  1. I'll add an update to this thread. I also installed DSK-165s into the front (so far) of my Fabia, and had the same muffled sound like they were under water. After swapping one of the speakers with one from the pair waiting to go in the back with no improvement, I did some pressing of panels and realised the problem was the door panel pressing on the cone, so stopping it moving. The reason is the DSKs sit on top of the door adaptors that you have to use, whereas the stock ones are mounting inside the stock adaptor. As a temporary fix I've cut 2 rings of Dynamat to go round the edge of each speaker and cut away the plastic ribs on the inside of the panels, and the speakers now work brilliantly. When I get half a day I'll make some wooden door adaptors about 8mm shallower than the Autoleads plastic ones. Now to fit the rears!
  2. I have a 2008 1.9PD TDi Fabia Sport. I don't want to spend a fortune or try to turn the car into a drag racer, but would like to improve a couple of things. But, I have a few questions and would welcome any comments... Suspension - I'd like to improve the road holding but I don't want the car to feel like it has solid wheels, and whatever I do needs to consider the fact that our roads are falling apart so I don't want to be shaken about until my teeth rattle. I've read that the Fabia Sport has lowered or sport suspension, but the ride height looks to my Skoda-inexperienced eye (this is my first, and I've only had it for a few weeks) to be the same as the non-Sport version. Should I be thinking about lowering, different springs, both, or what? Tuning - I'd like a bit more oomph and flexibility, but I don't want to either damage my engine or loose fuel economy (I know that if I tune it then drive with the pedal down all the way I will!). What are the options for tuning the 1.9PD engine. By experience, what impact does suspension and engine tuning on this car have on insurance? I live near Aylesbury in Bucks...does anyone know any suspension/engine tuners not a million miles from here?
  3. Actually I think the Fabia lights are far batter than the ones on my bike! The Tiger had the worst headlights I've ever seen...how Triumph ever got type approval is a mystery, and criminal really on the part of the DoT inspectors IMHO. Riding over 40mph on a dark unlit road is dangerous, especially on right bends where you're riding into darkness because of the beam cut off and the bike leaning over. It's because of the cut off plate in the dipped beam (left unit). I changed to HIDs so now get much more light on the road, but the same cut off. The answer was auxilliary LED lights - not running lights but proper lights that through masses of light forward onto the road - not cheap and a hassle to get from the USA, but worth the money...
  4. and there was me last night trying to find dual filament lamps on the interweb!
  5. That's the same as bikes then! I may have a word with the MOT tester I use before I spend any dosh though, just to be sure! I thought this, but didn't have time to take the lamp out to look...doh! OK, so what happens with HIDs for high/low beam?

  7. Can you tell me which speakers you used as I want to change mine (I only just got the car but need to put some decent speaker in soon!)? What's that VW adaptor you talked about, and also what is Dynamat (sorry, I've been away from any sort of car modding for donkeys years!!!). Last questions...what JVC unit do you have (might think about changing the whole shebang later!) Cheers
  8. Can I ask a couple of [probably] dumb questions!? First off, I'm used to 2 separate lamps for low and high beam...can someone explain how the system works with just 1 lamp? Is voltage restricted for low beam, then full for high beam, or what? (Told you it was a silly question!). Next, what are the recommendations for brighter/whiter halogen lamps as I think the standard ones are pretty dull. I've used Osram Nightbreakers before but they don't seem to have very good life span. I have HID conversions in my bike but I'm wary of going this route in the car...bike MOT testers are far more sensible than car ones so HIDs don't normally cause an issue, but I'd expect a fail in the car due to lack of self-levelling and headlamp washing. Cheers, Nige
  9. Hi all, Nige here from Cheddington, UK! Finally got shot of my CMAX auto petrol and picked up my 2008 Fabia 1.9TDI Sport yesterday. I was very happy to see 48mpg on the computer on the way home instead of 26-28mpg I've been used to getting from the Ford. As I use a bike (Triumph Tiger 1050) for work 8-9 months of the year so it's only weekends and winter that I need to try to squeeze family, and luggage for holidays, into the car...I think I'll be buying a roof boot in a while! Now off to fit the Parrot car kit... Cheers, Nige
