  1. Ahh !! Maybe that I just assumed like in 'Auto' on the Mk 2 that the fan level showed up, and it being summer until now I've just never noticed it before. Funny because I thought it did show on the central heater dial. I'll need to go back and re-try my pevious experiment of turning up the heating demand temperature making sure the engine is properly warm and see if the fan does become more active. I'm not sure that the engine was properly warm when I tried that previously Questions - 1 What is VCDS and how do you use it to enable the lights? 2 How does one adjust the fan characteristics that Gregoir mentions ? Many thanks for your replies, guys. Rob
  2. SE Technology TDI estate 67 plate. Problem - I've suddenly noticed that the the heater fan does not appear to be working on Auto; OK if I switch to manual so it's not the fan motor. Comment - I've had the car since June and I'm wondering if I am missing something or have pressed something that has turned the fan off in Auto. Any help appreciated Thanks Rob
  3. Many thanks, guys. Looks as though there are several options that work - I like the VHB double sided tape I've come across that I suspect is the stuff for number plates. Rob
  4. I found a thread on this topic back in 2012. Like mine the author found that the black paint on the back of the silvering had all just peeled off - fortunately there is enough warning when the glass begins to wobble to avoid loosing the mirror all together. The thread reported that the author had repainted the back of the mirror and used number plate double sided tape to stick it back on. Unfortunately he doesn't mention the type of paint which I would have thought might be something special for glass. It could also be that the paint isn't necessary. Any guidance please. Many thanks Rob (07 plate TDI estate)
  5. Thanks Adamal - "Its a common problem, easily rectified,". I take encouragement from those few words - it's the 'easily rectified' that worries me though !!!! The ones on the right hand stem are occasionally a bit unwilling so I suspect now that's the same problem. Again thanks Rob
  6. My apologies for jumping into this thread, but I suspect that maybe I've got something of a fault with this Column Controller too. Saturday driving to Perth from Edinburgh - cruise control to the Forth Bridge, switched off going over and then it failed to come back on afterwards. Two stops after that and it still wouldn't come on. Monday still not there, but this morning (Tuesday) it was back again and working fully. Glitch or something more sinister ? Rob
  7. I did a search and found this thread on the first problem I've had with my 3 yr old 2nd user Octy. It may well be the wrong type of fluid I've used though what's been going in since the winter has been very dilute. Any way I'm all for following up the suggestion that this contributor made about cleaning the jets out, but how does one get them off the car; or equally someone suggests new jets aren't that expensive, but again .... how do you get them out? Thanks - Rob
  8. It's the fact that it is so engine rpm specific that is puzzling. It lasts barely 50rpm and then it's gone only to re-appear just that bit further up the rev. range. It has changed slightly too in that at one point it was 1200 and then 1500revs, now the first appearance is 1000 revs. I've got just over a fortnight till the 3 months warranty is up and would like to get some idea before I go rattling cages. From the lack of response I'm now guessing that this isn't a Octy 2 'feature'. Rob
  9. I've a 07 plate Elegance estate, 40k, and in my possession for 2 months. It has a whine which occurs for a brief rev range around 1000 revs and again around 1500 revs when the engine is cold - the amplitude isn't loud and is in the engine, not the drive train. It doesn't seem really possible to locate it under the bonnet. As the engine warms up the amplitude drops till it isn't apparent. But I only need to have the engine off for a small time for it to reappear when the car is run again. Any ideas ? Rob
  10. I haven't been to enquire anywhere yet but I would like to have a towbar fitted to my 07 plate. The handbook shows a swan neck type fitting - is this the only type available ? I would prefer what I would call the old fashioned style of a separate ball fitting as I have two cycle carriers that will only work with that type of ball. Rob I don't know if it makes a difference, but it's the diesel estate version.
