  1. Hi All, Have 4 year old 1.6 TDI Octavia with 90,000 miles. I thought I had a problem with the clutch release bearing as I could feel a vibration coming up through the clutch pedal and associated noise when using the clutch. So I took the car to the main dealer and lo and behold they want €1,000 - €1,100 to replace the dual mass flywheel. They said that its life depends on the driving style but I am a sympathetic driver and can normally get over 400,000 miles from a clutch so at only 90,000 miles I was shocked and my fear is if I get this work done am I going to be back 90,000 miles later for another one? From looking through the forum some people seem to be changing back to single flywheel as there seems to be some issues with the dual mass. I have changed clutches and gearboxes etc before albeit when cars were simpler and due to the cost of repair I am considering getting stuck in myself on this one and maybe changing to a single flywheel. So my questions as follows: Is the dual mass known to be troublesome? Is the advise to change to single? What is the cost of Dual flywheel? What is the cost of single flywheel? Where can I buy the parts for reasonable money? (I'm happy to source from UK or Ireland) Are there any on-line guides on how to carry out this repair. Thanks!
  2. Okay...the reason I put this posting is because I tackled the right hand wheel first and seen no brake wear sensor. Apparently it's on the left hand wheel only - just one sensor on the inner (piston) side. In my opinion this is a bit of a poor design and for the following reasons... It was the right hand side that wore quicker for me - by a lot too - and I really cant say why that might be. Click on the picture below of the right hand pads with the outer one beginning to score but with 5mm still on the inner one... And below are the left side pair both quite even and still with considerable meat. Note the sensor is on the left side set only and on the inner (piston) pad... Below is the new set sitting into the left hand caliper - but why is the sensor wiring entering the pad at that distance away from the metal back plate - isn't the disk going to eat into it way before it is nearly worn... Just like it did below on the old one even though there's plenty of meat left... So it leaves me wondering firstly as to why the wires do not enter the pad perhaps from behind the and perpendicular to the back plate and maybe penetrating into the brake material by a couple of mm and secondly why there is no sensor on the right hand wheel also - how much more would it have cost? Also - I'm wondering that even if the above was the case it still wouldn't have given me any sensory type warning as it was the outer pad that wore to the back plate rather than the inner pad. I think there's something weird on my car that that one pad alone wore to 1mm whilst all the others were about 5mm?
  3. Just phoned the main dealer and had them punch in my reg number. I gave them the associated part # of the bits I bought (1K0-698-151-F) and they told me that the part # is correct for my car and that there is only one type of brake pad made and that is the type with the wear sensor wiring and so I should snip the wiring if I don't require it! I must check on the old pad was there a snip that took place there too as it rolled along the assembly line as this is the first change from new... I'll report back later...
  4. I have a year 2010, 1.6 TDI Octavia Elegance - 88,000 miles from new. Now the front brake pads are starting to do metal on metal. I bought a new set from a main dealer, not where the car was purchased from, and when I removed the outer and inner pad from (did the right hand side first) they have no wear sensor wire and plug as compared to the new ones in the box that do! Nor of course did I get any dashboard wear warning lamp. I did notice that the inner pad which would carriy the sensor wire (if it were fitted) still had a reasonable amount of meat on it although it was the outer one that was totally worn away! Have I got the wrong new pads or do I just snip the wires off and fit them anyway? Appreciate the help!
  5. Thanks Guys... It seems like a balls of an idea that the dashboard reset would do this? I wonder what Skoda were thinking about with this line of programming? Ok, let me see if I can get my hands on one of those VCDS things...
  6. Hi All, Bought my Octavia in February 2010 and I understand that its shipped on QG1 (flexible/variable service interval. However, at the 1,500K 1000 mile)service the dealer decided to revert to fixed interval - guess he wanted to see me or my wallet more often At the 15,000K (10,000 miles) I had them put it back on the flexible/variable again and we used the high spec oil for that service. The car flagged me for its next service at 38,000 miles!! Thats 28,000 on the same oil/filter - thats a lot of miles on the same oil - is that normal for regular type driving? Anyway - here's the real query... I changed the oil and filter, did the reset through the dashboard MFI but it now showing 9,400 miles or 370 days to next service! I was expecting it to read more like 25,000 miles or 700 days until next service. It's like it has gone back to fixed interval service QG0 (or is it QG2)It's now on its merry way counting back to 0 as its now 9,200 and decreasing. Any advice on why this might be? Thanks... Irlanski
  7. New Octavia 1.6 Diesel Saloon... 37,500 miles on the front! Continental EcoConti3's. Rears still going strong! I'll have to admit I wore them well into the wear mark zone - and beyond! Replaced with the same tyres.
  8. Thanks Kev, but can I ask you why that is? Do your customers ask for this changeover to fixed or is it something you do for a particular reason? Thanks... Irlanski
  9. Hi All, My early 2010 Octavia 1.6 TDI 105bhp is due a service. The first was at 1,500K, next at 16,500K and now at 31,500K. I want to go the Variable Service Interval from here out. I understand that VW 507.00 fully synthetic is required. So I telephoned my dealer to "put them on notice" about this. However the dealer tells me that my car although bought on QG1 setting has been restored to the fixed setting (is that QG0 or QG2 i'm not sure) and that they never heard of people wanting the Variable interval and they said that anyway that oil is too expensive and we'd have to get it in! I said that I can get it for €135 (say £120) for 20 litres and that I will bring the required quantity. They declined saying that that might affect the warranty. They also said "shur isn't the car better getting serviced more regularly anyway?" So I am left with only the option of remaining on fixed (from that dealer anyway) Questions... Is this a nonsence they are spinning me? Surely they should just stock the oil in the event that a customet wished to go on Variable. Maybe they are right, people don't want variable? Are their any issues with chopping and changing from fixed to variable and back again (so long as the computer is updated? Thanks for the help... Irlanski
  10. Hi All, Bought the new Octavia 1.6 TDI CR last Feb, very pleased with it. However, the book does not list oil specifications for the 1.6 Diesel  . I'm trying to get my head around the notion of all the VW type oils and the idea of fixed / flexible service interval. Can anybody tell me what oil type is recommended for this car? I would ideally like to run the flexible service interval and is that a different oil type from the fixed interval? Thanks...
