Please help very worried about noise!!

Featured Replies

Hello everybody hope you may be able to help me on this one

I have a VRS on an 04 and has done approx 83k, I travel a fair way to work every day and the car gets used hard

A few weeks ago I was on my way to work one morning and the engine sounded extremely noisy, I can only compare it to the noise your car makes in reverse kind of a whining whilst accelerating.

I was very worried and to be honest I feared the worst (gearbox etc) and as I work 16hr days plus travelling I left it for a couple of days until I could investigate on my days off, when I finally did I was very relieved to find the headlight back cover had unclipped and was rubbing on my alternator pulley! I clipped it back and I thought everything was ok

Trouble is the noise although better is still there and it is more of a grumble or excessive engine noise rather than a whine and only when the car is in gear and accelerating :(

Im so skint at the moment I really hope its not the gearbox! I thought it would be the earlier incident taking out the alternator bearing but surely that would be evident whilst accelerating out of gear:confused:

Please help

It sounds like its clutch/DMF related if its only doing it in gear ?

Does it make the noise in every gear ?

Hi thanks for your help:cool::thumbup:

I thought clutch due to the noise being consistent in every gear and basically from the moment the clutch is engaged until it is disengaged (although noise changes in frequency with the engine rpm)

Sorry for being dense but DMF:confused:

(edit...dual mass flywheel???)

Been having alook around and recon would be fine, sounds like it could be input shaft bearing possibly so can be repaired been quoted aprox 300 pound labour to swap and seen recon units for around 4-500

anyway thanks for you help so far

Update.....

Took car to garage (gbox specialists) and looks like the main pinion bearing is shot, they quoted 500-1000 to recon gearbox, 270 labour to remove and replace and a further 700 for clutch and flywheel.

Is it a certainty that the flywheel needs replacing?

Until you get the box out, there's nothing certain either way about the clutch and flywheel assembly. Best case they've got lots of life left. Worst case the clutch is shot or oil contaminated and the flywheel's over-heated.

Hi everyone

Gearbox replaced yesterday (found a s/h unit on ebay for £300) got it fitted for £200 and is very quiet now  clutch etc didnt need replacing so thats good

Bought some TT 17" alloys too so getting tyres fitted and having new wheels as a badger bent one of my originals so i fitted dezents all round which have lasted a year:thumbdwn: hopefully the TT wheels will be better quality

Great result for a very good price.
