Updated map for Sat Nav

Featured Replies

I have a Superb Elegance with sat Nav. I currently run the 2007/8 map with (TMC) Dynamic traffic system. The new updated map from Tele Atlas says it uses ITIS for Dynamic Traffic - is this the same and will my Sat Nav work as it does now with Classic FM putting out the ITIS signal. Anyone know?

Regards

John:)

ITIS isn't something I'm familiar with.

At a guess I'd guess it's a standard for another country - the system we use in the UK is TMC - so I'd guess it's not compatible with your TMC hardware.

Perhaps one of the more tech-savvy can confirm?

EDIT: Er... perhaps it's International Traffic Information System?

ANOTHER EDIT: Well, it's either something to do with taxidermy or it's this...

Thanks Bluefox - the map is for UK and Ireland only and it looks the same box as my original map 2007/8, but it does say ITIS and not TMC? Have sent an email to Tele Atlas asking them. Will post reply as soon as I receive it for any other ptewntial buyers.

Just found an English version of ITIS with search engine. There it says "ITIS supports sixteen car manufactures and all of the aftermarket vendors with a national RDS-TMC service and has over 600,000 drivers using the service." It may be the same system? I hope so anyway. Will wait for Tele Atlas to answer. See link below for more info.

Hmm...

I'll be interested to hear what they say, keep us informed

Where is the best/cheapest place to get a new UK Sat Nav disk from. I'm still running 2004, and roads have changed a wee bit near me!

Just looked on Ebay. Only one there is the 2008 version not 2008/9 so it's looks out of date.

Could you tell us where you got it from? And are there any other benefits to upgrading from the 2007/2008 disk eg. better postcodes?

OK that sounds mighty encouraging. But before I slap my £113.99 down on the counter, could you just confirm that if I turn the knob enough it will find IP24 2TX (not IP24 2), and that it has Woodruff Road, Thetford, in it's database? Please!

Um, that's slightly misleading... a sat nav's post code search will never, ever be 100%...

Simply because the post code system isn't 100% accurate!

It's not just that that's misleading. The street I asked about (Woodruff Road in Thetford) has been adopted bythe council for at least 7 years and it appears on the 2005/2006 map as a road, but it's not on the lookups so unless you've been there, you can't go there. So they don't have 100% street coverage either.

And the lack of a proper postcode search is pathetic considering Teleatlas do a full 7-digit lookup for the Tomtom platform, and the lookup is actually no harder than the street address.

I may have to make a complaint to the ASA if it's not there.

Tried it out this morning.

Can search to IP242T but no X.

Woodruff Road IS listed in Thetford.

Seems it is no different to your map in this particular instance??

I can only say that on the quite rare occasions I have to use the Sat Nav I have always been very impressed and have found my destination easily. I would rather have it than not - but you have a point with the 7 digit post code search as this will only give 6.

OK - The fact that Woodruff Road is listed is good news, the short postcode lookup is still just inexcusable.

I would agree that it's better than a map, but considering that you can buy a complete Tomtom with a map for the price of just the update disc, we're paying a great deal for the ease of not having to pull a suction-cup off the widscreen every time we leave the car.

In the countryside you can be literally a mile aweay from your destination with the 6-digit lookup on the postcode whereas the 7th digit gets you within 300m I believe.

Good. It looks like I'm ordering one of these then. Thanks again.

Complaining to the ASA about an eBay auction? Or have I turned over two pages at once somewhere? :o

No - The Teleatlas website says 100% coverage, but it's not.

Is this not down to a limitation of the MFD rather than the disc?

No. It's a limitation of the mapping, I've never come across a sat nav with 100% coverage of anything.

As I mentioned previously, the post code system's no where near 100% either.

I find this especially annoying. When ever i use my wife's Superb Elegance to an unfamiliar destination I stick my Garmin on the windscreen.
