UPDATE: so my son and I started looking around the vaccuum tubes that lead from the N75 solenoid on the firewall we, put our hands down the back of the engine top left and reved engine we could feel air hitting our hands, so knew there was an air leak somewhere round there, but it was late on and getting dark, so my son took it to a local garage the morning after told the mechanic where we felt the air so they stuck it on a lift to look under neath, he spotted the problem within seconds....apparently the previous owner had taken the main air feed pipe off the turbo, but couldnt get it back on again so it was only half over the hole. the mechanic said theres a triagle clip or something that hiolds the pipe in place and its a bugger to get back on properly, he did it and secured the pipe, my son says its a different car, after he booted it up a hill he said it chucked a ****e load of black smoke out then nothing, pulls like a steam train no more loss of power or rattling sound (which we assume was the half open pipe vibrating when the turbo kicked in) we are still going to do the turbo clean with the mr muscle later on so he replaced the MAF sensor which was faulty - £57 from ECP and the mechanic charged him £10 for the job of putting the turbo pipe back on. all in all a good result.
  2. i think i've figured out where it is from google diagrams, it comes from the N75 solenoid i think and these are the pipes we were going to replace anyway so bonus

Hi can anyone tell me where the boost pipe is on octavia mark 1, 1.9 TDI if you can either describe it clearly or show me a diagram it would be great, as someone told my son he has a split boost puipe which is the cause of his engine problems im assuming its connected to the turbo in some way....
  4. LOL yeah the EGR was cleaned after removal, with carb cleaner and a toothbrush, and i have mild arthritis in myhands so the pumping of the water bottle did sieze them up a bit hee hee

Hi does anyone know what lengths and also diameter of vacuum tubing id need to replace the stock fabric covered tubing in an 2000 octavia 1.9 TDI, as i think my sons car has a vacuum leak somehwere and these old wore out tubes seem like the logical place to start replacements, It would be great if anyone has links to products also can anyone provide me with a diagram of the intercooler pipework and the most common place a vacuum leak could be there (as someone told my son the most likely place is behind the intercooler) and i dont know whether he meant the inter cooler or some vacuum pipes around it

I think the purpose of using water is the fact your engine is at running temp so as soon as it gets sucked in the water becomes steam and breaks the carbon deposits up and is eventualy spat out the exhaust with the carbon waste, and trust me there was plenty of carbon deposits on the road and leafs under the car
  7. that was the EGR valve, with the butterfly flap in it, yeah i couldnt shift the carbon at first, used a full can of carb cleaner on it to break it down as well as 2 cheap toothbrushes from poundland, worth it though to get into the harder places THis pic isnt my sons engine its a generic one off google the EGR valve and other main parts are in the same place

  9. done it and it worked fine,i video'd it chucked **** loads of smoke out, got pulled by coppers after cleaning the EGR valve and replacing it cos of carbon being chucked out lol, we explained what we were doing and they said get yourselves on the motorway and give it good blast lol. below are pics before and after of the EGR valve and the pipe that leads down to the manifold from it, caked thick with carbon after cleaning so we refitted the EGR valve an proceeded to warm the engine for the tap water decarbonizing by driving around the estate(thats where the police stopped us) we got back to his house and removed one end of the rubber hose that leads to the EGR valve and filled a spray bottle with around a pint of tap water my son put his foot on the gas to get it upto 2.5k revs, below is a vid of me spraying the water into the EGR hose until the water is all gone, there was loads and loads of white smoke with spurts of black smoke. The engine struggled a few times but i just held back a couple of sprays and it caught back up. its took a bit of time to render the vid and upload it to youtube, cos photobucket just wouldnt process it for some reason http://youtu.be/mL7RWPtbX8A RESULT My son says the car pulls better, and gets to higher speeds in each gear than it used to, im not sure what the mpg was before so i cant comment on that, so overall a positive result and a really easy fix for sluggish performance
  10. eric the car guy is quite reputable and he has a how to vid doing this we are still gonna do it today i'll try and video it on my phone, we are also gonna remove the EGR valve clean it and replace that first...wish us luck guys

I've been looking this up over the last 2 oe 3 days and it can be done for both diesel and petrol engines(different method for petrol engines), it looks pretty straight forward and there are quite a few how to video's on youtube showing how its done. Has anyone on here cleaned the carbon out of thier engine using this method and if so what result did you get, as my son and i are going to try it tomorrow to hopefully shift the gunk from the EGR pipes and the manifold, apparently it also gives your turbo a steam clean below is the link for doing it to a diesel engine Deisel

  13. so while i've been working the last few days my son took it upon himself to try and get some of the bits sorted, he bought and installed a new MAF and the result was.....well nothing the car is still chugging as much smoke out as a steam locomotive, so he took to his local garage and to see if it needed any codes wiping, the codes that came up were for MAF as expected, but also something to do with EGR valve wheich they told him was either gunked up and stuck in the open or closed position OR theres a split pipe around it. If atfer inspection we cant find a split pipe....how hard the EGR valves to remove and clean and what sort of time ascale are we looking at? thanks in advance
  14. thanks for info pav, we'll take a look at the wiring once the weather clears a bit, and @mbames its deffo not factory fitted as when he first got the car there was a manual switch which lights up bright blue when turned on (we thought it was an immobiliser when we first looked, but worked out later that this switch was to turn the 12v socket on/off in the boot

Hello my son recently bought the above octavia it has 125k on the clock and is in all round generally good condition regarding corrision and such, the question i have is what the common probs for 2000 plate car, the previous owner was disabled according to log book so im assuming it hasnt been hammered by some spotty youth around the estate. I been for a ride along and had a quick look over it under the bonnet and following is a short list of problems i noticed so any help with these would be great. (1) rear windows have stopped working, i think they are still getting power as im sure i can hear a humming when button depressed on one of the windows (2) inspecting the engine and noticed the plug for the MAF was hanging(unplugged) - son says since its been plugged back in theres a noise when car gets into high revs(just before gear change) sort of like a diesel engine sound but more of a rattle (3) when setting off or changing gear the cqar chucks out a plume of black smoke ( im hopeing its because it hasnt been thrashed and is just a build up of carbon) or maybe a faulty MAF (4) when i was stood at the drivers side after checking all the fuses, the engine was running and when he turned it off there was a hissing sound which became clear once noise from engine had gone then died out after about 3 to 5 seconds (6) and finally the reverse lights have stopped working (we have checked the fuses) all the other lights work ok, but i did notice the previous owner has installed a DIY 12v socket in the boot (probably to charge his disability scooter while in transit) im thinking maybe he's spliced into the reverse lighting cable or something so there it is in a nutshell i await your answers and recomendations so we can get to work, thanks
