  1. Thanks Ian Interesting Re Border cars, I had actually visited there and they seemed nice and friendly, although the fact they were hoping to get a few grand off me helps I suppose. I agree the petrol seems the way for me regarding my usage and I have driven a 1.4tsi which was impressive. I am struggling a bit though, I think the Yeti is a fantastic vehicle but once you go rearwards from the front seats I am not as impressed, the back seats especially feel all frame with little comfort. I have a test drive next week of the IX35 which I have had a look at and a 'sit in', the interior comfort seemed much better all round and Edgars the dealer is well known for not the cheapest around but fantastic customer service during and after sales. In fact when I mentioned I would like to take the car up the road for a run the salesman told me to plan a day out with the wife and take the IX35 so I can judge it properly. 5 year warranty as well, RAC cover and a decent 3 year service plan hmmmmmm... then the Yeti is heaped with praise by owners and reviewers...hence my head is spinning.
  2. As a newbie here and finding it a friendly spot of super keen Yeti owners of which I am planning to join, I find this scary. 2 weeks for a HT lead? On back order? Does that really mean you are unable to go and buy a HT lead?
  3. Yes.. as the OP for this thread and a Newbie to the Yeti and DSG I can see there are certainly some strong lines of thought re the whole gearbox issue. I suspect the discussions could be never ending and there will always be two camps and their individual views. It has helped me though and my decision is the DSG appears to be an excellent system thats well liked by those that have it and the future is without a doubt more and more cars on the road without something for your left foot to do, however for the time being I will stick to manual for the following reasons: I don't mind changing gear at all, in fact I quite enjoy it I can buy a higher spec with the saving on not buying DSG I am a dinosaur and I still worry re repair costs if DSG becomes faulty..yes I know that's a neg view..but it's mine. Thanks folks and I am enjoying the rest of the forum and learning valuable info before parting with my 'hard earned'
  4. You probably have a very valid point, when I tried the 1.2 it was a new demonstrator and had less than 50 miles on it..plus a very watchful salesman next to me. Today with the 1.4 the younger salesmans first words were 'lets get out there and give it some wellie to show you how good it is' So.. the comparisom was between two totally different drives and I suppose all I learnt really was.... don't but a demo car the young lad has been showing off.
  5. I drove the 1.2 and thought it was good, then I tried the 1.4 today and that extra 200cc is so noticeable. I am still struggling to understand why they priced this one as such, even the salesman said they knew it would go within a day due to the price. I was once told that the main dealers can be penalised if they don't meet the monthly targets, perhaps it's cheaper to take a couple of grand loss than let that happen. Which if true means it would be great to know when their target deadline was due each month, means a much improved chance of haggling them down.
  6. Went to view and there it was GONE. Apparently it was an ex demo in mint condition and the low price was due to their quota requiring the disposal of one Yeti to allow delivery of another, it's all to do with this modern units against stock held target rubbish. Whilst there I did have a drive of an Octavia with the 1.4 engine, simply to see what I thought of the engines power and it was very impressive. Then had the usual why not buy new, we have one of these, there is a so and so coming etc, my reply was give me a ring next time you have to clear one from stock.
  7. Thanks for taking the time to write that, in all honesty I expected varied views on which is best...I suppose it will differ a lot with the individual, how they drive and how they view driving. I think the DSG is well liked by those that have it, I also think very valid points are made by those that don't and prefer a stick. The replys have certainly cleared up my original question ..with thanks to all. I suspect I have reached the view that I would accept either, though the difference in price and the fact I am more than happy doing the work myself and always have been, probably means I will end up with a manual and choosing the 1.4 for that little extra get up and go. My low annual mileage and no off road use tends to also remove the diesel versions from the equation.
  8. 3 miles away so I think It's worth a run out tomorrow..and you are right, not a daft price at all that..Thanks
  9. I knew this was the right forum to join for technical help
  10. and where do I put the half dozen mini wearing young ladys I am bound to attract with the new Yeti if the boot is zimmer full,?
