Replacement key fob

Featured Replies

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere - a search doesn't come up with anything (broken?) and I'm dead from scrolling through threads - it's driving me up the wall.

I got only one fob when I picked up my car today (not from dealer) and want to get another sorted before I lose it. I'm going through a phase of losing keys and I'm paranoid about losing this one.

There are plenty 3-button ones on eBay but it looks like I need a 2 button one as mines an estate.

I'm going to keep plugging away at the search function to see if I can find relevant answers to the questions:

  • Can I use a 3-button fob on my estate and, if so, will the boot open with it?
  • If I buy second hand:
    • Is there anything particular I need to watch for, eg:
      • Are they all reprogrammable whatever they have been programmed to before or must they have been blank chips?
      • Are they all the same frequency?

[*]Are all same-age VW/Seat/Audi 2-button fobs the same except for the logo?

[*]I'll be going to local locksmiths to see if they have the blank keys and/or coding facility to save a trip to the dealers.

[*]If I buy new (I'll check out dealer prices when I get chance) can I just order by car reg or must I get the programmed separately (I've had too many mistakes from dealers to take their info without checking first)?

If anyone can give me a steer to threads or provide info I'd be grateful.

Cheers,

Ian

dealer price for the transponder is £41.30 + vat, the blade part is seperate and is £49.21 + vat, the blade will be ordered cut to your car but the transponder will still need to be coded, not sure if a locksmiths can cut them as they are laser cut

Well over £100 if go to dealer then, possibly over £150 all in - I can't get my local(ish) dealer to answer the phone and I've had to resort to an email, so your help is great.

Have just got a few numbers of likely auto key cutters, some of whom claim to do programming, so I might be lucky on the DIY route even if using 3 different suppliers for fob, key cutting & programming.

Search facility still not working for me........grrr

Think its about £120 from a dealer all in, not 100% sure though.

presume it'll be an hours labour to code it in, just depends what their 'hourly' charge is!