  11. Having just recently moved up from a Mk1 estate to a pre FL Elegance estate(and how long did it take me find out what 'FL' stood for !!), one of the things I'm finding is that the rear door gets very much dirtier than the Mk1's did. Does this spoiler help that at all, or is purely cosmetic ? Rob
  12. I got an '07 plate Elegance diesel estate just under 2 months ago and find that the fuel consumption is noticeably worse than the X registered Ambience estate diesel I traded in for it. This is worse on average by as much as 10%, and I haven't changed my driving style !! And yes I've checked the tyre pressures and I use 6th gear. Is this a measurement anomaly in that the Mk 1 was calculating high (typically 50mpg +, and approaching 60 on long runs) and the Mk2 displays low (at least 5mpg down on these figures), or is there possibly something wrong that I need to get looked at before the warranty runs out. There is nothing to indicate poor performance. Rob
  13. Very Many Thanks, Silver1011 - that's one of those OOPS! moments, as I hadn't thought of looking in the Owner's Manual (actually the Radio Manual does indicate a CD Player Manual so I will claim that as an excuse!) ; in the end it would have been reasonably obvious, and trial and error would no doubt have prevailed, but not in the present cold. Thanks for the link to the Manual too as having access to it on line does give one an electronically searchable document. Thanks to all who helped as well. Rob
  14. Having seen the CD query of a day or so ago, I am reminded that the 57 plate Elegance I recently bought has a CD Changer in the boot but there are no instruction in the folder of handbooks (the radio handbook does say there should be one!). I can't see any manufacturer's badge on the Changer so I have to assume that it is a factory fitted device - unlike the one in the Octy I had, this doesn't appear to have a carrier that one could load up in-doors which was such a good feature at this time of year !! Anyway does anyone know if the instructions are on line for loading CD's into this or can some one give me a brief summary please. Rob
  15. Many thanks, guys, for all your help. Somewhere I found heated washer nozzles in the handbook last night - tonight of course I can't find the reference; similarly earlier this evening I found ASR in the book , but now can't !! But you've all helped and that's great. Raglitts and Eccleshill - thanks for the pointer to the label and the decode data; the label also appears in the front of the Service Schedule book by the way. I has told me that I have a CD changer which I didn't know and headlamp washers which might exist behind some sort of plate on the front bumper - further exploration tomorrow. Interesting the point about the wipers and the bonnet as I took a close look earlier at the possibility if the mangling mentioned and came to the conclusion it would only occur if someone folder the wipers out - if the bonnet was that close to the windscreen when up then any wind gust would blow it against the windscreen. I will assume for the moment that the pump is just frozen - with -12C here tonight that's pretty likely. by the way it took me a moment or two to get the play on words on HID - well spotted. Cheers, thanks and a good Christmas to you all. Rob
  16. Newbie? - well I've moved up in the Skoda world. The old Octy I has gone, probably to the auctions and I'm now being told by HID to make sure I look after the 'sort of new' (actually 3 years old) one properly !! It's nice - I've gone from an Ambiente estate 1.9 tdi to the equivalent Elegance model (57 plate). 8 years difference and a bit more pampering and as said, it's nice. I will have to get used to it being that bit quieter and smoother .. and more ooomf otherwise plod will be after me. Anyway - questions 1 How do I tell which starred items in the handbook I have ? Some are obvious but it would have been nice to have had the heated windscreen washer nozzles for instance and I'm only guessing I haven't as I'm not getting any wash. 2 The handbook shows a row of switches below the Climatronic controls - only the right hand one of the 5 is active and is marked "ASR Off", and inevitably I can't find anything about this in the Handbook. Anyone help on that please ? 3 Coming back to the windscreen wash; on the old Octy you could hear the pump running for this, but I can't hear the pump on this one, so I checked under the bonnet that there was fluid OK, but then tried the wipers and hence the pump again ! So how does one fool the bonnet up system to allow the wipers to work then? (that's a bit like the electronics in planes which senses 'Wheels Up'! - I used to work on aircraft electronics) 4 There's an "AUX-in" socket in the front seat arm rest for an MP3 player which is referenced in "Technical Changes 05.2006" but I can't find where it says what type of connector it is - anyone help on that one please. OK 4 is all I can think of for the moment - no doubt time will find some more. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to being able to drive at more than 30 mph, however good that is for the fuel consumption ! Cheers Rob
