Air con failed recently. Got main dealer to diagnose it during major service. The compressor has failed and they quoted ca £900 to replace. (TDI 1.6 estate 2010 Can anyone recommend and independent who could do a good job but cheaper? Preferably in Norfolk

Had this fault recently; 1.6 TDI local independent charged £280 for the part plus 4 hours labour. (The fitter said he had a real struggle with the job and it actually took more than 4 hours. He said he didn't want to do another one! -his boss told him that now he had done one next time should be easy, - he wasn't happy!)

These show up in headlights of approaching vehicles or driving towards low sun. I think they were caused by a gritter coming fron the opposite direction so I had no chance to keep clear. I suppose the only solution is a new windscreen? (I wonder if windscreens should be thought of as a wear item to be replaced after a high mileage; when I changed from my old Passat, which had 180k on the clock, to my mother's old car, which was hardly used, the improvement in visibility for night driving was dramatic.)
