  1. Headlight washers come on and stay on when i turn lights on main beam- fine on half beam. Couldn't see where I was going to begin with for all the spray on my window and now wash tank is empty. Any ideas, other than letting the motor burn out? Thanks.
  2. Here's hoping. The compost factory would be the cheaper option. Definitely not brake fluid, but thanks for all the advice.
  3. Thanks. Will look at this, along with a good clear out of the leaves. Any more offers...
  4. As above. The car is also parked on a slope overnight. Have only just noticed it. Water level in coolant bottle is not affected, so assume heater matrix isn't at fault. My last car was 28 years old so if it's anything newfangled like air con you may have to draw me a picture. Thanks guys.
  5. Thanks folks- as mentioned, I've just had a new starter so it's quite possible something has been dislodged and fallen into the selector. Here's hoping.
  6. Hi. My Octy went nicely into reverse and then decided it didn't want to try any of the other gears. Clutch depresses fine but it was a two-hander to get it out of gear. Could get the car into 2nd and above but not first. Have been told it might be the clutch cylinder sleeve and that it's a gearbox out job. Thing is I've just spent a couple of hundred on a new starter motor this week and I can't really stand a massive bill. I'm not very knowledgable so I'd appreciate any opinions on the problem and how much I might expect to pay for that kind of work... Cheers.
  7. no joy. also looked to see if I had this problem (http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/219448-my-car-eats-batteriesred-lead-so-hot-it-burns/). Fuses also fine.
  8. Being a bit thick, sorry. Do I test it by trying to start the engine or am i just looking for a spark?
  9. Will have to check all this tomorrow but... Fuse box looked fine. Could be bead earth- the thing has been a poor starter when warm, and I understand this is sometimes due to bad earth. Where is the earth- is it fairly obvious?
  10. As described- My battery warning light stays on, the car doesn't even try to start but I seem to have plenty of charge. I have tried jump starting. Again, the car didn't even try. Anyone?
  11. No amount of pressing the fob unlocks the others, I'm afraid. You can hear that the pump(?) is only trying to unlock the drivers door, which led me to believe the others had become disconnected, until I got in the car and tried the buttons on the driver's door, which worked it fine. Because of this audible lack of effort from the other doors when using the fob, I'm fairly convinced it's a setting that's been altered rather than a malfunction. I am, of course, guessing!
  12. My central locking only unlocks the driver's door on the fob. In all other respects it works fine. All doors lock with fob and the buttons on the drivers door work. Reading the manual it seems that this may have been reprogrammed by me pressing the fob too much or somthing. Anyone know if this is the case and if there is an easy fix? I've tried using the key manually, which works but doesn't reset it. Much appreciated.
  13. Just to confirm, booted it to the limit just now. Not a flicker. For those out there about to do this, the actuator does require a reasonable bit of pressure so don't be shy. I figured it was done when I could feel it hit a definite stopping point each time and it didn't seem to be changing in resistance anymore. A couple of hours with regular pumping stints is good advice. Had to move a fat air pipe to get my tiny arms down the back of the engine and did things by feel more than sight, but it worked! Thanks again and happy motoring.
  14. I've just done this and it seems to have done the trick. Despite lots of jokes from people about how clean my car was looking, it genuinely seems sprightlier and I cannot make it go into limp mode. Have just re-read the bit about going to full revs and admittedly I haven't red lined it, just to about 4.5 on a steep hill in 2nd, but it would do it at 3.5 usually. Will really give it some beans later and if it does limp I shall report back. As it stands, I have to add myself to the list of overwhelming testimonials that it works. Well done, nice fix, many thanks.
  15. Just done this, after a lot of deliberation. Worked a treat. Still stunned that it actually worked... Thanks.
  16. ok, cool. Thought I read a warning about this on the original thread. It seems to be inevitable then- just have to get the materials and I'm having a go. Will try and remember to add the results to your original for others to see- it really helped me to know that it worked for others.
  17. As predicted, the car was fine when starting up again today- more than likely we've got the correct problem. Had a look underneath and I fancy having a go with the oven cleaner. I worry a little bit about not getting the pipe in the right place- any disastrous consequences if I do, or will it just not work properly?
  18. ok thanks. will probably pluck up the courage to mr muscle it.
  19. I just gave it a read through. Although it isn't the trickiest of jobs, I'm not one for risking doing unnecessary damage and I'm a bit clumsy. Have you any views on the forte turbo cleaner- do you know anyone else who tried it? I'd rather spend fifteen quid (if it works) than risk making a big mess from inexperience.
  20. really appreciate that- will try it out tomorrow. thanks. :-)
  21. Hi- I'm a new owner of a diesel- its an octavia mk1 1.9tdi elegance estate. Accelerating on the motorway out of a 50mph controlled area and the car suddenly went sluggish- couldn't get it above 70. It drove home fine but it feels more like driving a van. Any advice what to look for? Thanks.
  22. Thanks man- I'm hoping that's all it is as the car is seemingly a little gem. Far better to think I'm being a bit dim.
  23. Dunno- thought it was a triangle but I'm beginning to doubt myself after a good scout round on google. Definitely red with an exclamation mark, but perhaps not a triangle. In my defence, I had a five year old with me, making it difficult to pay attention. Might be worth going back to see if the handbrake was a bit on after I've put him to bed...
