Alpine M500 Setup

Featured Replies

Right had the above amp for a good few years now. After installing my SPL dyanmics front component I thought I re-setup the above for my SPL Dyanmics 12D4 sub.

So cranked up the hu to volume 35 (starts clipping at 36) and then started increasing the gain on the amp until the "over protect" indicater came on and then lowered it down one. Now with the gain now set against the input voltage I thought I'd see what happens if I turn the EQ setting on (bass boost). Now I was expecting the "over protect" indicator to come on straight away as it would simply start clipping the signal but it never. Even when I set it to max (12db) their was no indication the signal was clipping (just fooking bassy )

Anyone got any experience with this amp or range of amps?

Hi John,

I've got the M1000 with the same remote amp controller as you and the amount of features on there are just too many! Not sure if I've got any equalisers even turned on in the amp, just using the Media Expander on the headunit.

I do remember using a voltmeter a long time ago and a 30Hz constant test tone to see when the amp was clipping but I haven't done that with my newer sub.

Btw have you upgraded the 'big 3'? I still need to do mine as the amp shuts down when turned too high :(

Hi Irf.

Couldn't remember if you had the M1000.

Not done the Big 3 but tempted. The amount of dimming of the lights is stupid with it crancked up :)

I found with the EQ turned off its not that bassy well not as much as I expect anyway.

I use to have an oscilloscope but it broke. With a voltmeter do you detect clipping by when the voltage stops going up?

I've lost my rattle cd. It was great had loads of test tones.

With the voltmeter you put it across the speaker outputs and as the gain increases the voltage increases very slightly. But when there's clipping, the voltage goes right down very suddenly. Thats from what i can remember anyway.

You can download test tones if you look around. 33Hz is an interesting one!

If you do the big 3 let me now as I want to do it asap!

;)

Think I'll try and download some. Be easier for listerning for clipping. Think I used 1Khzs a while ago to found out when the HU clipped.

Right found this site. Audio test CD - Arve Bersvendsen

You can download a test CD which has been recorded at 0dB. Will make it easier for me to detect clipping through the sub.
