Working my way through the usual Fabia issues - need some help?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I bought a 2002 fabia for my wife a couple of months back (2.0 elegance) and have been working my way through fixing all the usual fabia niggles. The Briskoda search facility has been invaluable

First I re-sealed the doors as they were leaking, then fixed the dash creak.

I also have a PAS issue but searching doesnt seem to bring up symptoms that exactly match.

I have once had a PAS warning light come on but didnt lose the steering. What i do have is best described as the PAS motor actuating (flickering/twitching) when the car is idle and stationary.

You can hear it wirring irratically from the front passenger corner, as it does this the engine idel bounces up and down a little due to the power drain. I've also found the car battery to go dead very fast with the ignition on but not the engine started.

Also, the amount of power assist seems to vary at random, sometimes you turn a corner and its normal, others its ultra light and i nearly crash :)

Anyone else found this issue?

I used to be an apprentice electrician and i suspect its a short in the wiring or the PAS steering angle sensor. Anyone know where you could get a short on the Fabia?

Cheers in advance!

Ron

I've had this, steering angle sensor. Replace and it should all be good

Thanks Alex, I also get really badly flickering lights at night even though it has a new-ish Bosch battery (last year 65amp).

Will get the battery and alternator tested and then also buy a steering angle sensor.

Good plan. Give the terminals a good clean and check the engine earth straps while you're there.

My only thoughts are ,has water got into either of the plug/socket connections ,causing a short?. Having recently changed my steering pump,I was surprised that the area where the pump is situated gets quite wet, from the road. When I removed all the noise cancelling foam around the old pump it was saturated with water . I know the plugs, and sockets are well sealed ,by I think any pump failure is corrosion between the steel top plate which holds the sockets ,and the pump body which is an alloy . Two different metals and water, cause corrosion, which eventually damages the Printed Circuit Board, and/or its components.

Hi, NIce to hear from someone with similar problems to me, recently bought an Elegance 1.4 16V for the Wife which had 13 diagnostic codes when I got it home. Lucky for you I already fixed the PAS issue and the same thing fixes the flickering lights; Steering angle sensor, cost me about £80 for the part and fitted it myself, here is a guide on her if you do a search, not the most fun of jobs but not too hard either. I also checked the pump connections for water ingress but mine were fine, I thought at first it may have been the pump (seen the price for them?) glad it wasn't.

Hope this helps.

Faskoda.

My mum has a 1.4mpi 51 plate and had the same PAS problem.

As Ninja alex said, replace the sensor and ti will be all good.

Fitted the steering angle sensor at the weekend, took me about a hour all in.

Problem solved, steering feels well balanced and the noises coming from the pump have stopped. Awesome help there guys!

Also re-sealed my door carriers.........just got the dash creak to go and then I'm happy

Good work - always nice when you get full resolution and the satisfaction you've sorted it yourself