  11. The test drive was the 1.2 TSI manual change, I loaded my better half and 2 friends in the back plus the salesman and myself in the front (obviously) making a total of 5 adults which I thought would have proved the 1.2 was not capable of such a load. No such thing happened and it nipped away up the road feeling quite lively, the only bit that concerned me was when we were toodling along at 40mph behind a wagon, I dropped back and then and I floored it..not much happened which I suspect was me hitting the power in too high a gear and not sufficient revs on...bit difficult to flog a demo car with 200 miles on it and a nervous salesman breathing down my neck. The salesman is actually a real nice down to earth guy, after I explained I would walk away if he started any bull**** sales patter, he seemed to loose his gloss and talk normal, he knows I am serious about buying in Jan so I think I will tell him I want some serious road testing and not a Sunday afternoon run out.... need to try the 1.4 though and they are harder to find.
  12. Hmmmm some very interesting replies and thanks to all for your input, I am now without a doubt decided, eerrrrrrrr no I'm not  I think I will have to go and stalk my local dealer some more. I never knew choosing a model would be so difficult, this is probably my last car before I buy one with space for a zimmer frame so want to get it right.
  13. My many hours of research before becoming a Yeti owner is slowly suggesting my milage should aim me at the 1.2 or 1.4 petrol, which is fair enough and probably about right... BUT There seems to be a lot of raving about the DSG system which I don't fully understand so a few bits of advice would be great. I am from the 'old school' where auto gearboxes used to break and cost a fortune to repair, they were jumpy and you changed the brake linings every 48 hours because there was no engine breaking and you burnt brakes out constantly. My last auto was a Ford Corsair when I was a teen, the box broke and I drove 15 miles home at 2am in reverse, stopping and pretending I was parked every time I saw some lights approaching, I was left with a neck that was sore for a month and mental panic issues that would qualify me for a looney institution whenever anyone mentioned an auto car. My short read up suggests the DSG is a 'constant drive' type system ??? Am I right? Is it as good as what it appears to be? Why should I get it instead of a stick to wiggle about? and while we are at it..my test drive of the 1.2 with 3 non lightweight back seat passengers, the salesman was not happy but money talks...I tried putting my foot down and it was ok but hmmmmm..is this the turbo/supercharger did I not have it in the correct rev range? Well thats enough for now, not buying until the post Xmas slump, so there will be more but I don't want to sicken anyone kind enough to reply.
  14. The 1.2 which seems the most popular for some reason, still wondering why the 1.4 Yeti appears not as popular, my thinking is it would just give that little more responsive drive.
  15. I think with buying a new or nearly new car I would be a bit worried regarding mapping which takes the engine beyond it's design (maybe) and as you mention..affecting any warranty. I may check the scrappies for a nice Bugatti Veyron engine to drop in it..should help the acceleration a tad
  16. One vote for the diesel then.. your comment appreciated and thanks for the welcome
  17. First of all, have browsed here a couple of times and great forum. As my name suggests I am from the wilds of Cumbria, plenty of A and B roads and a few that could be classed as X Y and Z, although in honesty I will never go off road and if it snows the car stays in the garage, driving in snow is fun but I spend too much time dodging those that can't. So.. I intend to become a Yeti owner in the early new year and this is where your views will help. My low annual milage of around 5k suggests petrol, perhaps with a Yeti that milage will increase though, but still no more than 8K. I have driven a diesel and was very impressed, also a 1.2 petrol...impressed again but like others I have this nagging feeling of constant gear changes on the hilly roads we have. That leads me to consider the 1.4 but it appears to be the one model that gets very few comments and certainly seems to be the least popular unless I am wrong. Any info from 1.4 owners will help my struggling decision making. At the moment I am leaning towards the 2 litre diesel 2 WD, simply for that fantastic torque and accepting it needs a blast out once a week to keep the sooty bits clean
