Changing Glow Plugs

Featured Replies

Finally had enough of big clouds of smoke when my car finally started in the morning so I thought I would change the glow plugs.

Looked in the old haynes manual which had this down as a 3 spanner job.

So I removed the engine cover, disconnected the battery, pulled the wiring off, unscrewed old glow plugs, screwed in new ones, replaced wires and connected battery. Really hard!

Mind you I did drop the 10mm socket into the engine bay and spent 10 mins trying to retrieve it and swearing. It was sitting on the tray in the bottom and I could have done with an extra joint or two in my arm but I got it in the end.

Also you do need a deep 10mm socket and one glow plug is partially obstructed.

I didn't bother putting the engine cover back on as it doesn't seem to serve any real purpose, this isn't a problem is it?

I also noticed a bit of oil around a short pipe with comes from the top of the engine into the air intake just before the turbo. The oil was around the connection into the air intake, I assume this is a breather pipe and it recycles the air to avoid spitting oil out. It didn't seem to be seated quite right so I took it off cleaned it and put it back.

Leaving the engine cover off is not really a prob its just a cosmetic thing but does stop the dirt and dust covering the exposed engine.