  17. Follow up to my query and answers. The vehicle handbook indicates that the bleeps I was looking for are the seat belt reminder - in my age of vehicle this is just a reminder, it is not linked to the safety belt clip; ie if I plug the belt in before truning on the ignition, the 6 secs worth of bleeps still occur. Anyway - the reason for the follow up, is that magically this morning, a week after collecting the car from the repair shop, the bleeps have returned !! . Don't ask me why but it is a bit odd all together. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. If you want to carry the thread on, then come up with an explanation for the recovery !. Rob
  18. Those two answers then initiate the question - if there are no faults then there should be no beeps at all when you operate the ignition switch ? Could it be then that this was a fault code from something from the previous owner that had not been cancelled and I've just assumed for 8 years that it was part of the vehicle design ? Doh !!! The incident in the car park was that I caught the front bumper over over one of those wooden bar systems that they so often surround country park car-parks with. so there was no impact just a minor bang and bits of bumper coming into view as I reversed out. It was during the garage repair that these bleeps disappeared, and I've been back to complain about my missing bleeps !! Thanks for answering, guys Rob
  19. X reg 1.9TDI Octavia estate. I bought this at in 2002 and it has always given a regular set of beeps for about 10 secs when the ignition switch is initially turned on to the glow plug position. I Always have taken this to be a reminder to fasten your seat belt, but it was also convenient in the colder weather as a time measure before firing the engine up. Anyway I had a an argument with a fixed object and pulled the front bumper off. The garage has fixed that, but the beeps have gone away!!! . I've been back to discuss it with them (this is an accident repair shop rather than a Skoda agent) and they are a bit mystified as they state they wouldn't have disconnected the battery for a bumper replacement, but then the clock was all wrong when I got it back. Their suggestion is that a door was left open at some point and the battery had run down and they then had to recharge it. OK, that's plausible (and the owner seemed pretty genuine), but then why have the beeps gone and should they be there anyway? -- has some long term fault signal been cleared? Many thanks for any suggestions Rob
  20. Thanks Guys - I think the fuel pump relay would effect normal running as well (erratically). The air leak allowing fuel to run back into the tank is the most likely as the poor starting is from cold and from warm after a 30 minute gap or so. I wasn't aware of the fuel filter O ring - do I take it that that has to be purchased as a separate item ? In a 10 year old car that does sound like a distinct possibility and a fully justified replacement. Rob
  21. Thanks for the vaseline tip - hadn't thought of that one. Rob
  22. My local garage is trying to locate why my 1.9TD is taking so long to start, both hot and cold. They've checked the heater plugs and everything is OK there so they are suspicious that there is a fuel problem. They are asking if there is a prime pump in the tank . Can anyone help on that please. Thanks Rob
  23. Yes well clearly not, but that's what it seems a bit like ! At low throttle opening and light acceleration, the engine surges up and down a bit and every so often doesn't respond at all until I kick the throttle down a little. Any suggestions please. It's a 1999 estate with 70k on the clock. Rob
  24. Sorry Neil, you're wrong - maybe that's what you think should happen but in fact it didn't. I worked with the garage on this one and both drove the car with the 'wrong' cylinders' in, and then was there when the brakes were dismantled for investigation, and it was quite clear that no movement in the rear cylinders occurred until the brake pedal was half way depressed. It is apparently a known problem and changing to the 'automatic' cylinders removed the problem. I wouldn't have posted the story unless a) it was true and confirmed, and it might have relevance to other Octavia users. Rob
  25. Just to add my penny worth for all it is worth! Bog standard 1.9TDi Estate - front disks and pads were replaced in the summer and I didn't notice a specific difference, apart from getting rid of a shudder on light braking. A month ago the hand brake started failing (70K miles ) and the garage had to replace both cylinders because they were leaking. Now there was a problem because for some reason my machine is fitted with the cylinders for an automatic which are different slightly in length so when 'ordinary' cylinders were fitted the brake pedal went half way to the floor before anything happened ( anybody else met this one ?). Anyway the net outcome was that all the bleeding resulted in a change in the fluid and what a difference - might be due to having rear brakes that work but I suspect the change in working fluid was the main contributor.
