  1. Can you post a link to their page, can't seem to find them. Also after disc and pad set, ideally rear but know I will need to change the fronts too in the nexr future. Had middle-of-the-road drilled discs with mintex high performance pads on front and rear for past 4 years. On the whole are drilled and or grooved discs better than standard smooth discs? Is it really worth the upgrade?
  2. Yeah he checked his receipt, even went to store aagin yestreday and got another printed receipt from them as he started to doubt himself, but sure enough diesel was purchased. Dealer has checked their message baord and knows of no known issues with regards fuelling in South Wales so I guess the contaminated fuel is a long shot. He's stilll gonna try to get a sample from his car though and get it tested, probably worth it in the grand scheme of things.
  3. Yeah that's a good idea, have suggested it. He's picking the car up from Sinclairs tomorrow and back to an independent garage to get the work done as it will come in around £1k cheaper but he's gonna phone them today to ask if they've kept the fuel to get it etsted. Could be a legitimate claim against Tesco if there proves to be more than just diesel in the fuel as he filled up there on Monday half hour prior to the car breaking down.
  4. Yeah, thats what I thought too and did check with him that he didn't put petrol in instead but he says he didn't and never has. Seems odd for it to take that long to cause problems, especially seen as there have been no issues until now. It was even in for a major service last week and nothing was noted then. Told him to check what they changed/replaced when in for a service as that might have triggered something.
  5. Had power steering light issues with my '56 VRS Tdi since last summer. What caused the issue is unknown but I first noticed it a few days after braking and turning on the wet cattle grid coming off M4 J36, Bridgend. Has fluctuated between amber warning light and full on red light since, the latter being quite dangerous as you lose power steering altogether whn light is red. Was scanned by my independent garage who couldn't looate the problem but when in for a service in October I told Sinclair Skoda Swansea, who scanned it also. They said it was a software update issue and nothing much to worry about but said if it happens again to let them know and they'd take another look. Over Christmas it went red when in a multi-storey car park in Cardiff, not easy trying to negotiate the turns without power-steering, but was fine on restarting the car afterwards, and it has gone amber twice in the last week whilst driving but has gone off itself without me havign to stop the car. Have changed the battery since Christmas so hopefully that might have been something to do with it but will get it scanned with Skoda when its next in for a service next month. Will post an update on here then.
  6. My work colleagues 2012 Fabia Monte Carlo Tdi broke down on the way into work on Monday, shortly after filling her up with diesel. It went into safe mode before coming to a halt and would turn over but just wouldn't start. Having experienced injector failure due to a bad batch on my Octavia VRS I said it sounded like a similar problem but Sinclair Skoda Swansea, who he had the car recovered to, came back to him the following day to say it was the fuel regulator valve. The part was changed but phoned him yesterday morning to say they have had problems starting the car but would investigate further and let him know. They have phoned him this morning now to say that it appears that the car was once filled with petrol instead of diesel and this has caused all sort of problems, which means, amongst other things a new set of injectors. They have told him to come in for a chat as they've estimated a reapir bill in excess of £3000. He's contacted City Skoda where he purchased the car from approx. 12 onths ago and is awaiting a phone call from them. Has anyone else suffered similar woes or got any suggestions other than taking it to an independent garage for a second/cheaper opinion? Cheers
  7. Yeah does seem well worth the price so might take the plunge, can only be a good thing! Not sure how much on top fitting would be but would like to think I'd get it all done for under £600. Would be my preferred option and will find out some prices, but can't really afford to have the car off the road due to the distance I travel for work (85 mile round-trip 5 days a week).
  8. Driving in fear of my turbo going pop any time soon (tell tale signs are there) I have been searching the net looking at prices for replacements, either new or remanufactured. Have heard good and bad stories about various places, so going on past good experiences (and limited budget) I am tempted to go with this offer from Eurocarparts for a VW remanfactured G-force Garrett unit with fitting kit and 1 year warranty: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_2.0_2007/p/car-parts/engine-parts/turbos/turbocharger/?719441461&1&92cf565fcbd6afeb8dcc3a61cb58ea0da926cf88&000352 Not only is it a decent price, around £600, but being a previous customer they have offered me a 25% off next purchase code to use too, which brings the price down to under £450. Most too good to be true things usually are but this seems like too good a bargain to miss..... I'm open to all feedback and opinions, both good and bad, so the floor is open for you to have your say.
  9. Very useful link that, cheers. Know it's a long shot, but don't suppose there's an english/uk equivalent is there??
  10. Flashing light and limp mode on way into work again this morning, 2nd time in a month. Pulled over, turned off engine for couple of minutes restarted and away to go with no further issues. Know something is not right though: Seems to not be pulling as well as it did a couple of months ago, with noticable flat spots, plus also noticed a significant decrease in economy. Switched jobs in August so doing an extra 50 or motorway miles a day and until mid/end of December have been getting 540-560 miles out of a tank with sensible driving. Since the the start o fthe year though and certainly the first flashing glowplug light issue, I have had the DPF light on regularly (which does clear after 10-15 mins on the M4) and am struggling to get 500 miles out a tank.
