As title reads my gearbox in my 04 VRS has given up with only 44k on the clock!! So need some help with gettin it sorted.. Would you recommend a brand new gearbox and clutch or go for second hand gearbox and clutch??? also will any VAG 1.8T gearbox and clutch fit or will it have to be for vrs?? Next question is prices for these items and any help in sourcing these will be gratefully appreciated..

Double check it's not the diff rather than the gearbox.

There was gear oil pouring out and a whine from the engine when driving after it happened... also the clutch seems to be slipping maybe due to all the oil leaking?? I wonder does that help... Any symptoms if the diff is gone??

Usual Symptoms of a diff failure are lots OF NOISE, and/or a total failure to drive.

This sounds like the input shaft oil seal has gone, and if you're lucky you might get away with a new seal and clutch/flywheel.

Thanks again for reply.. only noise in fourth.. so hopefully not the diff! Will mention it to my mechanic see what he says.. would it be worth changing clutch first and see how it runs before the gearbox? What is the best way to diagnose the problem take the clutchand gearbox out for a look?

Well, i recently had a new gearbox and clutch.

Clutch was about £300 + fitting

Gearbox (recon) was like £900 + fitting (although i've heard that was expensive for a gearbox).

If the input shaft oil seal's gone, there's no point in changing the clutch until the seal's been replaced, which will probably require the box stripping or an exchange box.

just sourced a second hand gearbox for £200 from an audi 1.8T with 50K on it hopefully it'll do the job. Got new clutch for €270euro might get away with not making too much of a whole in the wallet!! Thanks for the comments as always

Does it come with the diff ? The only reason I ask is that I had a gearbox failure on a Mk1 A3 many many moons ago. And it not only knacked the gearbox, but also the diff. And a lot of recon boxes didn't come with diffs.

Maybe thats why mines was soo expensive, as mine had a recon diff as well.

Of course if the diff isn't included there is always the option of an LSD fit at the same time
