  1. Hello Does anyone know what the part number is for the alternator fitted to my car 1999 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi (90bhp) estate manual. I've tried to find a part number on the current unit as installed, but can't see that much of it, and don't really want to start taking it to bits to find the number as I'm using the car everyday.. I can supply the VIN and/or Reg number is anyone has a parts catalogue against these. Also where's the best place to get an alternator from.. I'm sort of assuming that the cost of a new OEM from the local dealer is going to be in the 300-400 quid range, so am happy with recon ones.. or one from a scrappy if it's cheap enough Cheers Dave
  2. Hello, just gone and started my octavia (1.9Tdi GLx Estate 90bhp 1999 manual) started fine, but a couple of seconds after starting there is a strange metallic noise form the engine.. with the bonnet up it seems to be coming from around the alternator area.. How do I check to see if it's the alternator bearings have gone.. and is there anything else it could be.. Can you replace just the alternator bearings.. or is it just a case or buying a complete re-con'd unit? Thanks for your help.. Dave
  3. Thanks all.. Is it a fairly easy job to change the master cylinder.. I've done other bits of the brake system before.. but never a master cylinder..
  4. Hello.. I've got a strange problem with my brakes (Skoda Octavia 1999 1.9Tdi (90bhp) Estate Manual). A few times resently when I've put my foot on the brake pedal to brake the pedal has gone almost down to the floor and I slow very slowly.. it's almost as if I have no servo, but taking my foot off the pedal and back on it's back to it's normal solid feeling... I can't see that I'm losing any brake fluid, the level is remaining on max.. and the fluid itself was replaced about 3 months ago.. I know that the front discs are coming up to having to be replaced, but I can't see that having this intermittant problem It's done this now about 6 times I guess.. but all within two driving times (if that makes sense).. Switch the engine off and back on and don't get the problem again for a little while.. It's done this on slowing me when coming off the motorway.. and just slowing in town.. so I don't think it's a brake fade problem.. Any thoughts.. Thank you Dave
  5. Thanks.. once it has stopped raining here and I've some spare time, I'll have to do some investigating.. Thanks once again Dave
  6. Thanks for that.. so assuming I've already got the door casing off, what/where am I looking for said micro-switch.. Is it a just replace it, or can you clean it type thing So really dumb questions tonight Dave
  7. Hello all I've got a 1999 Octivia 1.9 TDi (90bhp) GLx Estate.. and the rear (drivers side) door not locking is doing my head in About a year ago someone who I used to work with managed (not quite sure how, but they have VAGcom) to activate drive away locking.. so all worked great, once over 20kph all the doors lock.. the problem is now that the rear (drivers side) doesn't seem to want to stay locked.. it locks (along with all the other doors) and unlocks itself straight away.. normally it doesn't bother me, but have recently started driving more stop start routes, and every time i hit 20kph lock/unlock from the door... However if I lock the car on the key or remote, the door always locks with no problems. Thanks all Dave
  8. I've currently got a Mk1 '99 Octy 1.9Tdi (90bhp) Estate, which has 163k on the clock and thinking that it's soon time for a change. I'm interested in the MK2 Octy 4x4 for.. a) the extra ground clearance (I've already had a cracked sump - roads round here are that bad) I do alot of camping/outdoor activites and have had a couple of time where power to the rear wheels would have been quite useful c) the mrs has said that we are going from tents to caravans when the sprogs turn up.. From the skoda website all it tells me is that the 4x4 has increased ground clearance - but not how much - anyone know? With the Scout another 17mm over the 4x4. As I understand it the standard 4x4 has both the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI (the Scout only 2.0TDi). So if I stick with the 4x4 - is the 2.0 really worth the extra over the 1.9? And is the Scout really that good - all the road test seem to think so - but what do people who own them say. I know nothing about caravan - so would the extra 200kgs in max towing weight that the 2.0TDi gives really make any difference? What should I be aware of - what problems do they have? Any other comments welcome Thanks All