  11. Had the flashing glowplug light this morning too on way to work, with car going into limp mode just after joining the M4. As I have to travel 40 miles to work I decided to take it to Sinclair Skoda (SS) in Swansea as they open at 8am. Halfway there the DPF light comes on too. SS were good enough to look at the car and their diagnostic came up with a turbo issue. They cleared the fault as they couldn't find any obvious probs and told me that a 'spirited' drive in 5th would clear the DPF. If it came on again they said to come back and they'd look at it properly. SS didn't charge me a penny for looking at and clearing the faults, which was nice! Sure enough the car was performing ok back on the M4 but it took nearly 15 miles in 5th and 2500+ revs to for the DPF light to go out, which is slightly worrying and leaves me guessing the DPF must have been quite blocked to take that long to clear. Hoping that the problem, if it returns, is only the exhaust pressure sensor as with having to replace the engine (and numerous associated bits and pieces) on the car in 2013, and the injectors, following a failure, in 2011 (this was done courtesy of Skoda UK fortunately), I seem to be haemorrhaging money to the car since purchasing it, which is a shame as it's a fantastic car to drive and own.
  12. Further to the topic regarding the remap figures for the 2.0 TDi CR170, I was wondering what returns people have had having had their 2.0 TDi PD170 remapped? I'm on the verge of getting mine done (just building up the funds again after having to replace the engine due to #4 shell bearing throwing a hissy fit), and have been quoted various figures from a number of companies: 195 to 210bhp and 295 to 325lbft, with prices varying from £285 (done outside the house) to £600 (this includes rolling road before and after read outs). Any info would be great. Cheers James
  13. Head been taken off and contrary to initial assesment its not dropped a valve after all and its bottom end knock so an even more expensive job - like to run to about £1800+ with complete strip, re-boring/grinding required plus replacement gaskets, pistons, etc Managed to source a replacement, younger engine ('09) with less than 30k miles for £1200 so only the cost of labour, and new water pump & timing belt to add so hopefully all done for around the £1600 mark..... fingers crossed anyway. Was concerned with my car being an '06 PD engine and the new 1 being an '09 possibly CR type (engine code matches (BMN) so all should be ok) but spoken to Sinclair Skoda's chief mechanic and apart from the injetcors potentially needing adapting to suit the car all should be fine, and he said that if the engine has come from a running car then there shouldn't even be that issue to deal with. Will update this topic when I know more. James
  14. Driving into work this morning and my '56 VRS TDi's engine gave up the ghost, or at least decided I'm going to have to dig deep to get it repaired. Driving along the M4, cruising about 70 in 6th and when I went to accelerate I started to feel a vibration through the steering wheel. Thought it might be a wheel bearing initially but the vibration was general and not specific to one side. Eased off but continued and a mile or so further up the road I could hear a tapping type sound coming from the engine bay. I turned off the radio and listened and sounds varied, either like a belt was on its way out/snapped or something tapping against the block. The car was also starting to lose power and the vibration getting slightly worse. Fortunately the last mile on the motorway was down hill so I free-wheeled but still had the tapping noise, which was now more audible and only quiet when the clutch was depressed. When I came off the motorway and to a stop at the traffic lights the car started juddering with the tapping getting louder, then it cut out. I tried re-starting it and it turned over slowly before firing then cutting out. I tried again, as the lights went to green, and, although slow, it fired so I was able to move away but the tapping was quite loud by this point and completely down on power. I managed to limp the car firstly to work to phone my breakdown assistance and then to the local Skoda dealer (500yds down the road). Without taking the plugs out and getting a camera down inside the engine they weren't able to tell me a exactly what was wrong but they said its sounds like its dropped a valve, at best. Asked them for estimated price and they said around £1000 plus VAT if its only dropped a valve as its head off, skimmed, new valves, timing belt, etc. Once I got up off the floor I drove it back to work, where it’s been recovered from, and spoke to my local garage (where it’s been recovered to) but after speaking to the owner even he reckons I'm looking at around £800 +VAT cos, as the dealer said, its new valves, head skimmed, new timing belt kit, etc. He's gonna take a look at the car when its gets to him this afternoon and will give me a better idea of the repair price but either way it’s not good. I've owned the car almost 2 years and it’s done around 131k miles (it had done 112k went I bought it). It’s always been serviced at main dealer, had the timing belt done at about 82k miles and in August 2011 had the injectors replaced due to failure. Other than the DPF light coming on now and again, I've not had any problems with it. With that in mind, got a few conundrums: Firstly, anyone suffered similar and what price did it cost you to get done? Secondly, and obviously depending on price, is it cheaper / easier to get a recon engine instead of getting it repaired? And finally, if I was to replace the engine, how much hassle / is it possible to replace the PD engine with the CR engine instead? Long shot the last one I know but though I'd ask. Any responses would be welcome. Thanks James
  15. Cheers for the information John, much appreciated. I have also had a quote from GotBoost Performance in Bridgend. They've quoted £499 +VAT for full an ECU remap with before and after dyno testing and diagnostics, plus DPF removal, including removing and gutting the original DPF, rewelding and refitting. This is a Stage 1 remap and they expect to achieve approx 35bhp and 45 lbsft of torque. If the car was a DSG then they could get better figures but its a 2006 PD engined version so I don't think I can get better figures. I'll look into the 2 tuning boxes that you mention.
