Golf search for a friend

Featured Replies

Friend of mine's in the market for a new car. Outright purchase, budget is 5k firm.

Fancies a Golf, needs to be diesel, not fussed about anything else really. Doesn't need to fast, performance orientated or anything like that - just a reliable runner with adequate performance :)

I wondered whether 5k would stretch to an earlier Mk5 1.9 PD105? Perhaps that would only include high-milers though? Not really been paying much attention to the 2nd hand markets recently, so will need to go digging. Around 60k miles would be acceptable I feel. I've ruled out any SDI offerings because I don't feel that offers adequate performance - main use will be motorway miles.

Options/suggestions/potential candidates all welcome, or whether you think it's more advisable to find a later Mk4 that fits the bill - perhaps a GT TDi PD130....

Thanks,

Steve

Quick check on Autotrader and yes it looks like she'd be looking at high mileage cars. There are a few GT TDI 140 under £5k but they have a lot on the clock.

The 105 and 130s mostly have close to 100k on the clock.

What about a Seat Leon?

Thanks. She doesn't like the look of the Leon and I've suggested a Skoda or two, but apparently the badge is still an issue

If its gonna spend most of it's life on motorways then a mid-high miler might be ideal.

The engine should be nicely run in, provided its not had a hard life, the clutch and everythiong should be fine too.

Remember low milers don't guarantee a "perfect" car, it could have been clocked, developed a fault a something, thrashed or just a problematic car.

I look for a car I want, in budget, good condition and well maintained as milage isn't a problem for me. though

*edit* had a scour myself and the majority are 100k plus miles but they dont look in bad nick.

I always look at milaages like this - petrol cars approx average 10k a year and diesels approx 20k

Spotted an 04 plate 1.9TDI, 100k miles £4700 ono. which kind of matches my milage thingy.

here

Could be worth a look

Thanks for your efforts. Agree with the mileage thing and wouldn't be put off by 100k either.

I'd consider that Golf above, if it weren't for the 100k tagline, and then 136k mentioned in the advert text! Why not just be upfront?!

Cheers,

Steve

I didn't read the 136k miles bit when i first looked :o

Fair play; it's been deliberately concealed in a mass of advert text

Steve

But on my searches I will repost what everyone else has said.

The majority of £5k Golf 5 diesels are about 100k miles even the GT ones.

Good hunting, you might strike lucky!!! I did with my Favorit.

Have alook on Forums - uk-mkivs

I would much prefer a nice Mk4, of which there are plenty for sale than a tired Mk5 PD105 which were mainly bought for courtesy cars. £5k will buy you a really nice one with lots of toys.

Of course you will know what to look for on the PD's

Thanks, been keeping a look out on there too

Thanks everyone, now sorted with a Mk4 - 1.9 PD100 Match. Silver, 53 plate, 63k - £4500. That should do

Cheers,

Steve

Ooh nice!! Glad you found one!

  • Author

Yep, should do the trick - I hope! :D

Cheers,

Steve
