  1. Hi Guys, I think my starter motor has gone on my 02 vRS but can I just check that I have everything covered before buying a new one... Turn the ignition and nothing happens, no solonoid clicking, but all lights etc work fine. Bump started the car and its fine Battery has 12.1v (guides advise 12.5v plus, would .4 down be ok to start it?) Using jump leads from a good battery also refuse to start it Tapped the motor with a mallet to check incase anything is 'stuck' inside Starter has 12.1v to it. Checked the other cable and its connected ok and seems secure, cleaned it anyway Anything else to check? Also to replace I believe its just remove battery and battery holder, move some cables out the way and disconnect starter motor then just undo the 2 or 3 bolts and pull out, then reverse that to install. Anything to be worried about disconnecting the battery, will it mess up the alarm or anything? Cheers Gav
  2. Sorry, this should have been in the Octavia II forum, dont know how to delete it!?!
  3. Hi, Ive currently got a Mk1 Octavia vRS which im planning on selling soon and getting a vRS TDI 170 to replace it with, now ive never owned a diesel but I have driven my friends Golf GT TDI Sport 170 and I loved that engine, so much torque and I love the way it overtakes, plus it's as quick as my vRS but returning over 45mpg So, are there anythings I need to be aware of with diesel ownership as ive read alot about DMF / DPF issues on diesels where owners need to replace the DMF every 20k at £700+ a time, and problems with the DPF if you dont warm the car up or only do short trips.... how serious of a problem is this as its putting me off a diesel and I dont fancy paying out to replace the DMF every 2 years..... FYI I only do 11k a year and most of it is in town with longer drives at the weekend so am I likely to have DPF issues? Diesel ownership for me is about the way the car drives, loads of torque with good mpg, at present I dont use all the power of my car I just dont like reving an engine to 5,000+rpm to get at the power... im lazy I guess Any advise would be great.

  5. Good to know, ive got the same issue with mine now, just got off the phone with Brakes International, £75.76 + VAT, bit cheaper now
  6. OMG what good timing this is, ive got the same car, same age aswell, and mine was in the garage yesterday as I have a sticky caliper... guy took off the rear caliper, cleaned it all and put it back, still got the problem. A 10min drive round the block and the disc temp on the near side was 13 degrees C and the off side (which is sticking) was 33 degrees C... over double in 10min of casual driving! The guy said I need a new caliper as it could be the hand brake link inside the caliper that is stuck on or the seals, if this seal kit does the job that will save me some money, unless its the handbrake linl??? Any advise on handbrake links, do these things over adjust and stick on?? Thanks for the post
  7. Hey, thats perfect. Ive tried to pm you but when I press the pm button the screen goes dark and nothing happens!?!?!?! PM me is you can, maybe that would work? But im interested. Gav
  8. Hi, Since all the bad weather and ice ive had a broken front spring, speaking to Skoda main dealer it will be approx £180 for a pair of front springs, but GSF can do the pair for £100, and its listed as my car - 02 Octavia vRS. Has anyone bought springs for there vRS from GSF, if so have they been the right ones, ie poundage, height etc? Im just a bit worried that alought they would be £80 cheaper, the springs would be too high or too soft.... Thanks
  9. FYI ive just priced up new front and rear shocks and springs for my 02 VRS from a main dealer - £633.78 inc vat!!!!!!!
  10. Yep, my Octy vRS came with 16's as standard, 18's now though
  11. Cool, so I guess you know my next question What shocks work well with standard springs? (that dont cost the earth).... Cheers.
  12. Agreed about the H&R springs, alot of people recommend them. Is the 10mm/20mm drop less than that of the standard vrs springs? I cannot afford FSD's... way to much but they would be perfect. Im looking at approx £300/£350 for the suspension kit, and H&R are going to be about £150 i think. Quick question, as my springs appear to be ok, and they dont wear out much over time, but the dampers are knackered, if i replace just the dampers for upgraded ones that work with std springs, will that firm the ride up, giving less body roll / better handling or as im still using std springs will it still be bouncy?
  13. Ok, so ive been looking at some kits, below for example, are they any good, i know some are not specific to the vRS, but if you are replacing both springs and shocks does it matter? Koni Str.t (Street) Fixed damping Sports Suspension Kits atfor Skoda Octavia Saloon 1.8T, 2.0, 1.9SDi, 1.9TDi - larkspeed.com Skoda - larkspeed.com Or some i go for uprated dampers with H&R springs? although i wouldn't know which dampers to go for?
