Car won't start when cold

Featured Replies

Hi don't know whether anyone has experienced this before so though I would ask!

I have a 2002 Octavia VRS which has been chipped by Jabba Sport.

Sometimes (normally when particularly cold night) I will try start my car and nothing!

No attempt to turn over....sometimes I will be trying for a good 5 minutes just turning the key....or go back inside for a bit...come back out and it will start as normal

This is annoying especially when you are in a rush to get to work in the morning

Any ideas???

Temperature sensor on the blink maybe.

What fuel do you use SUL or UL ???

Mine doesn't like cold starts with normal unleaded.

It doesn't even engage the starter motor to try and turn over.like maybe the starter motor is sticking or dodgy imobiliser..could these be a temp sensor though?

Occassionally treat it to 99 ron a tescos or bp ultimate but generally normal 95 from bp

The solenoid in the starter can stick in, so I guess it could stick out too.

Worth looking at the starter for wiring issues and maybe even swapping it out for a recon unit.

Might be worth checking the leads onto the battery & if onto the starter motor., make sure all the connections are good. Unlikely but you never know

failing that Im convinced its the Ignition switch, we had the same on our Octy 1. Before you run screaming they arent very expensive to get repaired by the dealer, its not a complete switch, just the inerds so you keep the same key etc

I had this on my Felicia - probably the ignition switch.

I'd start by checking the battery leads, starter leads and engine earth. If there's a dodgy connection there, it sometimes makes better and allows the circuit to flow power when it's heated by trying to flow throught the high resistance.

After that, I'd think about the ignition switch (not the lock, the switch, which can in principle work without the lock attached).

Thanks everyone!!! I will put it on ramps tonight so if it doesnt work I can tap the starter motor and try see if it frees up...otherwise take it to the garage to have the ignition switch looked at

Thanks again
