  1. 10 AAs in series will theoretically give you 15v which is a bit high. I have 2 50cm led strips (I bought 4 but didn't need the extra light so went for 2 to save battery) powered from a battery box with 8 AAs in my shed and I reckon a standard alkaline set of AAs should have a running time of about 3-6 hours (I don't know what the active voltage of the LEDs are). Wired into a double pole light switch with an extension cord it works very well. Although I also made sure to get a battery box with an off switch as well. The led strips plug into each other with barrell connectors come with a power connector to solder to a power supply although I just cut the denial end off the extension cable and wired it directly through the switch. On the photos the black box box above the light switch is the battery box. 2. I couldn't get into series 2 but series three is a lot better as it's a different topic and you don't really need to have watched S2. Pretty rough in places though.
  3. I've been told that even with 3 points for mobile the premium goes up a fair amount. But everyone is different and have different cars. I'd suggest you do a gomeerkatsupermarket quote with and without if you want to know.
  4. Don't know about the French cars but I've been looking at a Fiesta for my "brother in law" and Carwow quotes are coming in at about 3k off and 0% finance. Might be worth running your build through carwow to see what dealers will really offer. Also so not sure but the 0% from Ford might be available on the MPVs.
  5. Despite all all the negatives that come with RFLs I would say manufacturers either have to offer a spacesaver to fit RFLs. By preference I'd have both a full spare and RFLs but with staged alloys and the width of BMW tyres id have no boot with 2 wheels in it. My mate just bought a polo beats by "Dr" Dre and it can't have a spare. It's got the well for it but it's full of subwoofer that makes all the trim rattle. Well done VW.
  6. VED is a waste of time. Imho it should just be tacked onto the prodigious amount of tax on fuel. That way ifyou have a gas guzzler you pay more... my tdi vRS was £30/year and year my mates tsi Fabia is £140 and gets far better mpg round the town and not much different on long runs. Madness.
  7. And the creation of batteries isn't polluting? Plus depending on where the electricity is generated all you may be doing is shifting where you're polluting. It really depends on how much grass you want to cut but a mate swears by the Ryobi cordless mowers, mind when he bought it he already had the drills etc so had a good supply of batteries. Peronally after switching from an electric to a petrol I'll stick with petrol.
  8. I was speaking to a master tech the other day and he indicated this was going to happen. He he was also thoroughly scathing on the existing mini based BMWs, X1, 2 series active tourer. Having driven both I had asked him about them, it was interesting to see he had the same opinion as me - horrid.
  9. Personally I'd say get a i3,i5 or i7 (i3 is fine for most stuff imho) and as an absolute must a ssd not hdd.
  10. Ditto, 42 was my average with 13 the lowest (continual regens over a single tank due to swmbo doing short runs) and 47 the highest.
  11. Worst is the vomit inducing lack of visability due to the sport seats. I also had a lot of complaints about road noise and harsh ride from passengers although it never bothered me overly before I got rid of it. Other than that that it'd make a good taxi as the space is great although don't expect decent mpg from the diesel in my experience.
  12. I have the Adaptive LEDs on my X3 and I've never been flashed other than when I set it to continental traffic by mistake. The only time I've noticed it not dipping/moving the light beam away from traffic is if I'm approaching a car at 45degrees that's waiting to join the road at a junction and then I'll override it. All in all its amazingly good but as with all tech you have to watch it and make sure it's working not just relying on it.
  13. We got the hitachi some time ago for £100 but I've seen it cheaper elsewhere, screwfix have it for £120 which is a bit steep but easy to fine on a phone http://www.screwfix.com/p/hitachi-dv18dgl-jg-18v-2-5ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill/6832k Really good drill even for drilling through the gable end with a masonry bit which was surprising. Also because it's li-ion it's a massive step up from the old nicad drills as it's actually got charge when you go to use it. The mutts nuts is supposed to be milwaukee though.
  14. Last two cars I've driven this week (hire cars) have had speed limiters in addition to cruise control. Merc A class Mondaeo something or other. No that I used it other than by mistake on the Merc.
  15. Not a car I'd want but it looks like a beautiful example of craftsmanship.
  16. What makes you think that? E2E encryption is just that - if it's properly implemented it means even the provider can't breach it. I noticed the Scottish police are using this an excuse to get more armed police on the ground as well - just like when they were trying sneak them in but didn't manage. I don't claim that this was a conspiracy but the powers that be have been waiting for this ready to take advantage once the "great unwashed" are cowed by their lackies in the media.
