  1. As title, ordered an SEL 1.5 litre with DSG gearbox in "metallic race blue" (fed up with grey cars, had loads in the past). I added the following: Adaptive cruise control (I had that in the golf 1.4 match I P/X for the kamiq so I'm used to it) Space saving spare wheel front and rear parking sensors Adjustable boot floor thats reversible Treated paintwork, scotch guarded interior and security etched glasswork I went for the 1.5 as it has more torque and a nit nippier than the 1 litre versh (which I reckon is still a very good engine btw) and I didn't find/notice any of the "stuttering" mentioned about the 1.5 motor. Gonna be a while before it turns up, about 12 weeks, but I'm in rush and I'll post back here as to how it goes, etc.
  2. Just had the same problem on my 2011, 1.4 TSI hatchback. Wife complained of a musty smell at rear and on investigation I found a swimming pool in me wheel well. I dried it out as best I could and left it for about 1/2 hour in the pouring rain. On returning, it had a little bit of water sitting in the well again. I checked the boot lid seal and, as said earlier, I found the seal drain hole at the uppermost point and a pool of water accumulating to the left of the boot lip as the car was parked leaning over to the left slightly. I cut two small holes with a scalpel at the lowest points in the seal and I was surprised as to how much water poured out from inside the seal! Anyways, its now sitting outside in the rain and I'll post back if it has an effect.
  3. I've been running a 1.4 TSI manual now for a coupla years, never had a problem at all, good fuel consumption (seems to hover around the high 40s with mix of town and motorway driving. The power output of this motor is like an old school 2.0 litre injection engine and feels like it punches well above it's weight. Cruising at 80-90mph is a doddle and theres even a bit in reserve for overtaking but not much. Very tractable around town and easy to drive, so much so I even find it relaxing to some degree. Very smooth too and not very noisy except when you rev it and even then its still very acceptable. I would suggest a test drive to make your own mind up but I reckon you're gonna be pleasantly surprised. Hope this helps.
  4. What would people here recommend for an octy 1.4TSI? I notice the bulk of replies here are from owners of Vrs octys and 1.9 diesels and I imagine theres a fair difference in performance between my car and the others mentioned here. I came back from Gatwick to west london the other day and my tyres, Dunlop sport 01 205/60/15, were very noisy (depending on road surface), not particularly comfortable and lacked feel through the steering wheel. I'm contemplating replacing all four with summat that are quiet in all/ most conditions, comfortable, allow better steering feel than the dunlops, track better at motorway speeds and tend not to wander and give acceptable wet and dry grip levels for driving and braking. They're not going to pushed anywhere near the limit as I'm quite a sedate driver (I get me kicks on a motorbike, a Fazer 600). I'm also not too concerned about tyre wear as I barely do 5000mls a year but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on 'em though. The other thing I'm I'd like to know is what are the advantages/ disadvantages of going for a slightly different tyre size, 225 as opposed to 205 'frinstance.
  5. Totally agree with the comments posted above. I've got an octy hatch 1.4 TSI and the engine surprises every time I drive the car. Think old style 2 litre injected and thats what the car goes like, good economy, lower road tax due lower emissions and the 1.2 TSI is a good motor as well being not that much slower than the 1.4. lots of people have been surprised how the car goes when fully loaded, it won't spin the wheels when it accelerates, but like wise it won't struggle either.
  6. Got a 2011 1.4 TSI octy and I'm trying to figure out what the tyre pressures are supposed be. I've had a look at the feul cap cover where theres a data plate but it doesn't show the figures in PSI, just some other numbers. I'd like to get the pressures right so can anyone here enlighten me as to what these pressures are in PSI? The tyres in question are dunlop SP sport 01 and the sizes are 205/60/15/V rated. Cheers
  7. Bits that worry me is look at that roof line, anyone over average height (ie: my kids) are gonna have a problem with the headroom in the back and that boot opening is a wind up surely. I don't mind the front that much, looks reasonable to me, but way the rear lights cross over into the boot lid is a bit yuk and the overall appearance smacks of a Mondeo as previously mentioned. Just noticed something else, the front end in profile tends to look like its been punched in the nose to me due to that bonnet edge line tapering upwards toward the windscreen.
  8. Got any pics and would like the unit's part number if possible to check compatibility, also if the unit includes sat nav ariel.
