  1. Hi mate, Could I get dibs on the right wingmirror body assuming the price is reasonable? ta
  2. I had a poke around last night - experimented with putting an M8 bolt through the bracket which the pedal butts up against with a couple of nuts - quite easy to adjust the end position. but it seemed (perhaps not surprisingly) that significantly reducing the upper stroke of the pedal caused the clutch to slip again under high torque. so I guess I'll leave it like it is. thanks for the above feedback guys.
  3. Chaps, Following the excellent details on this 'ere forum, I've just replaced my OE clutch ('03 vRS) with the VR6/G60 conversion, and first impressions (3 miles so far!) are good - it is an appreciably lighter action and seems to engage nice and smoothly. The biting point is about 75% of the way down to the carpet, so you only have to lift your foot a little and it moves off. Thing is, this means there's a lot of dead travel at the top of the pedal. I wonder if there's something easy I can do about this - I thought of simply getting under the dash and fixing something to whatever acts as the mechanical stop at the top of pedal travel, so as to make the pedal sit lower down. As I believe it's a hydraulic clutch, I guess it's not as simple as just adjusting a cable! Any suggestions? (edit - it occurs to me that I don't necessarily want to adjust the clutch bite, I'd be happy just moving the upper limit of the pedal)
  4. what's the general thinking on second hand flywheels? someone's breaking a G60 on ebay and the new item is a bit on the steep side. is it a part which tends to wear out or would an old one still be up to scratch?
  5. i thought there was probably an explanation. thanks v much!
  6. My 03 Octy vRS has 106k under its belt, the last few k of which were after a Revo remap, so i wasn't entirely surprised when the clutch started to slip. to begin with, it was sporadic, sometimes it would slip when the boost came on, others not. now it consistently slips whenever the turbo kicks in, in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. i am therefore thinking of fitting the vr6/g60 conversion for the clutch and flywheel (discussed extensively on these boards). however, there's one thing i don't understand - as far as i can tell, the clutch doesn't slip in 1st. 1st doesn't take very long to hit the red line, in fairness, but as far as i can tell it does so without any clutch slippage - it seems as neck-snapping as ever and the acceleration and revs seem to remain proportionate. otherwise the gears and so on are working fine. is this normal? would be nice to know before i shell out on the parts for the new clutch etc. the car is only worth £2k or so, so if it were new gearbox time then I'd have to think seriously about whether or not to keep it.
  7. ... and I forgot to say ... after I'd said "cambelt change for an 03 Octy vRS", they asked me the following: - so, is that the petrol or diesel model? - is that the 1.8 or the 2.0 litre - is that the 120, 150 or 180bhp engine? Hmm ... nice to know they really know about the cars.
  8. Ha ha ... my local dealer (Platinum, Bath) just quoted me for cambelt, water pump and 40k service ....... £800. Thinking I might just go somewhere else... :-)
  9. The sticker in your log book with lots of letters on ... some of those refer to whether the car was supplied as fixed or variable service iirc. Fraid I can't remember which letters it is, and there's no guarantee that it hasn't been changed since new. I'm sure a dealer can tell you which letters it is...
  10. I was pretty pessimistic about getting a bit drop on the insurance, was with Chris Knott who seemed to make an effort to get the lowest price 12 months ago, but had a look around, and much like some of the others above was pretty amazed by MoreThan ... 28yo male no points unmod'd 03 Octy vRS fairly low miles/year last year £560 this year £350 me = :-)
  11. Hey Paul - there is some info on that page, you just need to follow this link: MKIV Jetta Alientech Install
  12. Have the same car with the same changer and I've only seen that message when trying to play CD-RW discs - no problems with CDRs or legit discs....
  13. Hi Mark, I don't have what you're after, sorry, but might possibly be interested in buying some bars. Your pic shows a Mk II octy - are your roof bars specific to Mk II or would they also fit my Mk I vRS hatch? (Oh, I wonder if the answer to that question would be in the document you're trying to get your hands on... :-) Cheers Jez
  14. Ouch - did a granny run to devon recently and scraped up to about 39 mpg - can't get higher than that in mine. Average 30mpg on my work trips (8 mile each way stop-start hilly roads around Bath). Octy I vRS
  15. hmm. just had a look and there's a cable coming out of the top of the A-pillar which goes to a small black plastic rectangle stuck to the top corner of the inside of the screen. on the outside there is another plastic rectangle stuck in the same place, with a 2" aerial coming out of it. I'd assumed that there was a small hole with a wire going through it ... I suppose they could be doing something clever with inductance, but I'm not convinced...
  16. Got it out just now - thanks again. Had to take the glove box off and found the box of tricks behind there. Unplugged the cables from it and everything works again now. Can't be bothered to remove the mic or the aerial (which is drilled thru the windscreen anyway), but if anyone wants the box of tricks (Nokia HFU-2) let me know.
  17. Nah that's just it - I tried holding TP down and - just like all the other buttons except on/off - it does nothing. Grr.
  18. Thanks for the hints - much appreciated - will have a go at lunchtime and let you know how I get on. Bengie - cos it was raining out and I was too knackered to do the job properly - how's that for a reason? :-) Wolfsbane - if I can get the damn thing out then you're welcome to it mate.
  19. Morning guys, When I bought my Octy I vRS it had a Nokia phone kit wired into the stereo - nice job too. I don't have a Nokia mobile, tho, so it's not much use. Decided finally to get rid of the cradle at least, so unscrewed it from the plate which is wedged down between the trim, disconnected the inline aerial connection but had to cut through the multi-core cable which links it to the stereo. Mistake, apparently, as now when you switch the stereo on it just says "PHONE" and you can't access radio, CDs, setup menu etc. None of the buttons (including holding TP for 2 secs) do anything at all. I guess I should have gone into the stereo's menu system first and changed it to phone = off, but it's a bit late now! Can anyone advise how I can get my music back?! Do I need to access the back of the stereo and disconnect the phone cable (and if so, is it obvious which one this is?), or is there a way of hacking into the setup menu and bypassing the stupid "phone" message. Thanks a lot.
