  1. Ah, you've driven my 370bhp/600Nm Saab turbo then? Actually, it's not that bad on grip, it's just that the torque/traction ratio is a little "entertaining"
  2. Cheers, I've now found Yeti Man's project thread. That's talking my kind of language - lol Excellent bit of work, and very, very tempting...
  3. Top project thread this (not that it needed saying again). I'm getting very tempted to take a similar route when the time comes to replace my Hirsch tweaked 302bhp/420Nm Saab 9-3 2.8T...loving that it's almost entirely bolt on part-bin mods, apart from the mapping
  4. Had a look at the Celtic website...hmm, interesting! I note that (like a lot of tuners) they quote their power increase on the basis of what a modded car achieves on their dyno vs the manufacturer's stock figures, whereas the actual gains against a stock car on their dyno are rather less. E.g. the 170 upgrade plot here: And the 140 plot here: Where both standard cars make a bit more than the Skoda quoted figures (especially the 170!). Nonetheless, decent hikes. I'm getting quite interested in this... One more question - if I don't bother getting the MIL's car and look for another Yeti, is the 1.8T worth a punt from a tuning perspective? It's such a shame that Skoda don't use any of the more modern VAG petrol turbos, like the 2.0TSi from the current Golf/A3/TT/Seat ranges.
  5. Thanks, guys. That's a bummer about the brakes. The Saab situation is much as you describe for 140-170 so I was hoping for a similarly simple swap. Is there anything else in the VAG parts bin that would offer a bolt on upgrade for the 110 I wonder? If it's just the turbo that's different on the 170 then I guess there's another easy bolt on upgrade...unless there is significantly different plumbing, or fuelling? If I were to go for this, the attraction is the known history of the MIL's car and its low mileage...less than 20K, with a good spec - it's the dark metallic beigey colour (Muscavado?) with tan leather, which I far prefer to the more common dark grey/black leather. On the other hand, the 170 4WD has lots of appeal given we live on a farm that's over a mile from the nearest public road Insurance not a problem, I'd just use an insurer who is mod friendly, have had to do that for years with my Saabs.
  6. My Mother in Law is trying to persuade me to buy her 2010 2.0 TDI 110 Elegance, a car that I talked her into buying about 4 years ago. I have to confess, I do really like the car, always have done, and in many ways it's the ideal family bus for us but for one aspect and that is simply that it's way too gutless for me - I'm used to mega horsepower and torque Saab turbos (my current daily driver is a 9-3 2.8T Aero with 300bhp and 420Nm...and the quickest thing in my current "toybox" is an ancient 9-5 Aero with 370bhp and a whopping 600Nm ) However, I am looking to swap the Saab soon and would be interested in a Yeti if I could get something close to the performance I am used to - torque being the key aspect for me. What have people been able to do with this 110 engine? I suspect if I were starting with the 140 or 170 I might stand a chance of getting decent grunt, but I know next to nothing about VAG diesels. What exactly is the difference between the 110/140 and 170 lumps? Is it just SW or do the turbos/injectors etc differ? I've seen a few reports on here favouring Shark Performance in Mansfield. Their website lists a stage 1 remap to 140bhp/350Nm and a "coming soon" stage 2 map with 175bhp and 400Nm. Anyone know if the stage 2 is just SW or is there any HW involved? Is there much scope for doing more while retaining reliability for 20K miles a year? I'm also interested in chassis upgrades to suit...I think the 110 FWD has the smaller brakes so presume there is an easy bolt on option to fit the 170 4x4 brakes - is it worth it? What about more trick stuff like Quaife diffs, are these available? Sorry, lots of questions from an eager noob...
  7. Many thanks for the quick response chaps I've used winter tyres on my cars for years so I'm more than sold on the benefits. I shall convince her to buy that set off the Bay of shiny temptations and order up some 205/60 16 Winters, as you say they're close enough the the original 17" tyre overall diameter... I may well be back next year when I start looking for a nearly new 170 4x4 with the beige leather trim (as I really don't like black leather...).
  8. Hi there - I'm new to Briskoda, you'll usually find me lurking on UKSaabs, Saabs being one of my passions in life, however I have a query about winters for a Yeti. My girlfriend's Mum recently bought a Yeti 2.0 TDI 110 Elegance FWD, on my recommendation. I've been really impressed with the car and I am seriously toying with one when the time comes to replace my daily driver, but that's another story. Janet lives in a rural part of North Yorkshire and at almost 80 years old relies on her car to get about. Her private drive is about 300 yards long and is currently under nearly a foot of snow, despite the local farmer clearing it for her a few days back. The Yeti on it's stock Dunlops just ain't up to getting her out. My low slung boy-racer (yes, really ) Saab 9-3 Aero on Nokian WR G2s had no problem getting up there, even though the front spoiler was doing a snow plough impression... So we (the GF and I) have convinced her to get some winter boots. Good call, I hear you say. The trick is, what to get... The current shortage of winters in the UK has put the prices to ludicrous levels, if she gets the 225/50 17s to sit on her stock alloys, they'll cost an arm and a leg locally, or she'll have to wait over a week for mytyres to deliver and still cost a few limbs. So I looked into using 16" steels instead, to save a few quid. I found one of the excellent technical guides on here and I understand a 5x112 PCD 6x16 ET50 rim with centre bore of 57mm is what she would need. 205/60 16 winters are almost half the cost of the 17s so that's a big boon. Her local Skoda dealer poo-pooed the whole idea, "it'll invalidate your warranty and insurance, madam", and all that sort of nonsense, but she has confirmed the recommendation with Skoda UK so I'm convinced. The local dealer is rapidly showing himself to be an idiot. Anyway, he's quoted her almost £300 for 4 steel rims which seems so far beyond steep it's unreal. So to eBay...I assume that any VW Group 5x112 ET50 rim would do, but not all of them have the centre bore listed. Can anyone confirm this for me please? I have found a good set HERE Would these do the job? All advice and guidance welcomed. Thanks a lot in advance...
