  1. Sorry, folks, but I have to raise this. First, the local dealer (Arnold Clark) have been awful. I was really bitten, especially with the 20% discount, where I thought the maths just worked... A kick-in-the-teeth for Arnold Clark here; if your salesman (Stuart) had even bothered to get off his arse and call me back, there would have been a sale. Anyways, casting the net a wee bit wider, I've come across the Jaguar XF. At list price, it's cheaper than the 3.6 Superb. And they can be pushed. So, sorry, all, but my time here seems to be limited. Do check out the XF, and do beware of a salesguy called Stuart...
  2. The other thing that occurs to me is that this is a good deal for people looking to buy today, but is a bit of a kick in the teeth for those who bought last year. Auto trader has a one year old v6 on at 26k which is more than you can buy a brand new one for, right now.
  3. Ok - but that plays into my thoughts. A 26k car after the 20% "vat" discount, minus 10%, is 23.4k which is probably my target. Thanks, also, for the advice re Internet sales; I'll definitely do that. Cheers Scott
  4. Look, folks, we move in our own worlds. In these worlds, every little facelift is another foot in the grave of the car we bought. Every improvement is a damning inditement on the folly that was our last purchase. The reality is that it is only the specialists (or the subscribers to these forums!) that can notice the difference. My current car is a BMW 5 series and I know only too well that one major, and two minor, facelifts have occurred since I bought it. Yer punter-in-the-street, however, still comes up to me and tells me how cool it is. So my advice would be to enjoy your car. You will *always* be able to sell it to someone who appreciates it. Of course, there is always the small matter of price...
  5. Hi all Apologies to those who bought a petrol superb prior to the current (allegedly vat free) offer but I wondered what you thought a reasonable price for a V6 would be. RRP for a base elegance (to which I'd add a bunch of extras) would be around 30,500 (3.6l estate). Drop the vat and we're around 25k. This is *not* a car that's going to be in huge demand on the second hand Market... So I'm thinking of going in with a floor of around £23k. What do you think? Do please bear in mind that with zero negotiation, I could walk out with a deal at £25k... Actually, I saw a 2010 3.6 on auto trader at £26k.. :-(
  6. Err - that could come across a tad w*ky. I meant that if we had any money... Anyways, I'm looking to ditch the 540 asap (any offers?) and I think that the Superb 3.6l is the answer!
  7. Well, first off, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond. There have actually been so many responses that I'm not sure where to start. So, if I was to pick a single "they said / we said" then I would go with RedDog and his quote, above. This seems to sum it up for me. I bought a £55k BMW 540i for £20k, six years ago. What to buy next?? I'm honestly not meaning to be patronising here, but the £25-30k Skoda Superb V6 does everything that my beemer did, and for (hopefully) less money. So, I'm pretty much sold. Wife is astonished - picked her up from Jr's friends 5-year-old birthday party and she said "what? sure! whatever you want..." which, let's be honest, would not have happened if I had been Porsche chasing...
  8. Hmmm... hadn't come across them. I was on buyacar.com and it came out at £25,100 (including a bunch of extras). Just plugged the same list into drivethedeal.com and it's £27,070. All food for thought, though!
  9. Thanks all - I see your point re the diesels, but it's hard to see past the 20% discount on the petrol models We're a one-car family, and my wife hates manuals, so it would definitely be the DSG!
  10. Hi all - first post, but hopefully many more to follow! I've had my current car, a 2001 540i (4.4l V8) for six years now and have spent the last couple of years wondering what to get next, that has similar oomph and all the goodies and luxuries. Oh, and that won't bankrupt me! So, yesterday I started at one end of Edinburgh's "car showroom boulevard" intending to gather a few models to shortlist, principally to go look for on the second hand market. Little did I suspect, when I started, that I would come away seriously considering a new Skoda! But that's what happened... A very nice gentleman asked me about my own car first, and then said "come in - I've got something that may well interest you", which turned out to be the Superb Elegance, with the 3.6l V6 (although they don't have that in the showroom). So, a good chat ensued and since then I've been perusing the Internet, looking at reviews, and trolling through these excellent forums and I can't believe what I'm seeing. Nobody has a bad word to say about it! The reviews are excellent (and compare it to Audi / BMW / Merc, rather than Mondeo and Passat) and even the questions on the forums seem mostly benign / positive (have a look at the woes on the BMW forums...). With the 20% discount (aka "no VAT") deal currently on offer, I could throw a few goodies in and have more or less the same car as my 540i, except ten years yonger, for around £26,000! So, is it really that good? Anyone else move from Merc, BMW or Audi? By the way, the MPG doesn't frighten me as I get 16.1MPG right now so anything has to be an improvement on that Only slight sticking point is that they can't see me getting anywhere near a V6 to test drive. Is anyone aware of a dealer that has one? I travel a lot and so the dealer doesn't need to be close by. Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers, Scott
