Fuel pump and backinglighs always on

Featured Replies

I am having a problem with my Felicia 1,3 1998.

I was leaving my car today when I saw that the reversing lamps was on. When I was checking it out, I heard that the fuel pump was also pumping instantly even tough I was holding the key.

The only way to stop the fuel pump and the reversing lights, was to disconnecting the battery.

Is there anyone that has any clue what could be wrong here ?

i cant figure out how you would get the fuel pump relay running and the reversing lights at the same time, the only thing i can suggest is that the fuel pump relay has stuck on and is back feeding to the reversing lights from the ecu through terminal 15 on the ignition switch, but for that to work the car would have to be in reverse gear...

try a new fuel pump relay... £5 ish

Hi Teflon Tom and thank you for your suggestion.

It does not matter if I am in reverse gear or any other, the reverse lights is always on....and the fuel pump always running:mad:

I don´t understand this problem because it wont stop unless I disconnect the battery.

Do you know if relay for the fuel pump has negative trigger and the reverse lights as well ? If there is a circute shortcut could it possibly trigger these two elements?

Windscreen seal leaking and water getting into the fusebox, shorting out the relays. Been there, done that

yes, it could be a water leak as rigsby has said but that doesn't account for the reverse lights being on, it has to be in reverse gear because after the hot feed to the lights comes out of the fusebox it goes to a switch mounted on the base of the gearbox, there is no relay for the reverse lights.. unless of course the switch is stuck in the on position in which case they would be on all the time when you are driving too.

i'm not quite sure what you mean by negative trigger, but i can hazard a guess what you mean... the ecu earths the relay which activates it, the live side comes from the ignition switch via the fusebox

i agree,

take out the fuse one by one (placing them back) until you find your culprit, now if you take out the fuse that feed the backing lights is ofcourse going to come off, what you are looking for is some other fuse that makes the backing lights and the pump go of when you disconected, then you find what is shorted.

i spayed a hefty ammount of DW-40 on mine, to inoculate it from things like this

Hi Cepheuz and thank your for your detailed suggestions, I will try this tonight.

but dont pull this ecu fuse otherwise your throttle body will need to be reset, it's not to clever an idea to pull the air bag controller fuse either

Ive done a temp repair to mine to stop the water getting in, cut a few of the cable ties holding the cables, undone the hinged end of the fusebox and dragged it up the dash front and tied it up. It looks a f*****g mess but until i get time on a dry day, it will do

i didn't know that (since i drive a carbie) but if that is true, what happens when you unplug the battery (as he did) wouldn't that also be the same as taking out the fuse ?

when you disconnect the battery you would normally be disconnecting the negative terminal, when you pull a fuse and then replace it is allowing an inrush of current to the airbag controller, they sometimes get a bit confused and disable the passenger side airbag when you do this

Hi

I used the method Cepheuz suggested, pulled out one fuse at a time, until the fuel pump and reverse lights turned off. When I pulled out fuse no. 15, it stopped. This fuse is for Cigarette lighter, front internal light and clock. When this fues is disconnected, the cigarette lighter, front internal light and the clock does not work when the car is switched off.

When I switch to ignition and the fuel pump starts pumping for few seconds (witch is normal) the cigarette lighter, internal light, clock and reverse lights turned on while the pump was on. When the pump stopped, alla these items turned off.

When I turn the engine on, the internal light, cigarette lighter and clock works normal, but it should not do that because the fuse is unplugged. The revese lights are always on while the engine is running. (fuel pump is pumping)

It seems to me that the fuel pump is turning on all these items

I looked closely to the fusebox and all plugs, relays and connections looks like new. I can not find any water leaking, moist or any oxitation in the fusebox. I disconnected the cigarette lighter, and the internal light, but the pump starts always when I plug fuse 15.

This problem is a mistery for me.

Any clues?

I have now skrewed the fuse box down to small peases. There is no water, moise or oxitation in the box, everything in it looks like new.

I connected the fusebox back to the car, and the problem still occur.

I am getting realy confused.

Sounds like a short in the wiring somewhere, Trace the wires back from the fuel pump (under rear seats and carpet, You could find that they have got crushed or damaged

^^ ah yeah that could be it, the loom for the fuel pump and rear lights etc runs down he left hand side of the car

Hi all

You were right Rigsby and TeflonTom, the wires for the fuel pump and rear lights runs down the left hand side of the car. I opened it up, and pulled the wires that are under the drivers door. I couldn´t see anything wrong until I plugged the fuse in to the fuse box, then I saw smoke coming up from the loom and I found damaged wires by the frond end of the drivers door. The wires had started to melt together and one wire had started to oxitate alot.

I just cutted the damaged wires and added mored wires were needed.

Thank you all for your help