  9. Hello, I've got an aftermarket Cobra Alarm/Immobiliser fitted to my 99 Octy 1.9Tdi Estate (was on when I brought the car). Normally if the immobiliser is on the LED flashes, and if you try and start the car all the warning lights, except the glow-plugs, come on and the engine just cranks. Switch it off with the igntion on and the glow-plugs lights come on, and the engine will crank and fire. About a week ago (having not used the car for a week) the immobiliser part of it would not switch off, engine would turn but not catch. It still wouldn't turn off using the overide key fob, or the igniton on/off sequence. Anyway after some more pressing of buttons and rude words it switched off, engine started and I was a happy bunny once more. Until today that is, was driving along the A46 (three lane dual carriage-way) when I noticed that the immobiliser LED suddenly lit up, then the engine died and the LED started to flash as if in a normal on state...... Not fun having the engine died doing 60+... Anyway, managed to pull it off the road and up a slip road - but it didn't want to start again. This time as last time the car immobilisition warning light goes out - so I know that the car is happy with the key. I've checked the alarm fob - batteries are fine, car is in good condition - had major service 3k ago, car battery has good voltage.. Anyother thoughts before I remove the stupid thing - btw its not the first time I've had trouble with this alarm - about 6 months ago if I set the alarm active, it would flatten the battery over 48hrs, if I didn't set the alarm the battery was fine. And leaving the battery disconnected from the car - the battery held it's voltage... Oh The Alarm/Immobiliser in question is a 7928 with a 1984 immobiliser
  10. And my Mk1 being a V-Reg is even older. Only difference being is it's mines an Estate is white and had a very hard life - but at 162k it has a good few years in it yet..
  11. I've got a 90bhp TDi Octavia and if I leave changing the oil too long the economy drops off - the car does seem to like clean oil. The other thing I've found, as I only tend to potter to work etc with the car is, once up to temp drove it like you stole it for a bit - it then seems to feel better. I used to have an old Ford Orion - same thing 55mpg every tank, then it would just drop to about 40mpg - change the oil and filter - back to 55mpg again..
  12. Realising that with only me working (wife was made redundant) one of the cars will prob have to go. I've got an Octavia - wife has a Seat Arosa. Anyhow, trying to work out what my car is worth should we decide to sell, so 1999 Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9TDi (90bhp) in White. Cloth trim, 4x electric windows, air con (but not climate control). Rear Centre belt is lap only NOT three point - and hence only two rear headrests. Two owners + garage from new. For some reason the garage I bought it from had registrered it as their vehicle not as trade. I've owned it for the last 4 and abit years. Currently just under 160,000 miles with full service history - Skoda upto round 140,000 then local Seat Specialist since, and just about to have 60k service and new cambelt (inc water pump etc) - I bought the car at 100,000 and taking no chances changed the cambelt. New clutch around 10k ago Generally in ok condition - it has been used and there are a couple of stone chips with some surface rust (and a little surface rusting around where the roof bars attach to the roof) MOT till Feb 08, Tax till Jan 08 Thanks Dave
  13. Hello, I've got a 1999 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi GLX Estate Manua Its currently fitted with a detechable tow-bar and single electrics (for trailer/caravan lights only). I would like to fit the second electric socket, for towing caravan. Is this as simiple as getting the parts (what every they may be) from Skoda and pluging them in - or is it going to be one of those stupid times, where I have to remove all the current electrics and then use a new 'twin' electrics kit Any help welcomed Cheers Dave
  14. Thanks for that, how easy it is to install yourself - trying to save the pennies
  15. All of a sudden my immobiliser light on the daskboard (the orange one of the key in the car) has started to flash sometimes when I start the car. Switching off the ignition and turning it back on seems to cure it. I can only think this is linked to the fact that the mrs dropped my car keys a couple of weeks ago, and now there is a rattle from the key. It is sort of the same as this thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/diagnostics-vag-com/1998-octavia-immobiliser-problem/58539/?highlight=Immobiliser, but my engine has never failed to start, or engine cut out. The light just sits there flashing at me. Switching off and restarting fixes it. Any Ideas, don't really want to get stuck somewhere. Thanks Dave