  14. Yeah I know what you mean, everytime im stopped I sit with my foot on the brake, and I never use the hand brake, unless im doing a hill start or parked
  15. oooh, i will give the petol stations a look.. cheers.
  16. Hadnt thought of that. I drive in town all the time, so im always on the brakes, also, i buy them from Halfords, the cheaper ones, so thinking about it i guess thats normal considering....
  17. Err, just had a look at the lights, where is the earth lead? You have the 4 bulbs in the holder, and a load of leads off one side... which one is earth and where does it connect it?
  18. Cheers for the feedback Jigger72, and the wishes.... I cannot wait to be a dad I didnt realise that springs dont wear out, so would you say they are as hard now as from new? If so, could i just replace the shocks, if so, which ones? Also, would std springs generally be a bit more bouncy compared to H&R for example? Im just trying to weighing up the options, ie: - Standard suspension with uprated bushes / rear arb - Standard springs with new shocks (not sure which make) and uprated bushes / rear arb - Uprated springs and shocks, and poss bushes / rear arb - Uprated springs and shocks with uprated bushes / rear arb Last option will be too expensive....
  19. I had one of those eBay induction kits fitted, didnt make much difference to the car but it had the noise i liked (at the time) however in the wet the filter got wet as it sat behind the right grill in the front bumper... not good, so took it off and got a bloody warning light which had to be removed, another £25 down the pan! Its sat in the garage now, it does make a nice home for spiders though.....
  20. If i was to replace mine it would be a 330d Sport, but for you budget, get a nice S4, a Ducati 1098 and MK Indy kitcar with a blade engine, S4 for everyday fun, bikes are great fun anytime, as long as its dry, and the kitcar for fast road and track use.... got all bases covered then
  21. Hi, Ive just found out that ive blown yet another brake light bulb, which makes it 4 since Jan, both sides are blowing? Any idea what would cause this? Cheers Gav
  22. Jigger72, if you could let me know how it is i would be interested to know, and it sounds a good price for the kit, but will it work ok on the vRS or is it much of an upgrade over std vRS suspension? I will have a look into it, and i can stomach the cost of the bushes, and poss the rear ARB, depending on what the missus says! Also I read someone on here that the std suspension is from the S3, not sure if thats true though? Anyhow, with standard suspension, understeer is fine, well its not, but i know what im getting with it, but mine doesnt do that, almost like oversteer, the front dives alot, even when driving normally and pot holes are almost bone shaking, but last night i pushed it hard on my fav A roads (about 40 miles in total) and they are fast, smooth and twisty, it was all over the place, side to side up and down, im sure the baby would have been very sick!! The car is an 02 and done 70,000 and i believe the suspension has been on since new. So im thinking the springs have gone soft (if they can do that) and the shocks are buggered, leaking or something, but too soft, last MOT said there was misting from the front left, which probably explains the tail happy side effects on the roundabout.... and last night! Thanks for the advise so far guys...
  23. Hi, I have a Octavia Mk1 vRS and the suspension is all over the place at the moment, and today i gave it a bit round a roundabout and the front was all over the place and the rear felt like it was coming round, plus its bouncy and bumps are hard, i feel sick sometimes driving it!! LOL. Im assuming this is because the suspension is too soft and cannot react quick enough, anyway, now with a baby here any week now i need to replace this saggy suspension before my money is consumed by the baby, but i dont want it to be too hard for poor baby Alot of people recommend Koni FSD's with H&R springs, or even Standard springs, but i cannot afford this due to baby and the additional need for front brakes and a service!! :( Im looking at around £300 for the shocks and springs, and i will fit them myself. Question is, can anyone recommend a kit for that sort of money, and is it worth replacing the bushes at the same time? If i dont go down the kit route, would keeping the suspension std, but upgrading the bushes and adding a rear arb make a better option? Any feedback would be cool. Thanks. Gav
  24. Its all in and sorted!! hell yeah, i have BASS!!!!!! I used L brackets to hold it in place, earth to the left seat belt, had to wrap the wire around the thread and screwed it up tight! Sounds really good now. Cheers for all the help guys....
