  1. No Chris, it accelerates fine most of the time, only happens when I accelerate hard around 3000rpm. Then it just looses power an goes into limp mode. Cheers Lofty, I'll unplug the MAF and give it a go an if its no different then I'll give your oven cleaning procedure a go. Only thing is, what does the MAF look like and where is it?
  2. hi guys, finally had the computer scanned and no fault codes came up!! Everytime I get this loss of power the car I assume goes into some sort of limp mode as it is extremely slow accelerating for the rest of the journey until you turn the engine off, then its back to normal. I thought as this happens there would be a fault code but apparently not. So I suppose its unplugging the MAF then and seeing what happens. So, Where is the MAF and what does it look like??
  3. cheers Phil, I'll look at that after checking for obvious hose/pipe leaks. Someone said to me today that the mass air flow valve could be the problem so thats 2 votes for that
  4. Hi Oet, I'll have a look, which pipework though? Basically just anything into the turbo?
  5. Thanks for the help guys, it was just the track rods and not the steering rack, thank god! I couldnt do it myself in the end as access was bad with a sub frame lying directly under the inner end and with no special tool or anything else that I could get in there with the car on axel stands I had to take it to a man with a ramp. He charged me £95 and then I got the allignment done for £25 at halfords autocentre so not bad really. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help
  6. Hi guys, I'm after a bit of help with my octavia 1.9 tdi. Everything seems fine most of the time but more regulary now when accelerating, I think its only when revs are increasing to around the 3000 mark it seems to loose power. So basically it seems like the turbo just stops working and from then on there is no acceleration from any speed/revs and the car is really slow. Then the next time I drive it it seems to be ok. Like I said though this seems to be happening more often now. Does anyone know a common simple little issue this could be or am I looking at a new turbo? I remember seeing in the history that the turbo has been changed so hoping that its ok Thanks for any help
  7. thanks guys, i really appreciate the help. I will have another look, this time under the gaiter whilst someone wobbles the wheel for me. I should be able to change them myself and then find somewhere to do the wheel allignment. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on
  8. Cheers Ken and Manny, looking for parts now incase I need them ( I hope I will as will be much cheaper than a steering rack change! ) Do you mean the threaded rod which screws into the steering rack? If so, what can cause movement in them? I hope your right though as their around a tenner each so from the heart ache I was feeling this morning about having to change the steering rack I'm now feeling much happier!
  9. Hi all, I need some advice as I've just discovered what has probably been causing the juddering through the front wheels to the steering wheel on my 2001, 1.9tdi octavia. Initially the wheels juddered when braking at fast speeds but has gradually over a couple of weeks started to judder when turning at high speeds (changing lanes on a motorway). The initial thought like most people would probably think was warped discs or possibly loosing a wheel ballance weight although more likely to be discs as I'm sure it started when braking. So before going out and buying discs and pads I thought I'd jack it up and have a look for any obvious problems as the allignment is clearly out due to my 6 month old dunlops wearing unevenly and down to the limit, the juddering obviously doesnt help either. When the car was off the ground I straight away found excessive play from side to side on each wheel. It really is bad. You can see the track rods moving into the steering rack gaiter a good inch when pushing the wheel back ond fo. Has anyone had this problem before? Could it be play where the track arms meet the rack or due to it being both sides with what seems like the same amount of play is it more likely to be the rack itself? Also is the rack electrically operated or hydraulic as reading some threads on here I'm not sure. I havent got the cash to send it to a garage to figure it out so was hoping to diagnose it myself but have little time as my wife now drives the car, often with the kids in it so I'm not letting her drive it as it is, so am down to 1 car with us both needing a car for work! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers, Chris
  10. I hopefully have closure on this problem. After another week of starting first time every time, the same not starting problem returned in the gym car park. This time as I was not outside the house I rang the AA and when he arrived with a bit of know how and the right kit he worked out that there was infact an increase in voltage at the starter connection when the key was turned showing that everything from the ignition barrell to the starter was working and therefor it must be the starter. After a snatch start I got it home and fitted a £100 reconditioned starter!!! This has worked fine since, first time start everytime although I've been here before so hopefully fingers crossed it will be fine now and not happen again. Thanks for all your input guys
  11. Cheers Dan, I'll remember that if it happens again, which I'm sure it will. May need to pm you on it at that point 2, thanks
  12. Thanks guys Wont be bothering with one of them then. £90 saved, result!!
  13. Hi guys, Would it be worth me getting one of them cheap tuning chips off ebay for my 1.9tdi 110bhp? Are they any good in terms of bhp and fuel economy or would I have to pay more to see any worth while benefits? Maybe its only worth getting a re-map? Also as its 10 year old and done 153,000 miles would it be worth doing anything? Cheers for any help recieved
  14. update on the starting problem, Figured out last week that if I hold the key in the start position for long enough (20secs or so of nothing) it suddenly kicks in and starts. Since then it starts first time every time!! I'm thinking sticky solinoid on the starter or relay. Anyone got any other ideas as I'm sure the problem will return pretty soon cheers
  15. No fuses are fine Mike, I have ruled out the 109 relay chesire cat as when it done the same a coupke of weeks back I took the relay out and was still messing about with the car when a while later instead of absolutely nothing when the key was turned it attempted to turn the engine, I then realised that I hadn't put the relay back in so put it in and the car started fine. Therefor the problem went when the relay wasn't even in. However I cant hear a fuel pump when turning the key, but would that not be isolated by the immobiliser, which I think is the problem? I haven't had the chance to have another look at it for a couple of days now and am away for the weekend but will get back onto it on Monday. Need to get it sorted next week or it'll have to be towed to a main dealer and cost me a fortune!! cheezemonkhai - No the engine does not crank, absolutely nothing happens when the key is turned apart from the noise of relays switching over.
  16. Thanks for replying Chesire cat, When the car wouldnt start 2 weeks ago there was a voltage at the starter and it wouldn't bump start either. I haven't checked this time as my mate isn't about with his voltmeter but its acting exactly ther same as before and it just suddenly started again and has started everytime since for 2 weeks until 2 days ago. Really annoying!
  17. Hi all, I am new to forums, I have joined this one as I try to do as much of the work needed on my car myself and am stuck!! My octavia 1.9tdi will not start, all lights are good on the dash but when you turn the key nothing at all happens. This first happened a couple of weeks ago but then it started a couple of hours later. Now it hasn't started for 2 days. I'm guessing its the immobiliser so I have tried resetting the keys butr no joy. The immobiliser light comes on on the dash but goes out with the others when the ignition is turned on Any ideas???
  18. Hi all, This is the first ever forum site I have joined. I have been driving a Skoda or a year or so now and love it. I try to do most of the work needed on the car myself so thought it would be a good idea to use other skodadrivers experiences. Chris
