  1. Thanks for your thoughts. Trouble is when I put the car into a local independent garage for a service, they said they did a diagnostic and no fault codes were showing. They had the car overnight as I said that the problem usually occurs when it has been standing overnight. They drove it several times to see if the problem occurred again and as usually happens with anything like this, the car decided to behave. It did not lose power when I drove to the station this morning so I could not check if any lights were coming up. I am not a mechanic so am totally at a loss. It was even suggested that it might be something to do with the way I was driving!! I might be a woman but I know when the car is not right and am not imagining it!!! I will probably be putting it into Skoda for a check but they want to charge £99 to look at it. I just wondered if anyone on this forum could point me in the right direction - it has worked before. The last time the battery kept dying and this forum pointed to a small blue wire which had broken so it saved many hours and loads of money in diagnostics! Thank God for Briskoda!!
  2. I have a Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI - starts okay, drives ok for about a mile then power loss, does not cut out but goes again within seconds - puff of black smoke from exhaust - previously it was white smoke - just had an oil change and service and asked the garage to diagnose problem - they also put an engine cleaner through it but could not find any fault codes and when they drove it no problem - tonight was worse as the power dropped considerably and I heard what I can only describe as the noise you get when you put a piece of card on a spinning bicycle wheel - sort of clicking - did not notice any lights on dashboard - will look for lights tomorrow if it does it again. There are 121.5K miles on the clock. New MAF six months ago and new battery. what's the problem?
  3. Hi all I have a 51 plate 1.9 TDI Fabia Elegance. Going to put it in for a major service but in the meantime have developed a turbo problem. Car is now driving like my old Fabia Classic 1.4 8valve - in fact probably worse. Car goes but turbo not kicking in. I have been advised by various family members that in order to diagose this I am better off getting a skoda mechanic to look at it. However, can't seem to find a skoda specialist locally - main dealers 15 miles away and I am nervous about driving the car too far in its current state as well as the main dealer pricing. I do know a good guy but he's 85 miles away. Just wondered if anyone knew of a good skoda mechanic or garage specialising in Skodas near to Haywards Heath in West Sussex. Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good garage in the area where the guys know their stuff? I will be checking out Lindfield Garage in Bridge Road, they look professional and give an itemised list of what is included in a major service but are not Skoda specialists so am not sure if they can pinpoint the turbo problem quickly. Has anyone ever used them? Would really appreciate opinions on this. Thanks
  4. Thanks Fordfan. There are no lights on and the glow plugs come on and go out immediately when starting. The only thing I noticed was that there was a "beep" but no lights showing when driving. However, the "insp" message keeps appearing. Will have to bite the bullet and put the car in as you suggest and hope it's not horrendously expensive. Good old Barclaycard!
  5. Help please. I have a 2001 51 plate Fabia Elegance TDI. Bought July 2010 with full service history. It was driven hard on Monday in torrential rain and now I seem to be suffering power problems. The car starts fine, pulls away fine but doesn't accelerate as it should bearing in mind it's a turbo. Tonight going up a slight incline it was really sluggish then surged forward and behaved normally. Don't think it's the cold as it has been fine up to now. Has anyone got any idea what the problem could be? Can't tell from the service book when the fuel filter was last changed. Air filter replaced Jan 2010. I am not a mechanic so haven't a clue and wanted to get an idea before I put the car in the hands of an expensive main dealer.
  6. Any idea what sort of money plugging a vagcom in costs (I assume that this is a diagnostics tool?). Sorry but I don't have much experience of garages apart from MOT's etc - the car has always been so reliable!
  7. Hi Everyone, I have a 51 plate TDI Fabia Elegance. My speedo needle is playing up (maybe it doesn't like the cold). Three times I noticed it wasn't working then it righted itself. On Friday I started the car and drove home (2 miles) and it didn't work. Rev counter, fuel gauge and temp gauge all working as are the lights, rear window heater, heated seats. No warning lights coming up. Took the car to Euromaster on Saturday to get the battery checked. Battery failing (73%) so I replaced the battery. Alternator tested at the same time. All good. Drove the car home and the speedo worked. Great as I have to drive to the West Country (200 miles) on Friday. Didn't drive the car on Sunday. Monday morning drove to the station to go to work - speedo not working. Drove home tonight - speedo not working. Anyone any idea as the thought of driving on the motorway at the weekend without a speedo is very scary!! I would be very grateful for any opinions. Thanks, Edge
  8. Hi I have a 1.9TDI 51 plate Elegance about 113,000 miles on the clock. I have noticed a couple of times now going along that the speedo is not working - stuck on 0mph! It has righted itself I think when I went over a bumpy part of the road. Anyone know what can be causing this? Rev counter and everything else seems to work. Bit nervous about going to a garage blind as being a woman I have been ripped off in the past. Would appreciate some advice. Thanks
  9. Hi After the insurance company scrapped my beloved Fabia classic I went out and bought a 51 plate Fabia Elegance TDI. The manual says the car has a handsfree kit fitted (confirmed - there is a rectangular plug under the dashboard by the glovebox). I contacted my local Skoda dealer who quoted over £320 for the adaptor! Does this sound right? I don't want to buy a phone just plug my existing phone in or do these things cost that much because it's wired into the car? Would be interested to know if this is right and why. Edge
