Cracks In Tyre

Featured Replies

Just noticed cracks on the outer edge of the inside front wheel, they are not deep cracks but is it ok to drive like this.

Ive got a bit of a gash:bigeyes: on one of my tyres outer sidewalls and every time ive been to a garage the fitters have said the tyre is ok

Probably best if you drive into a few tyre fitters and ask them to have a look

If they all say it needs replacing...fairy muff

Try two or three garages though in case the first one is a shyster

cracking is normally the rubber perishing..... how old are the tyres? manufacturers tend to say not to keep 'em longer than 3-4 years...

The car is a 2005 model ( I bought used when car was 2 half yrs old )and the two front tires are Dunlop SP 20 E, not sure if these are original. The 2 two back ones are Pirelli P6000,

NTDA used to say 10 years...now its 6 years old. If you look at the small print on the tyre they are date stamped "4006" for example which means the tyre was made in the 40th week of 2006, if only 3 digits are shown they were made in the nineties

Been to my local Nationwide Auto Garage where I have been a few times over the years and the man in charge said the tyre should be ok for quite a while.

They will more than likely be caused by stupid and utterly pointless speedhumps. I'd change it, why risk it blowing?

Dunlops - reason enough to change them if they're down to about 3mm IMO. They're notorious for minor stress cracking around the shoulders, bu it never seems to go down to the plies.
