  1. I have a Sept 2010 1.2tsi which I have owned from new. I also had the cam chain rattle but I had this work done under warranty at one of my services - without even raising the subject! At the time I knew many of us had the same noise but I got the impression it was normal. I think this was approx. 2.5 yrs old and probably around 40K mileage. My memory is that they changed the cam chain and the tensioner at the same time. I can check the receipt at some point and advise. So from my perspective it seems like my dealer did this work as part of a service recall (if that is the right term) without any prompting from me. On that basis I wonder if SUK could advise why this was not done on your vehicle - assuming you always kept to service intervals, etc. I expect others may be able to advise their experiences. I can say it did solve the rattle anyway. Hope this helps a little.
  2. Hi My car is a fair bit older than yours (2010 1.2 tsi DSG) and is out of warranty. A month ago the car went into limp mode with symptoms similar to yours - EPC light and TCS on. It would reset briefly following ignition off but reappear again immediately. Recovery service diagnosed a misfire, but couldn't fix it at the roadside. To cut a long story short, replacement of the HT leads solved the problem. Seems the newer versions of the 1.2 tsi have a modification which includes a ribbed sleeve for each of the leads as they go over the rocker cover. Apparently the heat from the engine cause the leads to break down. My car has done fairly high mileage though (approx. 52K at time). There are a few links to problem here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/266649-car-judders-and-epc-light-comes-on/ http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/273839-tsi-ht-lead-failure/ Not sure if your car has the mod, but if not then this might be worth checking out? My dad has a 13 plate with same engine and his has the modified leads. In retrospect I had begun to notice a slight 'hesitation' at idle for a few months before the breakdown, but didn't really think it a problem! Hope you get yours sorted. Mike
  3. Old Webbo When my car was around 2.5 yrs old I had the coolant light come on. I had generally kept an eye on all the fluid levels before that and had noticed it was nearer the Min than the Max line. I also park on a slope so not always easy to judge. The light came on at just beneath the Min line. Anyway, having read the manual and seen the warning there that I should get this checked I decided to call Skoda assist. The guy came out, topped it up and told me that this was likely due to general expansion of the hoses. I.e. a very small increase in diameter (probably due to ageing) across all the hoses will result in a slightly larger volume to fill in the system and hence level dropping below the minimum. This made sense to me. It has been fine since then. I've done 42,000 now and prob had about 36,000 on clock then - but seems like it relates to age rather than mileage? Of course all the advice to check for leaks, etc is still the first thing to do (and the Skoda assist man did do this before reaching his conclusion). Hope this helps.
  4. Apologies for this question as I know it has been asked before (I've searched the forum) - but is there a particular knack to removing the dipped beam H7 bulb/holder? I've seen the various photos and descriptions of them being 'pretty tight'. I've tried turning anti-clockwise as per the instructions and owners manual but can't get them to budge. Could I use grips or would this risk breaking something? Any tips would be gratefully received. At the moment it is frustrating that I can't seem to do what should be a pretty simple maintenance task. MIne is a 2010 Elegance with separate dipped and main beam H7s. Cheers
  5. No idea if this will help at all, but here goes anyway.... Soon after I had my 60 plate car, during the cold winter of 2010 I had a problem where the rear wash wipe pipe split behind the dash (apparently the pipe is bundled into the wiring loom......). I noticed water in the footwell and on my feet when using the rear wash/wipe. I know you have said you have dry footwells, but could you possibly have a split somewhere that is contained behind the dash? Unlikely I know, but just an idea. Apart from the wet feet I noticed that the rear wash water was struggling to get water out of the nozzle (hardly surprising due to split) - have you noticed anything similar with your rear wash/wipe perhaps? Hope you get it sorted. Cheers
  6. I've noticed with mine that if I select reverse before I put the front wipers on then the rear one does not automatically start. It does if the fronts are on before reverse selected. Not sure if this helps - generally I'd prefer if it always came on.....
  7. I recently enquired via the SUK contact page about extending my warranty after the third year. I had read on the forums that buying direct from them would give the full Skoda backed warranty (for example the same as the recently introduced 4th/5th year extension available when purchasing a new vehicle). However I was advised that any extended warranty needs to be organised through the dealer network and would essentially be an insurance type warranty. Does anyone have direct experience of purchasing directly through SUK, maybe with a link or number? For me a full Skoda backed extended warranty would be preferable to an insurance based one.
