Halogen bulbs

Featured Replies

Hi there,

The low beam bulb warning light has come on in my skoda octavia for the right hand side. I understand from reading the manual I need H7 halogen bulbs. I have seem the ones listed in the following link:

H7 Powerwhite Bulbs for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

Would these be OK to use (particularly the "super white" part), and is there anything I need to be aware of when putting them in myself (the manual makes it look pretty straight forward). Also, should I replace both at the same time?

Thanks

Mike.

Hi, I assume from the link you are in NZ so no idea what makes are available there. Would suggest you stick to a big brand bulb if available, Phillips do +50 and +90% bulbs and Osram offer similar. If not aavailable go for a local top brand as cheaper ones tend not to be aligned properly or of inconsistent quality and beam focus.

If you fit upgraded bulbs you should change both sides at the same time.

There are several threads on popping the headlanp units and changing the bulbs, first time takes about 15mins a side, once you know the procedure it only takes 7/8 mins each side. Only other thing is to make sure you do NOT touch the glass on the bulbs.

If I was wanting to improve lo beam I'd look at Osram H7 65W rallye/hyper or Philips X-treme H7 55W globes.

Avoid anything with a blue filter on the glass, as it reduces output.

I use surgical rubber gloves when changing Halogen bulbs to ensure that they're kept grease free, they're also cleaned with surgical spirit beforehand & allowed to dry before installation.

I just got some H4 Phillips Crystal vision bulbs for my octy 1, they have a blue filter but i must say i havnt noticed any reduced light output, and driving at night is improved as the eyes dont strain as much. I got them from Repco, did cost a wee bit but i also recomend to pay for a good brand bulb and you wont run into any issues

Turn off the electrical source for the halogen bulb. Allow the halogen bulb to cool. Touching a hot bulb can cause a serious burn. Enjoy the bright light given off by your halogen bulb.
