A delayed follow-up to my previous message as still having trouble with the boot release. Replacing the boot lock mechanism made no difference and neither did unplugging and replugging the Convenience Control module. I'm just experimenting with locking the car from inside while driving instead.

I'm going to follow your advice this week. The garage replaced the boot lock mechanism a couple of days ago but it made no difference. They're a bit stumped but I relayed your experience and they said it's worth a try. Fingers crossed it works... I'll report back.

Thanks for posting this and for the updates - my 2007 Octavia estate has developed the same problem. It only happens when I've had to use the boot unlock button on the remote (as the tailgate button sometimes doesn't work after unlocking the car) - after closing the boot, it sometimes pops open, either straight away (not so bad) or a minute or two later (less good if already driving). Just trying to track down solutions. WD40 on the lock solved the tailgate button issue for a week or so - will try that again and see if it stops the spontaneous boot opening too.