  8. Thanks for the replies. I think I was probably worrying about nothing. Having looked at these comments and considered when it happens - it's normally when the car is warm, there's been a fair bit of stop/start in traffic and also when the car is carrying more than just me. I certainly haven't noticed it recently. Incidentally irfant, I think I've had the gearbox update - the same time I had my turbo shim fixed - as this cured the previous hesitation many of us experienced. Cheers
  9. Hi Has anyone else out there with a DSG box noticed a judder in 2nd gear? It's not noticeable from standstill going up through the gears. However, I do feel it most when the car is crawling, still (just) in D2 and then with a need to accelarate (e.g. pulling out from a junction). It's like the feeling you get in a manual if you move off in 2nd rather than 1st - bit like clutch slippage. I've looked at some of the VW forums and have found a few references to this being a 'known problem' with the DSG7 box - these mainly relate to their 1.4 TSI and indicate it might be a clutch issue. Nothing comes up on google for Skoda with the 1.2 TSI so far though. So - just wondered whether those of you with the 1.2 TSI and DSG have experienced anything similar? Mine is a Sept 2010 with around 22K miles on clock. Cheers
  10. I've just experienced the same problem with my Fabia today - first thing was stalling as I was about to pull out in front of a slow bus (the bus driver was kind and didn't drive over me as I coasted to a stop with my hazards on). I stopped, turned off and everything was fine again. However, later in the same journey I had the EPC light on and warning in MaxiDot whilst the car went into limp mode. I called Skoda Assist and after plugging in to the laptop the fault was diagnosed as the shim required on the turbo actuator. Same TPI as on SJRT's helpful post back in December. Have car booked in to dealers on Monday ("never heard of that problem before squire....") - so will go armed with Skoda Assist report and a few print-outs from Briskoda - hopefully get the DSG update at the same time.... I'm glad I keep reading all the posts on this site as at least I had some idea what was going on as soon as the diagnosis came up. SJRT - were there any issues getting the shim? - the Skoda Assist man seemed to think they might be in short supply.... Car is Sept 2010 and has around 18K miles on clock...seems to fit with others' that have experienced similar problems.
  11. I have also noticed a similar noise - I have the estate (Combi) version. I too notice this mostly when at low speed and first noticed it when reversing. I'm now pretty sure that the noise comes from the rear seat backs rattling slightly against the metal brackets they clip back into. I did experiment by driving with the seat backs down and the noise seemed to disappear. I think someone previously posted that they fixed this with some tape around the brackets..... I haven't yet got around to trying this 'fix' but will have a go this weekend and let you know how I get on. So - not certain this is the solution but might be worth a try?
  12. Thanks for the replies - I will give the dealer a call.
  13. I am taking the Fabia to France soon and want to put some beam deflectors on the headlamps. I had a quick check of the manual and for the standard (halogen) lights it recommends contacting the dealer for information on how to do this. On my previous cars I have used the usual universal stick-on deflectors that you can buy at Halfords - I just wondered if anyone else has had to do this recently and can offer any advice on the best product? I'm asking because a quick google search highlighted a comment against the product on the Halfords website from a Fabia owner asking for advice on how to fit to a >07 Fabia - as the included instructions didn't cover the model. Thanks
  14. I posted this last year in response to a similar question. Might help: I have the MDI and ipod cable on my elegance - this has the Swing stereo - I'm not sure if this is what you have in the vRS, but I'm guessing it's a similar set-up. I docked my ipod to my PC and then connected to the MDI. Like you inidcate it seems to head straight to 'SONGS'. From there you need to press the INFO button so that you can see details such as 'BROWSE' and 'TRACK 01' on the display - rather than the track name. Press BROWSE You should now see TOP, UP, etc If you press TOP it should go to the root directory of the ipod. From here you can use the arrow (or forward button) to toggle thru the folders: PLAYLISTS, ALBUMS, ARTISTS, etc.... When you get the one you want select OPEN or PLAY ALL - e.g. OPEN might get you into an artist's folder (if you chose ARTISTS) and then you can toggle thru their albums and select PLAY when you get to the one you want. I hope this helps - it might not be 100% accurate (it's from memory), but should give a good idea of what to do. One tip - don't try it when on the move - it can be pretty distracting until you get the hang of navigating the menus! Cheers
  15. Thanks Estate Man - a top answer as usual.
