Idling Revs too high

Featured Replies

Hi all,

From time to time my VRS diesel will rev high when sitting in traffic. Usually is revs about 800-850 rpm. This increases to, sometimes just over 1000rpm. The only way to reset this is to turn the engine off & restart. When I move in the traffic & come to a stop again, the revs at up again.

Can someone please help me out with this.

Thanks,

Graham.

Perfectly normal its the engine management forcing an active DPF regeneration to burn the soot off and keep the filter clear. Just let it run and it will sort itself out when the regeneration is completed. It happens more often if you do stop start low speed urban driving rather than faster longer journeys on A roads.

DPF regeneration works better if you drive at around 2,000 rpm in 3rd or 4th gear (not always possible if you are in heavy traffic). I'm pretty sure it is described in your owner's manual somewhere.

It should stop after a few miles. If it doesn't or does the same thing regulary you need to do some distance at higher speed to aid regeneration of the DPF.

DSG owners will also find the car appears to go into S mode - during regeneration it will hold lower gears longer to get the revs up.
