so be gentle :D.

I just bought an Octavia vRS (sep '01) and can't wait until I can collect it from the dealer oncoming Saturday.

I asked the dealer about the coil-packs (because I read about them on here before I went to the dealer, thanks for having such a good forum!) and he claimed they were changed on the car I bought. As I only trust dealers as far as I can throw them, I'd like to verify this myself, but I havent got a clue as to where and how they look like. I don't suppose someone has some pictures of the location and appearance of these?

And are there any other things I need to have a closer look at under the bonnet?

Thanks,

Q.

Hello Good Evening & Welcome !,

The best thing to do regarding info on Coil Packs is to use the "Search Forums" button at the top of the site. There has been so much discussion in the forums that you will get lots of threads to read. Give yourself an hour & you too will be an expert !!

Seriously there is good info in there along with Photos of how to identify which packs you have.

Good luck with the vRS - Enjoyment is a standard feature !!

Welcome to Briskoda! :D

Select Search Main Site at the top of the page, click on FAQ on the LHS and then look for VVT or not VVT? which is answered under Skoda Technical. The tops of 3 of the 4 coil packs can be seen to the rear of the oil filler cap. (They are grey). The latest coil packs are the J version, ie PN 06B 905 115J. To get at them on your car, remove the plastic cover on top of the engine by turning the 4 captive recessed fixings a quarter turn anticlockwise (I think) using a very large bladed screwdriver. The coil pack wiring connectors on Nos 1, 2 and 3 cylinders can then be removed by pulling up gently on the plastic locking 'clip' and wiggling the connectors free. To get at the No 4 coil pack you will need a 10mm socket and a 5mm Allen key to remove the thingummy covering it. Good luck!

Time to check what versions the dogs are........dog.gifdog.gif

Thanks all for the welcome and gentle pointers. I've finally found out what they are and what they look like. Here's hoping they are indeed replaced with the J version.

Is there any risk involved when removing the connectors (i.e. electrocuting myself), or do I just have to make sure the engine is not running?

Q.

Well i aksed the dealer about the vRS coilpacks when i ordered it and he admited there have been faults but most of the dodgy ones apparantly are replaced???

I had a dodgy (ie knackered) one replaced at my dealer....with another H suffix (ie not the latest one) coilpack from a sales car...I must go in and see whether they can get J coils yet , im gonna change the 4 especially if they are only 20 quid each now!

PS Welcome to Briskoda Quinten!

I've just received a call from the dealer about my alloys and it doesnt sound good.

The car I bought has gold coloured alloys (identical to the normal vRS ones) and it just looks tacky, so the dealer agreed to replace them with the normal silver coloured ones (which they have written down in the contract I have with them).

As he had an identical black vRS on the forecourt, I thought (and he probably did as well) he referred to swapping the wheels around with the other one. But now he phones me up saying that they can not replace the wheels for another 2 weeks as "they need to strip them and repaint them".... Repaint?

Does anyone know if this is standard practise, and if it harms the alloys in any way? In other words, should I persist with the dealer to have them replaced rather than repainted?

Yours confused,

Q.

It sounds to me like it would have been less hassle for the dealer to just stick some new alloys on the car... What's going to happen with the black vRS left at the garage. Chances are the person who shows an interest in that car is also going to want silver alloys, I know I would! What's he going to swap them with? I reckon the dealer would have less hassle by buying new ones (especially if it causes you hassle) I imagine a 2 week delay is not going to put the dealer in your good books for any future needs for the car...?

As long as they are repainted properly then you should have no problems but i would want a discount for this.

By Re-painting, check what they mean as I would personally ensure that they mean "Powder Coating", as this has a far higher durability than a standard spray coating.

Was the previous owner involved in a lame attempt to create a WRX lookalike?

Really...

Trust me, it looks really tacky and cheap. And hence the request to the dealer to restore the alloys to their original colour.

But I still have to drive around it for 2 weeks  :censored: ! What will the neighbours think... ;)

Hi Quinten,

Have you bought the car from Merrits by any chance? Had my car serviced there the other day and noticed a black vRS with gold alloys on their forecourt.

:drive:

Yup, thats the one. I liked the other black one they had, but fancied the price more on this one (slightly higher milage than the other).

It was either this one, or a silver all the way up in Nottingham at a grand less, but as I got a good price for my part-exchange I spared my family of the long trek north and bought it :D
