone, or bought a new CD, I could resort to using the CD changer. OK, it's a bit of a pain having to select a track on the MP3 player before you set off but I could live with it. I popped the ash tray out of my Octavia and the iPhone and the aux in cable lived in there. Tidy. The audio aux in lead is cheap (well, relatively; it's still £20 odd) because it's just a lead. I believe the Video in requires a box to do some PAL/RGB wizardry so they cost quite a bit more. J
  18. pittVRS: I heard the scrappage scheme will be for cars over 9 years old. This one's only 7 and a half. I forgot the fourth option: I have comprehensive insurance, so I could give to to the insurer and collect (about) £500. I'm currently thinking the best option would be to put it on ebay as is. You would get the lot - a £300 nav unit with aux cable and p'n'p adaptor, a (rare) £150 maxidot dashpod, an original dashpod (minus the speedo foil), the original rad/cass, a pile of paperwork and a very reasonable collection of parts, ready assembled to save space. You could fix it, or break it at your leisure. Does £700 sound fair? J
  19. If I do break the car (and no you can't reserve bits on this thread, I'll start a new one in For Sale if it happens), how do you price items and how do you manage all that shipping? Maybe I should just say "Bring a spanner ... and cash ..." J
  20. Oh dear. I've been offered £350 as scrap, but there's at least £300 worth of satnav and dashpod in there. I'd like to get it off my drive as soon as possible but I just don't know what to do with it. The wheel may have been shunted (it certainly wobbles a lot), besides I don't really fancy driving it again. TDi 110 Elegance 170,000 miles Ivory bamboo cloth interior Skoda MFD Satnav Full maxidot Manuals, service history, pile of receipts It had some new front discs on Monday Three good alloys, three good tyres, unused spare on steel. My punishment (as if that wasn't bad enough) is having to buy a £1500 03 plate Kia Rio. Sporty. J
  21. Skospares are excellent. I've had some interior trim (he described all their Octavia ash tray lids to me over the phone so I could pick out the one for my Elegance) and a complete knuckle / bearing / hub flange assembly for a great price.
  22. I vote out of town. Plenty of fen roads to enjoy on the way
  23. We have one of those now (but it's mag mount :p ) so will do. J
  24. Well, I'm having huge fun with my Octavia. I had a wheel bearing fitted by an indy in Northampton. It cured a grinding noise, but I got bad wobble under braking. New discs cured that, but they then made a slow repetitive 'chuff' noise when pressing the brakes at very slow speeds. The garage tightened the hub nut and, on a subsequent visit, hammered something (the caliper carriers I think). Anyway, the wobble under braking came back shortly after and it was also wobbling badly under acceleration as well. My brother and I stripped the off-side front brakes several times over a few weeks and found a) the caliper was stuck, making the off-side disc considerably hotter than the near side there was bad run out on the disc c) the disc screw was missing and when I applied the brakes with the wheel removed, the disc jumped off the hub d) a new disc didn't completely cure the runout (we've put the old one back for now) e) because there was bad runout on the hub-flange underneath f) the hub nut was so tight, the air gun wouldn't remove it. It took a 7 foot bar  We finally concluded the wheel bearing was pressed in wonky and the caliper carriers were no longer straight. So, we've now fitted a whole new 2nd hand knuckle from skospares, complete with bearing and hub flange. The wobble under acceleration has gone completely, but it still wobbles a bit under braking. I'll try some heavy braking tomorrow to clean the discs up and if that fails, we'll put the new discs back on. I guess I should probably count myself lucky that nothing large has let go (yet), considering it's just rolled over 170,000. J
