Damn ABS woes

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've been having "fun" with my ABS controller and the ABS light recently. I pulled up at a traffic light, and just after I'd come to a standstill, there was a clonk from the back, and then immediately after, the ABS and ASR lights came on, and a permanent error stating that there was a fault in the rear right circuit:

1 Fault Found:

00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Right (G44)

012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

It wouldn't clear so I bought a new sensor, no difference, swapped rear sensors around, no difference. When hooked up to vagcom I'm getting live readings off all 4 wheels without problem so the sensors are obviously fine. The garage I took the car to was getting dodgy readings off the front left sensor, but the car wasn't complaining about it. This led us to believe it was the ABS ECU. Sent it off to BBA-reman who tested it and reckon it's fine, the light is going out and they can't get it to do anything wrong. So what next? All fuses are fine, doesn't seem to be any dodgy connections or anything. At the moment I'm inclined to believe that BBA-reman didn't test it properly, or tested the wrong one, does anyone have any ideas before I run new wires for everything?

I'm inclined to suspect the wheel rotor unit. You've already checked the sensors, wiring and even the ECU, so that's kind of all that's left.

but that wouldn't throw up an electrical circuit error when the car is stationary and while I'm trying to clear the codes.

I'd suspect dodgy wiring or connections. have you done a wiggle test on all the wheel sensors and the control unit?

  • Author

yup, everything is solid, have unplugged and plugged all sensors and obviously the ABS unit (which is currently with UPS on it's way back to me)

How about with the engine running (or even spinning a wheel with the ignition on?) to see if you can get it to log a code? Mind, I don't whow what it will do with one wheel turning :)

how do you mean? It has a permanent code logged (the one above), no amount of clearing or wiggling helps, and seeing as the ABS system is a self clearing system, it *should* extinguish the light if the wiggling helps

I'd imagine if you have one wheel spinning but no other ones, you'll get all sorts of errors, I got that on my old volvo when I had the front end in the air and the engine running

I was just wondering if you could clear the code and get it to re-occur. Are you saying it won't clear?

If so, I'd measure the resistance of the sensor on it's own, and then re-measure from the controller connector pins and see if it's way different. Obviously it will be different, but shouldn't be much.

yeah, it won't clear at all. Don't suppose you've got the pinouts of the ABS ECU have you?

Control Module Part Number: 1C0 907 379 D

Component and/or Version: ASR FRONT MK60 0103

Software Coding: 0021505

if that helps?

Not here, but maybe at home *if* I can persuade my PC into life. Can anyone else help with that?

Have you driven the car much since replacing the wheel sensor?

I helped a fellow member replaced his rear offside sensor the other week and the ABS light didn't go out at first but he found after driving it a few times the system reset itself.

I've driven the car about 300 miles since the light first came on, and about 150 of them were since the new sensor has been put on. The code will self clear if there isn't a fault. It's not self clearing and I can't manually clear it :(

well, I think I might have found the problem, haven't confirmed it yet, but should hopefully get onto that tomorrow.

The entire loom for the rear right ABS sensor, up to where it joins the interior loom, was really brittle and corroded. I'm going to replace the wire with some new speaker cable tomorrow to see if that works, then splash out on a new piece of loom.

Well this isn't the problem then I'll be reet confused!

(that's the ABS sensor wire)

Is that down near the sensor end?

Crikey. Well found.

the entire length of that bit of the loom looks like that! It's all really brittle and high resistance!

A new section of wire should be here tomorrow from skoda, at a ridiculous price of £32

Well this isn't the problem then I'll be reet confused!

(that's the ABS sensor wire)

I'd buy that for a dollar (as being the fault).

well well well, that was indeed the fault, after shelling out £56 for the ABS pump test and £60 in garage labour, it turned out to be a bit of wire that I managed to replace with one off a Golf GTI that cost me £2 (The skoda order was a day late and I didn't want to wait so cancelled it)

Happy (ish) days