  17. Urgh. Well I hope it's not a 500x the OP gets. The "certain hire car co" delivered a 500x (cat d) when I ordered an insignia (cat e) for Monday morning but unfortunately just put the keys through the letterbox. Horrid car. They're coming to change it over on Monday - I'm not driving that to Birmingham to Edinburgh. Yeah the new astra surprised me as well..
  18. If it's anything like a certain hire car company my work use I'd not be surprised it it was a smaller car. Ordered an astra size last week and they delivered a Yaris. Told them to bolt as was driving Edinburgh to Birmingham and they came back with a 16 plate Merc A180d by way of an apology, with the back hanging out of the drivers seat and a missing SatNav SD card. Only 4k miles on the clock as well.
  19. Oh dear this again. I have no doubt some people won't like my comments but hayho. Its sad that a police officer has been killed. It's sad when anyone is killed and horrific for families etc. But as as far as I'm concerned it's the same as soldiers - you should be aware when you take the kings shilling that you are potentially being paid to put your life in front of others and may well be killed in the line of duty. If you don't like it quit and stop complaining! As for speeding I don't see how it's related to yesterday's events. In my "perfect" world speeding would not be a prosecutable crime. Speeding is not intrinsically dangerous ON ITS OWN, inappropriate speed is what is dangerous but that's not easy for the police to crack down on. It's much more difficult to catch the person doing 50 in a snowstorm than someone doing 80 in a 70 on an empty road in perfect weather. You can't just sit in a van on an overpass or stick a gatso to catch the person in the snow. As as far as I'm concerned there shouldn't be a financial penalty attached to driving enforcement. That way it can't be claimed it's a money making scheme. Just enforce the points adding up properly! None of this "I'm sorry I was doing 90 in a 50" but I need my license for work. (True story of a coworker - ended up with 12 points, already on 9, but kept his license).
  20. Dlna is a real pita. I used it on my Samsung tv for a while and it did work but took me ages of footering to get it working on the correct profile for transcoding etc. For the iphone/iPad I'd recommend just using an app that plays directly off the file share rather than dnla. OPlayer is excellent and whilst not free is very reasonable (I think there is an oplayer lite so you can try it).
  21. The BBC are reporting landlords would prefer pets to housing benefit. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-39102860 Ignoring the fact they seem to be citing figures from flat sharing website rather than rentals it's an interesting question, which would you rather. I'd say it's not much of a surprise, no personal experience of being a landlord but with all the TV shows about benefit tenants wrecking houses and keeping the money only to force the owner to pay yet more money to legally evict them I can see why there's this perception. Plus round here they're still forcing builders to put social housing on private estates. In my estate there's been 2 murders in the space of two years in the social housing plus the bit where social housing has been built is minging with rubbish everywhere, cars in bits in the parking spaces, cars parked on the grass, trees and play park equipment vandalised etc etc - thankfully it's a fair bit away from me so it doesn't appear to have impacted house prices too much but it still costs a fortune in maintenance to repair the damage as it's spread out over the whole estate.
  22. Didn't Citroen do this a while ago by offering 2 years free insurance with a new car? Seems like a good idea - it's really hard for youngsters to get the money together for a car and insurance so anything that can help is great. Car insurance isn't cheap for a reason for new drivers but it's a difficult one cause how are they ever going to get experience?
  23. I watched it last night whilst over at a mates: all I can say I'm glad I don't have a TV license! Maybe they're just settling down with out Evans but LeBlanc was dreadful, slow and irritating. Rory Reid is just completely lacking in personality, the only one even slightly watchable was Chris Harris and even he is trying too hard to be James May with the pedantic facts. They're still trying to copy old top gear and imho it doesn't work. Dreadful. I shall try and catch season 3, hopefully they've got rid of Matt LeBlanc by then.
  24. Thats the tech in the F25, no missiles though.
  25. Ah googled it - looks like it's a pop up screen on the dash like the Mazda system rather than the projection onto the windscreen. Can't comment on the 3008 system was was rather underwhelmed by the Mazda hud - would have dismissed the BMW system on that basis had the demo car not had it. Really like the look of the new 5, but it doesn't appear to have aux heating which is a shame. Also the gesture controlled stereo is a nice idea. No officer I wasn't doing wain keer signs at you I was trying to shut up Nigel Farage on the radio.
