  1. A shock absorber isn't a damper, it's a spring. That's the point! It's a common misconception. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=DoYaRsNFlEYC&pg=PA398&lpg=PA398&dq=shock+absorber+hilliers&source=bl&ots=3P_ZRBxkct&sig=aPEguNUtA2ayZdJmSZl60UOwhJo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj2ms-Q1OPUAhXLIcAKHWzyABYQ6AEIMzAC#v=onepage&q=shock absorber hilliers&f=false
  2. It doesn't. The thread is titled '2009 VRS shock question' and then he talks about ride height. He never mentioned dampers, you did...
  3. The springs absorb the shocks, the dampers damp the spring oscillations. Therefore the original question is correct....
  4. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222442530345 Long life for £19.98 delivered.
  5. Having done a fair bit of research on this, the 5w30 is the long life stuff which meets 504/507. 5w40 is correct if you are on the short service and it should meet 502 spec. Dunno why there is a difference in the viscosity but there you go.
  6. A quick search on the TPS website lists different oil viscosities for the MY2012 and the MY2013 petrol VRS. MY2012 is 5w30 and MY2013 is 5w40. Euro Car Parts lists it as taking 5w40 oil yet the dealer at all my services has put in 5w30 and the car came supplied with a top up bottle of 5w30. So, the question is, which is the correct oil viscosity (assuming both meet VW502.00 spec)?
  7. Price is about right for the alignment. As for swapping the tyres, industry advice is to have the tyres with the most tread on the rear. When fitting new tyres to police cars the policy is new tyres go on the rear and the rears to the front. As a collision investigator, crashes where tyres have been a contributing factor have all featured worn or under inflated rear tyres. My my advice would be wear out the fronts, buy two new tyres and put them on the rear and move the rears forwards. Cue the internet experts who will contradict that and that and draw your own opinions but for safety sake I wouldn't.
  8. I have the same one you mentioned fitted to mine. It was an uprated one for me as mine is a petrol engine but it slots in fine and the cover still fits.
  9. Having been in your shoes a few weeks ago I did my research, it's not worth upgrading from double platinum to iridium plugs. The NGK part number you quote is correct. I went for Bosch as they are of a comparable quality but were about £7 cheaper than ECP who were the cheapest for NGK.
  10. The link above doesn't seem to work. The eBay item number is 232036315533.
  11. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232036315533 Ive just fitted these to mine. It's stage 1 and normal plugs are all that is needed for that. I was surprised that although the ones I took out had only done 33k and looked ok, my economy has jumped from 30mpg to 36mpg on my commute. Not sure how the standard plugs would last 60k. One thing, although plugs allegedly come pre-gapped, always double check. One of mine was slightly out.
  12. I've looked at the Custom Keys website and I can't find any listing for the FL key (led at the top of the key). Do they not do these or are these keys tricky to re-shell? I have one that needs doing but I'm loathe to diy it as it is a tricky job.
  13. You sure it isn't the coil pack? I would swap swap two over first and see if the fault moves cylinders first.
  14. Baby wipes work well for cleaning the steering wheel. If you use a specialist leather cleaner don't over wet the leather and don't scrub it.
  15. One brake fluid change and one MOT is included. My renewal paperwork confirms this.
  16. 18 payments of £21 means the cost is spread. Brake fluid change included (£49). MOT included (£39). That means the two services cost £145 each which works out quite reasonable in my book. Ok, you might get a cheaper price at a local garage but at my main dealer they provide me with a courtesy car FOC, wash and Hoover it out if needs be and they always throw in a free bottle of screen wash.
  17. He said he liked it black. I said if you are keeping it black then wrap it. Why spend a fortune painting it when you can get the same look for a lot less? Neither I or the OP mentioned colour coding it in the original post.
  18. If you are keeping it black then get it vinyl wrapped. It won't chip like the paint will and with a bit of patience you can do the job in a couple of hours and for about £5. Mine has been wrapped in carbon weave vinyl for about 4 years now and it looks as good as new.
  19. I have PS4's on as well. They haven't only been on the market long enough to have degraded. I find that the turbo kicking in can break traction if you go to full throttle. If you don't bury the accelerator until you are doing 15-20mph then it does get going cleanly. Mines a DSG which I think is harder to launch but is then quicker through the gears as expected. Mine has the XDS differential but this works more in a curved path. http://en.volkswagen.com/en/innovation-and-technology/technical-glossary/elektronische_differenzialsperrexds.html
  20. The Blackline came with the Amundsen+ head unit which has Bluetooth. This isn't enabled as standard but can be done quickly and easily. You need to install the mic (10 minutes max) and then get someone with VCDS to put a tick in the box to enable it. There are numerous threads on how to do it on here.
  21. Google fibreglass rust brush. I would not use a chemical on such a small spot as it's likely to creep under the remaining paint. Ive used the brushes in the past and they work a treat.
  22. They work as they should. Take it back and point out to the tester that the DRL's work as the position lights and the bulbs fitted aren't actually connected (the headlights are the same across the range and the bulbs work on models without DRL's.
  23. If you don't turn on the ignition whilst the airbag switch is disconnected the airbag light won't come on.
  24. Whilst the alarm sirens do fail as specified, I think you have been led down the wrong path with yours randomly going off. Dirt, dust of cobwebs in the sensor can trigger it so the first step would be to clean it out. If it persists then disconnect the sensor and see if this cures it. VCDS would tell you if the siren is defective but they generally fail in as much as the battery is flat and no sound is emitted.
