  3. Went for a Golf 1.6 16v S with a petrol engine. Strange how familiar the interior and engine compartment are. Hopefully I can put all the things I've learnt (the hard way!) to good use.
  4. I'm leaving the Skoda fold but staying with the VAG family as I'm going for a 02 Golf. Had a lot of help here so many thanks. One last question- which VW forum is best for the same level of help/advice?
  5. Anybody got any thoughts about minimising oil consumption? I wondered if only filing halfway up the dispstick would help, giving more compressable air and less oil to pump out. Obviously keep a good eye on level.
  6. Easiest way with stickers on plastic/paint is to warm them first. Cloth soaked in v hot water (mind your hands) is recommended.
  7. Another cost factor is the question on your next insurance renewal- Have you had any convictions for speeding in the last 5 years? Guess it depends on insurer if or how much it adds. Double whammy for me when I got caught 7 yrs ago as I ride a ZX9R as well as drive a car.
  8. I've got an Ebay cable and VCDS Lite so I was thinking of taking that to run a scan, just looking for some advance info. Hoping it's the EGR system needing a clean.
  9. Going to see a Fabia tomorrow. Seller says it has the engine management light on but the local garage scanned it and found no error. Is this possible? Is it down to the scanner the garage used? All advice gratefully received
  10. Bought a Fabia 16v Comfort x-reg 94000 miles for £1400. Had the timing belt and bushes done for £360, new front tyres £120. Power steering light now on and have been through battery, earth lead and PAS sensor without a fix. Seatbelt light now appeared, Heater direction cable broken and no idea if the AC works so more money to spend. Should I throw good money after bad or salvage the bits I can and scrap it?
  11. Ever been the victim of theft? Not a nice feeling to see your pride and joy missing. If it's legit then there should be paperwork. Stolen goods will be recovered and you'll be out of pocket. I doubt your insurance company would pay on a major claim. PS Ask if they've got any war memorial plaques for sale?
  12. Anyone got a spare cable they can cut the nylon end off? Was going to glue and screw this on the broken end. A fiver for the time and postage
  13. Had the Heater control panel out this afternoon. The control cable isn't connected to the knob because the purple splines are broken and still in the back of the knob. Any suggestions? Starting to feel the car is fighting against me on even the simple jobs!
  14. I've had a quick scan through the post so excuse me if this has been mentioned. Have you disconnected the IDE and CD drives and run the pc for a while? Plug them back in (PC off!) one by one to see if there is any change. Could try the same with the memory.
  15. Just replaced the thermostat to get some heat output BUT the only airflow is from the windscreen vent no matter where the dial is. Where do I need to investigate- under the glove box or behind the control panel? Thanks in advance. Car is x-reg Fabia 1.4 petrol with air con.
  16. Having tried (and failed!) this job, I have one question. What do people use to loosen the bolt that goes through the front bushes? I had the car on axel stands and was using the longest bar I had and they wouldn't shift. I figured if I mangle the head then no-one would get it out and decided to let my local shop do it with an air wrench.
  17. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/205844-hunting-for-my-engine-code/page__p__2435701__hl__spark+plugs__fromsearch__1#entry2435701 Looks like 8v engine use a 5 plug and 16v use a 6 plug If you need a 6 plug - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NGK-Spark-Plugs-Iridium-IX-BKR6EIX-11-x4-Fits-SKODA-FABIA-1-99-07-1-4l-03-00-/110807341833?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19cca1db09
  18. Cheapest I could find. Delivery in a few days for other bits I've had from them. Check engine compatability http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-FABIA-1-4-2000-NGK-Iridium-Spark-Plugs-Set-x4-/220926091748?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item337038a1e4
  19. Got the dreaded flickering lights/PAS light syndrome. Anyone got a part no for the modified earth lead? Saw a couple on ebay but they are for 1.2 engines, will these be OK?
  20. .... that changing the thermostat was such a b*!~d job. Just spent all afternoon freezing my arse doing this job on my x-reg Fabia 1.4 Comfort as I was getting very litle heat out of the heater. Haynes seems to indicate very good access but the battery and assorted cabling is in the way. Had to detach the hose at the radiator end. So cold and ****ed off I couldn't work out which was the temperature sensor and clip so bled the system with the tank lid off. Anyone else done this job? Worthwhile paying someone else to do it. OK, rant over. PS Job well done as car is now toasty warm.
  21. Hi Just got a Skoda Fabia 1.4 Comfort on an X plate. Looks good on the outside but old MOT says it has only done 300 miles since 09! Will be picking the brains of the experts in due course so thanks in advance. My other vehicle is Kawasaki ZX-9R C1
