  1. Give it a blimmin good tug and it does pop off. I recently did this to cure a rattle i was getting between the cover gaitor and the lower console. Dave
  2. Throwing a spanner in, but does the grille really look better painted body colour rather than chrome? suppose its a taste thing but seems a fair expense to not necessarily improve the looks over standard..............yep........maybe iam finally getting old!! :-)
  3. Think its been mentioned already, but in truth it does sound like the crank position sensor as heat affects them when they are on the way out. (cold all ok, warm hot: running issues + non start) hope this helps.
  4. Kwik Fit quoted our admin girl £400 to replace the rear shoes on her Peugeot 306!!!! as apparently they were in sufficient.....turned out they needed adjusting up and the handbrake cable tightening....cost from my students....naff all.
  5. The new grille is far better than the old one(looked a bit naff to me). A nicely executed job with the carbon fibre.
  6. unfortunately it is that old saying of how long is a piece of string! It will vary on the quality of the parts fitted and the labour cost of the fitting centre. Maybe at a guess, between £250 and £500ish......best to get a couple of quotes.
  7. Errr how do I put it?...........yes you are i'm afraid :-) Sorry couldn't help myself...been a long day!
  8. The discs HAVE to be replaced as axle pairs, along with new pads so that they can bed in as an entity.
  9. I would be absolutely certain that it is the sensor as you could be wasting your money. A cheap (free) tip to try first (may or may not work but being free whats the harm!) Disconnect and remove the battery negative terminal (make sure you know your radio code etc) Unbolt the other end of the negative terminal where it meets the bulkhead (it should only be a few inches long) Clean/sandpaper or whatever the metal terminal ends and the battery negative post itself. Clean the positive battery terminal and post as well whilst you are at it. Refit, and see if the power steering light goes out. (some people buy a new earth lead to the battery for about £10) but being tight I did the above and now the electric steering pump gets the full current it requires!.
  10. I'll check tomorrow, thanks for the tip. Regards Dave
  11. Thanks, Irony is I teach (and currently am on this topic) motor vehicle students how to diagnose faults and to look at the obvious things first like fuses, but even I missed the hairline fracture. The brand new equipment we have just had delivered is from a company called called TEXA and that was the code it spat out. I think it should have been 00301. Interestingly the steering angle sensor fault it picked up turned out to be a dodgy earth lead, mind you, it's been a great car for the students to practice on, Different fault every week!
  12. Well knock me down with a feather!!!! Thankyou so much for you inadvertant help. I tapped in the error code 301 thinking it strange that you were unaware of the code and it led me back to this forum and a thread about a blown ABS feed fuse on top of the battery box. Using my phone torchey thingey in the dark I check my fuse 6 and it has a hairline crack in it ! . Off to the dealer tomorrow to get a replacement and hope it is a corroded weak fuse and not soething more sinister that blew it in first place. could be a few hundred quid saved though so thankyou once again. Thread reposted below Same fault code read using VAG-COM, same solution for Fabia 1.4 16V 2000 W reg! Awesome tips. Had been quoted ~500 for ABS Hydraulic Pump and ~500 for Control Unit and ~150 for labour by two Skoda dealers. Also this has possibly resolved a problem with the alarm going off at random - fingers crossed! (When I reconnected the battery with this new fuse in place it triggered the alarm but since then (<1 day) it has not given a false alarm, whereas usually this would be several times a day.) Got the replacement 40A strip fuse (for position 6 in battery fuse / junction box) from VW dealer (as used on Mk IV Golf) - cost = 2.50! Pics below. 13. Hi, The fault code is "Err Code 301" recovery pump
  14. Hi, Does anyone know a good place to get a replacement (used or refirb) ABS unit as my Recovery pump is Kaput! Do the codes (pump and ecu) have to be exact or can later models be used? i.e 6Q0 614 417D ....E.....F....ETC ETC
  15. I did originaly try to add all the countries, both left and right with individual populations but it didn't come out well on the posting so had to summarise. lol :p A good spot that the data is "side of road" and not "side of car". Perhaps a hole has been dug that I cannot dig myself out of! lol
  16. It was 11.24ish in the morning I believe the time on the post log states, perhaps you were looking at the original post to which I was replying to.
  17. Is it not really annoying when someone whom is very bored on a Friday morning forces data onto unsuspecting forum members about left/right driving countries and the percentage split ???? ohh that 'll be me then! :p :p :p LEFT-DRIVING COUNTRIES RIGHT-DRIVING COUNTRIES Population population Total 1,940,043,524 Total 3,824,348,286 34% (Left) 66% (Right)
  18. Without sounding too Victor Meldrew, but they are called "Budget" for a reason. Bear in mind that the tyres are the only point of contact with the road that you have. Is it therefore worth the risk of "potentially" compromising on performance over cost? Especially when there are branded products out there with proven quality for not a huge amount more money. Obviously it's your decision.
  19. Is it a 16V? If so then my engine light was coming on daily after switching it off and suggesting low EGR. I removed the EGR valve and it looked in good order so re-fitted it. I then removed the throttle body and where the EGR pipe enters the inlet manifold (seen vertically just under a fully opened throttle butterfly valve) i noticed that it was completely blocked stopping any flow of the gases back into the engine. Near the top of the pipe it has a, i'd say, 4mm hole running horizontally through it kinda like a chimney pot, clear this out and whilst the throttle body is off it would be best to clean it up and inside the manifold itself as it gets clogged with thick black sludge from both EGR and crankcase gases. Hope this helps cure one of the faults. Replace the battery Earth strap too as it is cheap and could cure the steering fault (it did mine after similar symptoms as yours)
  20. Brake fluid is Hygroscopic therefore absorbs the moisture in the atmosphere. Although not exactly perfectly air tight with the reservoir cap fitted, it does reduce the absorption somewhat. By leaving it off for that period of time I would advise renewing your brake fluid. In general a technician should use a fresh bottle of brake fluid everytime they do a fluid change because once the seal has been broken on the bottle the fluid will start to absorb moisture. Not so good if your car is the next booked in for a brake fluid change more than a few days later and the technician decides to finish the used bottle off first before fetching a fresh one from the parts dept. (food for thought!)
  21. Ok, so I am still having no luck with this and it's starting to do my head in. I have replaced the console bushes as they were torn with Cupra ones, but the wobble/judder is still there at any load in any appropriate gear between 45-60mph. When I lift off, all is smooth again. Has anyone had a similar problem with their Fabia (1.4 16v). I was thinking that perhaps it could be the longer drive shaft being out of balance and oscillating when under load at the aforementioned speeds. The dog bone mount seems solid enough.

  23. The EPC light can come on for quite a few different reasons, and the low battery output is a possibilty. A simple alternator test with a multimeter along with a few different voltage drop tests would give a basic diagnosis to potentially rule that out. The earth strap from the body to the negative terminal of the battery is another potential (and cheap to replace) problem as I found on my own Fabia (this caused my Electric power steering light to illuminate). Another is the brake light switch failing. Unfortunately there is no one fault that brings on the EPC light.
  24. Might be worth mentioning looking at the earth lead from the battery to the car body (only a few inches long) It can increase resistance over time which doesn't help the electrics much. Plus it's cheap and easy to replace. I had the same fault with my steering as you (with the pulsing noise and flickering headlamps), I replaced the steering angle sensor, but it didn't make much difference, once the earth strap was replaced it has been fine....."touch wood".
