140 tdi PD turbo failure?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have owned a 140 tdi L & K estate for a few weeks whicvh has done 116000 miles. I was on my way to the dealers to day to get the car checked out as there was a little smoke when you pulled away or after coasting. However the I was driving along and the power dipped and the car wouldnt go above 2500 revs or 70 mph.

The main dealer tells me the turbo has "gone" and needs replacing - cost = £1550.

There was no bang, no cloud of smoke, no warning lights. Does this sound right to you? If so any ideas on a replacement cheaper than the main dealer? They quoted 4 hours @£69 plus £1050 for the part - all excluding VAT.

Hello and welcome to Briskoda, shame it isn't under better circumstances :thumbdwn:

Personally I would like a more detailed explanation than 'gone'.

I wonder if the VNT vanes have jammed up causing an overboost or similar, either that or its seized up.

Either way, I would want more information.

Mine went the other week (2.0TDI) but it went proper bang and blew the compressor casing away. Under warranty at 80k as well.

EDIT

I've just read you have only had the car a few weeks, where did you buy it from and is there a warranty on the car?

Ex lease car - full skoda history but no warranty!!

Thanks for your help

No problem, shame I cant help any more. Seeing as you just bought the car there might be room for negotiation on the cost of the repair. Can't hurt to push in that direction.

Good luck with it either way.

You're lucky to have got 116k out of a tub. Some of ours are seeing turbos at 35-45k.

Whats to say it was the original turbo? :holmes:

Do you know what the fault code was?It might be the sticking vanes as suggested by dstev 2000. It sounds like it's gone to limp mode. When you switch off and restart does the car drive normally?

If the turbo is goosed an independent would probably be less expensive than a main dealer.

Thanks Simbo99. The annoying thing is the car is great and there were no signs of the problem when the car was purchased. My local (trusted) independent has quoted significantly less:)

Thanks Moley

Call to the dealer on the way!

Auction! Still should be agood buy though compared to other prices around:)

Auction = buyer beware, no rights unless it was manifestly mis-described.

I was quouted the same for a turbo on my 54 1.9Tdi, but I traded it for an 08 2.0Tdi.

If you can find a good independent it will cost you between half & 2 thirds of the dealer price.

sorted. independent came out at £900 including an oil & filter change.:-)

Managed to get mine done with a service for £850ish but mine is for a 1.9TDI.

Did get a little discount at that though, so would probably be close to £900.

A stealer wanted £1300 just for the turbo, i got rather worried and had it limped down to a local independant.

The new turbo was around £600 alone, so does the new turbo the stealers supply give them a £450+ profit?