  9. Hi mate, is this out of an octy and, if so, what year? And I'll have a 1 year old bolero going spare out of a 2011 octy
  10. Update to the thread, I have the option of getting hold of an earlier columbus unit an "MFD2" version and was wondering about compatibility with one of these units (older) out of a 2007 octy being installed and used in a 2011 octy. Any pitfalls, suggestions, opinions? Cheers.
  11. Is it possible you could give me the Skoda part number off this unit as the people I'm talking to say they can check compatibilty directly using this number. Cheers.
  12. I'm interested in this, I'll do a bit of digging and check out the compatibility with 2011 octy
  13. What year octy did this come out of mate?
  14. As an Octy driver of a bout 4 weeks with a 1.4TSI motor in it, I really can't get over just how good that engine is, especially when compared to engines of only a few years ago. I had a Nissan tino (almera on steroids) which had a 1.8i engine in it and that could hardly pull the skin off a bowl of rice pudding! the engine in me Octy is streets ahead of it in terms of performance, economy, torque (yes, torque) ease of use in town, and fair performance on the motorway. A lot of people who've been in the car can't believe its only a 1.4 until I tell them.
  15. I assume the Maxidot is the small area between the rev tacho and speedo that gives info regarding mileage, gear position, trip computer, wether your doors open, etc \Theres also a switch on the lighting stalk that moves between various mileage/ fuel consumption/journey time figures, etc If it is then yes, I got maxidot
  16. Ok ppl looks like I'm going to be getting a columbus MFD3 unit, but I have few questions: Whats the battery drain situation with these units (MFD3 type) as the info available seems a bit ambiguous to me? Considering me car is a 2011 SE mk II octy, will this unit enable me to have some control of it using the controls on the lighting stalk (maxidot thing)? Does it enable you have the radio/cd playing and sat nav in use at the same time, ie: listening to music then the sat nav cuts in to advise of direction change, etc, that sort of thing? Anything sle i should be aware of regarding fitting, parts needed etc?
  17. As an aircraft engineer we had it drummed into us a long time ago better to be safe than sorry. A lot of us ignore what the safety limits are and take a LOT longer than stipulated. I've seen a few accidents where people weren't careful, didn't read the manual, thought they knew better, etc. ANYTHING that involves any form of capacitive discharge should be treated with caution and respect, let your guard down for a second and you could be in world of hurt both personally and financially. if it were me and the manual says 20mins or whatever, I'd double or treble that figure. If that sounds anal then so be it, like they same, "famliarity breeds contempt" and accidents do happen. Be safe
  18. Theoretically then, the columbus unit should fit easily with the existing wiring loom supplied with a 2011 Octavia SE model. I would assume things like the gps antenna would come supplied with the unit? One other thing, does this unit allow the driver to listen to the radio while using the sat nav with the directions being voiced on top of the radio audio? I must admit it seems a bit daft to me to only be able to use one function at a time.
  19. I reckon a max budget of about £500 hopefully including someone to fit it also.
  20. Righto, finally got me hands on me new Octavia, its a "cappucino" coloured versh, 1.4TSI SE, 7,500 miles on the clock. I had some parking sensors fiited by the garage, marlborough motors in Isleworth in west London, that have a visual display thats mounted above the rear window and comprises of a set of amber, green and red lights that change colour the closer you get to an obstacle, works extremely well too along with the aural warning. Well pleased with it so far, only had it since Saturday afternoon but managed to take it out on Sunday for an 80 mile round trip, very impressive on the motorway, reasonably quiet, good road holding, steering adequate (seems to be a point of criticism on these cars on some reviews I've read) and I still can't get over the fact that the engine is only a 1.4 litre, well pleased here. Anyways, as this car doesn't have a built in double din display sat nav unit, just the "Bolero" thingy, I'd like to upgrade to something that has at least satnav and a decent sounding stereo. Blue tooth and mp3 options aren't really important but I suppose I could get used to them, as said, all I want/ need is a double din radio and sat nav unit. Is there a particular brand/ manufacturer that ppl here would recommend? which ones are the easiest to fit? give the best "bang for buck" as it were? Reliability, ease of use and simple on screen graphics are really what I need too. Any suggestions, options, opinions would be appreciated.

  22. I've been doing a fair bit of digging around getting what info I can and it appears theres quite a few double din sat nav units available to buy that'll take a reversing camera input, its just a case of finding one thats suitable for me and the missus. Also, reliability, build quality, ease of use, what the on screen graphics look like (garish colours, 'orrid pics, etc), I while state that I prefer a "restrained " appearance for both the look of the unit itself and the on screen graphics.
