hello fellas,i need some ideas or opinions on what is really going on with my octavia 1..and here it goes i started the car in a cold morning and i stepped on the accelerator while the gear is on neutral so the rev counter went up to about 3500 and then the engine suddenly died so i tried to start the engine but it wouldnt and i still tried about four times and on the fifth try it did start but it was like a different car, the engine was jolting and shaking and there was a lot of smoke coming out and when i tried to drive it away it had difficulty running as if the handbrake was lifted so i turned the engine off and waited for about 20 minutes,after that it ran better but not as good as when i first bought it..to those of you guys who had the same experience hope you can help me out and to those who has some thoughts on the matter any help is very much appreciated cheers!car is a 2003 octavia 1.9 tdi 110 110,00 mileage

ok got that,it still engages w/o problems apart from the reverse gear i have to wiggle it a bit to engage and disengage so from what you mentioned there are no problems with the cables and springs...so my main worry now is the locking lever coz it doesn't lock when i turn it upwards like what the guy did in the video it just keeps turning, will this cause any problems?thanks again guys..

ok gotta try it again sometime..so a broken gear linkage is not a big problem?what is the worst case scenario that is related to broken linkage?

i've tried that but there is no resistance in the lever,and is there any chances of gearbox failure because of broken linkage?thanks man..

hi everyone..a little help pls...my gear linkage is a mess it cant be adjusted anymore and the locking lever is broken,i say so coz when i try gear linkage adjustment the locking lever does not lock when i turn it facing upwards it just keep turning,should this be a worry?and is there any chance of the gearbox failing because of broken gear linkage?by the way the car is still driveable car still shifts w/o any horrible noises its a little bit hard to find the gears though..thanks guys for helping out..

hi to everyone..have a 1.9 tdi elegance estate octy 2001 asv engine..my question is does it have a hydraulic damper?if so where should i get one together with the complete cambelt parts cos its nearly due,im a bit confused on the places to get them as other people suggest different dealer names so just wanna settle it once and for all..and about the damper checked out the website vw spares and i saw a damper but it indicates that its for a 1.9 tdi pd atd 2001-2003..much appreciated if someone guides me with this pls..thanks guys..

alright thanks for that man..gaskette is better than sealant i guess..

thanks guys..when you say exercise or drive hard around what mark would my RPM be?and will it make any damage to the engine parts if limp mode always comes up?

hi to everyone just a quick one..my mk1 sometimes goes to limp modes when accelerating..my question is would it be alright if i just leave it like that for now?what would be the scenario if i chose not to have it fixed?cos what i do now is when limp mode hits i just stop by the roadside and restart the car..thanks to any ideas..

when im driving it hard and it reaches around 70 mph it jerks or hesitates and after that its like its just a normal diesel car no turbo boost,and i have to switch off the engine and turn it on again to make it ok,it now happens consistently anytime anywhere,the air mass meter was renewed by the way..thanks man for your reply..

hi to everyone,guess my turbo is done according to the mechanic,question is how much will it cost me to buy and let the mechanic refit it?and what is the cheapest i would expect?and to the guys who had the same problem what is the best solution to this problem?is rebuilding the turbo worth it?if so where can i have it?thanks for the ideas and advices..
