Cheers. Garage confirmed it was the bearing today. Aside from the console bushes, it's the only non-service schedule item I've had to replace since owning it from you. Perhaps I drive like a blouse to make it last so long.

I've got a standard 55 plate, 96k old vRS. I recently had the front tyres replaced, and the chap at my local centre said the tracking was out, and he promptly corrected it. For the last two days, I've been hearing a light grinding noise coming from the front left. It doesn't happen until I hit 30+mph, and does not occur when I'm driving left, but in a straight line is barely noticeable, when when turning right at speed, it becomes louder. It occurs if in gear, or neutral. My initial thought was wheel bearing. Does that sound about right? Car has no mods whatsoever. I've got a drive from Herts to Oxford and back on Saturday, but may not be able to get it looked at until after that - worried whether it's worth the risk for the drive.

And that run-around would eventually need a cambelt, big service, tyres. There's always the bus if you don't like the big bills.

Can anyone recommend a course that I could attend to enable me to learn 'simple' car maintenance. I'm not looking to rebuild a head, but I'd like oil/filter changes, ability to change brakes, simple stuff. Anyone been on one, or knows of someone who's attended a particular course who found it beneficial?

I'm not a million miles away from you, but got Unit18 to do mine. A fair drive [which has some alright roads ] away but I only use a bloke over the road for small bits, as I'm not aware of a good honest garage around the area.
