Strange one this, recently purchased Fab 1.4 auto,it decided to cut out when ticking over twice which i dismissed as one of those things untill it cut out some days later at approx 45 mph, i put it into neutral and coasted to a safe spot but before it stopped it restarted up on its own !and i carried on no more probs, also the steering makes strange sounds at parking speeds is this normal? i heard that strangely the electric steering pump can throw up weird electrical faults to other systems on the car, could this be why it cut out? :confused:

Not sure on the fault but I would see if you can get it to a garage and get the diagnostics on it or perhaps someone near to you on the forum can plug vagcom into your car to bring up any faultcodes.

Sounds quite dangerous if it cuts out while driving!

My old 1.4MPI (8v, although I'm guessing yours will be a 16v?) did this once when I was waiting for my headgasket to be done...turns out it decided to inhale some coolant. It didn't like it
