Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the "Dryer" (offical part name) is in the aircon system , and how can you tell when it needs replacing?

Its the cylinder (about 6" long) thats mounted on the driver side chassis leg just behind the fans.

The dryer needs replacing anytime the a/c system is opened to atmostphere. It removes moisture from the a/c circuit.

Thanks - Any tips on where to get a new one at less than the £79 + vat that skoda want?
