  1. Well it lasted a couple of days. Seized again. This time i freed it off without removing the cat pipe, just removed the heat shield, sprayed some plus gas on the pivot and moved it with a small adjustable spanner. was stuck but as soon as it was moved it was free. I think VW should be replacing the part for free as its a design fault. I bought the car used from a dealer under Das Welt "as good as new", now its 22 months since. and out of warranty. However I have no leverage as it was diagnosed at a different dealer to purchase..... this dealer is offering 50% contribution (£800), as I'm "such a valued customer". I never spent a penny with this franchise beyond diagnosis fee and the new actuator, how can I be a valued customer to the tune of £800? I think the contribution must be coming from VW but they don't want to admit that there is a problem with these turbos.
  2. Yes.... before shelling out I thought I would do some due diligence. This is a 2013 variant EA211 series engine with belt driven cam, CJZA engine code 1.2TSI 105hp 38k miles. Actually fitted in a Golf, but this is a far better technical forum than I've found elsewhere....and this engine is in Fabias and Octavias in the same tune. So the car went to VW to be diagnosed, engine light and down on power. They decided the wastegate actuator needed to be replaced, VW contributed the parts as there is a TSB on this part. Car was no different. Took it back and they said it needed a turbo, but there was no contribution volunteered from VW. I was suspect.... there was no whining noises from the turbo, no oil consumption no evidence there was anything wrong with the turbo apart from "P334b Charge pressure actuator mechanical malfunction" being logged. I rather felt the turbo itself was fine. Now at low revs driving the wastegate is open, only when you boot it to join the motorway is the wastegate closed and exhaust directed through the turbo. My wife usually drives this car, and very sedately.... So I rather suspected the wastgate actuating arm was seized or sticky as perhaps we are not asking it to move often. I loosened the actuator mounting bolts and tried to move the arm that the wastgate actuator moves by hand - no chance. You should be able to move this freely, it was stuck solid, bit of plus gas and it was still stuck. Did the VW garage even check this?!!!?! So I removed the heatsheild from the top, undid the catalytic converter mounts, released the v band clamp holding the cat onto the turbo and moved it away. Now we can see the wastegate itself, just a little flap. Liberal dousing in plus gas and some mole grips to add a little gentle persuasion. Is this is the world's smallest turbo charger? Not sure what those white crumbs are.... Wastegate now moves freely. Crucially with the actuator done back up you can move this by hand too - so could be a quick check for anyone following this thread. I gave the car a good drive with plenty of hard acceleration and the turbo is working perfectly. Who know how long before it seizes again though. A new turbo is £550 + £40 fitting kit (seals and nuts) from Mahle, for some reason there is a special price on these.....I wonder if the actuator pivot is engineered differently? They do have a revised part number. I wonder if I am the victim of a design fault - they should know how to make a wastegate by now..... Now to replace the cam belt that I never knew I had (was told all 1.2TSI were chain cam when I bought it....), needs doing at 5 years.
  3. How is your car holdng up? I have same age car with the same engine, they fitted a new actuator, but fault persists, now needs a new turbo at £1600
  4. gazzcross thanks a lot for this guide! I fitted a towbar to my mothers Fabia 3 estate on Sunday. I went with the westfalia tow bar (£200 on ebay from Germany) as I know westfalia are often OE fit, but went with a bypass relay for the electrics as its much simpler to fit than the factory loom which requires a lot of dismantling to run wires. special tools to assemble plugs, coding with the dealer computer or vcds and costs £150. I used a TEB7AS bypass relay (£12 from ebay) . I located it in the NSR quarter under the trim where the loom comes in from the tow bar. I hooked into the supply to the boot accessory socket for +12v (already protected by a 10a/15a fuse at the fuse box) and the ground ahead of the NS wheel arch. I worked out the wiring colours by just looking at the bulb holders from the cluster. I deduced the following (numbered from the top of the cluster connector): LEFT: Black Purple: Left Indicator Black Grey: Side / Brake multiplex Black Blue: reverse light Brown: Ground No wire: (would be fog light, its there in the cluster, but no wire) Grey Black: Side lights around the edge of cluster RIGHT: Purple White: Right Indicator Grey green: Side / brake multiplex Black Blue: Reverse light Brown: ground Grey White: Fog light Grey Red: Side lights around the edge of cluster HOWEVER you don't need to connect all those to the TEB7AS. Since the Fabia 3 uses multiplex wiring for the side / brake lights you just need one connection from the brake light to the TEB7AS and not both sides side lights. See: http://www.towbarsdirect.co.uk/images/M7-WK7.pdf - So from the left cluster feed loom I picked up: 1) left indicator and 2) side / brake multiplex This is easy as you will already have the trim panel off that side for access to :12v and ground point. - From the Right side cluster you need 1) right Indicator and 5) fog light To pick these wires up I removed the right cluster, and poked a long zip tie with the head cut off horizontally behind the interior trim toward the loom hole. This popped through the hole. I then taped 2 wires together then to the end of the tie and pulled the wire through. Then lever the trim away form the body down to the boot floor and poke the wire behind there, then tape the wire under the boot lock panel back to the NSR quarter where the relay will reside. I soldered all connections and protected with heatshrink and taped back up the looms.
  5. After a long long battle of being palmed off - 2 years - I took up the mantle in May as you see above. I had an Xperia Z3 Compact at the time of purchase of the car and that never worked. The dealer took the car in and couldn't get the unit to connect to any phone in their possession on the list. Still they / Skoda wouldn't fix it even though the car is in warranty! I was offered tom tom units etc but no way are they close to what was purchased. However after writing a letter before action to formally reject the car, the Fabia III has just had a kenwood garmin nav unit fitted FOC by the dealer. Keep going! Don't let them palm you off, they know all about this problem but will pretend otherwise. Unfortunately my dad didn't live long enough to see this battle won :( After 4x new Skodas bought in the family, we are never ever going to buy another due to this experience! A component in warranty did not work, and they just flatly refused to fix it for so long.
  6. Ok I got a VW one off ebay, so far as I can tell the only difference is the outer cardboard sleeve of the packaging... Now to get a fabia extension wire. Has anyone had any luck tracking down updated maps for these - apparently the Kenwood part is KNASD28E but its well over €120 anywhere I can find, which smarts a bit after paying for the unit - a new unit should at least come with the latest maps!
  7. Anyone got a lead on more of these at this price? Missed out....
  8. Whats required to fit this to a fabia 3 with crappy mirrorlink? does it need coding to the car?
  9. Does anyone know how to contact Kate from skoda who seems to know all about this? I'm sick of being passed off. Dad bought car for mum specifically as it had sat nav capability with his phone, he is now seriously ill and cannot keep negotiating as he has put up with it for over a year. Mum got lost on the way to hospital to visit him, really needs sat nav working in some capacity. The Kenwood unit sounds like a fix to me.
